Queen's Hotel really has potential but does not live up to expectations. With some changes this could be a great hotel and charge more. I have to say, though, that the room was very inexpensive, so great things cannot be expected.
Pros
Great location, right next door to Sacred Tooth Temple.
Historical building
Attractive lobby
Large rooms
Cons
Rooms are very plain. With some minor decorations (local handicraft etc) the rooms could be really nice.
Room was very noisy (traffic from street and windows were very poor for isolating noise)
Windows not tight and as a result, mosquitoes in the room (bathroom window seems to have an opening letting insects in)
Only one towel per person in the bathroom (no hand towel)
Bathroom got all wet when I took a shower.
Not one blanket in the room (and 1st request did not result in blankets)
Dinner buffet (included in the room) - the local dish tasted very good but the meat was very hard on both evenings - should have been cooked much longer as the piece of meat was not tender.
Elevator broken for the most part of our stay.
Considering the low price of the room I don't have too many regrets expect that it is a great pity they keep things as they are in this magnificient building.
We came by train from Colombo. Inexpensive taxi drive from the station to the hotel. For our onward journey we walked towards the train station and foud a taxi station a few blocks before a station with many cars. Got a very good car and driver for a reasonable price.
