“Mixed feelings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Queen's Hotel really has potential but does not live up to expectations. With some changes this could be a great hotel and charge more. I have to say, though, that the room was very inexpensive, so great things cannot be expected.

Pros

Great location, right next door to Sacred Tooth Temple.

Historical building

Attractive lobby

Large rooms

Cons

Rooms are very plain. With some minor decorations (local handicraft etc) the rooms could be really nice.

Room was very noisy (traffic from street and windows were very poor for isolating noise)
Windows not tight and as a result, mosquitoes in the room (bathroom window seems to have an opening letting insects in)

Only one towel per person in the bathroom (no hand towel)

Bathroom got all wet when I took a shower.

Not one blanket in the room (and 1st request did not result in blankets)

Dinner buffet (included in the room) - the local dish tasted very good but the meat was very hard on both evenings - should have been cooked much longer as the piece of meat was not tender.

Elevator broken for the most part of our stay.

Considering the low price of the room I don't have too many regrets expect that it is a great pity they keep things as they are in this magnificient building.

We came by train from Colombo. Inexpensive taxi drive from the station to the hotel. For our onward journey we walked towards the train station and foud a taxi station a few blocks before a station with many cars. Got a very good car and driver for a reasonable price.

“Queen's Hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

The Queen's Hotel in Kandy once was the residence of the British Governor, situated right opposite of the Temple of the Tooth (the former Palace of the King of Sri Lanka).

It is in walking distance to the lake and the Temple of the Tooth.

I stayed 1 night at the hotel sharing a room with a friend.
We had done an online reservation but on arrival, our "special requests" like 2 beds for example had not been received. After a lengthy discussion with the reception staff, we were shown 3 rooms - they were either extremely small or facing the noisy street.

At one point we gave up and in and just accepted a room on the first floor as we were extremely tired of sitting in a car all day traveling in the heat.

The hotel is old and not very well looked after, the single beds are small and so was this tiny bathroom. The attitude of the staff was not very welcoming nor customer-oriented. WiFi is only available in the noisy reception area and not in the rooms.

All in all I would have a cup of tea at the hotel just for seeing it from the inside but would not recommend to stay there.

“Old, but Good!”

Queen's Hotel
You can't beat the location. Across the street on one side is the lake and on the other side is the Tooth relic Temple. How convenient is that? If you want to be away from things, then, this is not the hotel for you. This is central. It has that old colonial charm...meaning antique pipes so we had no hot water for a couple of days. But the decor and atmosphere and the staff were wonderful. Like a time warp. Another big plus is the free wifi in the lobby. But there is a Cyber cafe a few doors down if you need a computer. The room itself was huge, with tiled bathroom and antique bathtub. Not to worry, the toiled flushed just fine. Everything was tidy and clean...just really old. The breakfast was a huge buffet of both western and SL dishes. Plenty of fruits and beverages. Be adventurous and try the string noodles with coconut topping. Yum! Also, I've never tasted bananas as good as those in SL. Having read some of the negative reviews, the 4 nights at Queen's turned out to be a lot better than I had expected. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake. If you're just above the lobby, you can get wifi without...

“Step back in time...”

...into a little bit of Kandy's colonial past.... Worryingly it appears a lot of the rooms and decor may not have been touched since the British hung up their white linen suits and left...

Reminiscent of a set from one of Agatha Christie's more exotic Miss Marple adventures, the Queen's Hotel has a certain loveable charm but isn't up to the standards of many of the other lakeside hotels in the city.

Reasonable value for money but you would be well advised to find somewhere to eat out (like Pizza Hut across the road) as the service leaves a little to the imagination.

Small but relatively comfortable rooms, an OK looking pool. But be prepared to hear every going on in your corridor - and above - and below until every one has gone to sleep for the night.

The travel office and tours guy in reception is helpful but expect to play a third more than the drivers and guides outside for little extra in the way of service.

Having been quite excited about the Queen's Hotel and Kandy in general we were left feeling a little under-awed.
