The Baba House is a historical Hotel with Baba & Nyonya characters. We stayed in the deluxe room (New wings) at The Baba House for Chinese New year eve. The price is reasonable. The room and the toilet are clean. Dont expect full range of TV channels in the room, only local channels. The staff is helpful but we think they need to be happy with their job, it will be nice to see them smiling. The hotel has good massage place with reasonable price. The breakfast is very basic and we think they need to improve their breakfast standard.
The location is perfect for tourist as it is in the heart of chinatown. A minutes walk to Jonker Street where lots of shops, bar and restaurants and also the weekend night market. Cross over the bridge, you can visit the historical places and try the river cruise. Do try the local cuisine especially Baba Nyonya cooking.
If you need a basic clean hotel, we recommend you The Baba House. Overall, we did enjoyed our stay.
Receptionist is friendly and helpful.
The price is quite expensive compared to the Hotel Puri and da som inn with modest service.
Normal breakfast. In a restaurant next to the hotel .. Do not have high expectations.
The scene in the hotel is quite beautiful.
Hotel parking is always full
Set just off Jonker street, hotel is great if you wish to experience the historical side of Malacca. Rooms are small but clean with god air conditioning. Staff are very helpful and accomodating to requests. Free WiFi is available. Furniture Are period pieces. Baba house is located to numerous food outlets. Try Baboons Restaurant just down the road towards the river, it is absolutely awesome. Food is all homemade and the Pork Teriyaki burger is out of this world.
Well recommended.
Location, ambience, comfort. These are the key features of this hotel.
It is located ideally, parallel to Jonker Street the hub of the tourist experience of local shops and eating places. Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm to 10pm Jonker Street comes alive with street stalls and local Karaoke on the community stage. Baba House is close enough to get to this to join in, but just far enough away that it's not on the doorstep of your lodging. A small connecting street also has good food. A 10 minute walk takes you over the river to the cultural and historic hub surrounding Dutch Square. Not much further walking along the riverside brings you to maritime museums and the jetty for the river cruise (try both the daytime and dusk trips).
The hotel itself is a remodeled Peranakan house (traditional elements from the early days when Chinese traders married local Malay women). It has internal courtyards and many lovely items of furniture. The nearby Baba Nonya museum explains the Peranakan tradition well, but unfortunately forbids photography.
I paid a little extra to secure a room with a window (Asian hotels often have windowless rooms). The room was adequate in size, with simple tasteful furnishing and decor. The free Wifi internet unfortunately did not work in my room. I had to use the lounge in the lobby for that.
I was more than happy with my stay and the cost was very reasonable. There were many interesting and inexpensive eating places nearby (although less so after 7.30pm).
