I live and work in Shanghai. Having only arrived in August of lastyear, I decided to do a staycation over Chinese New Year, instead of hitting somewhere hot. I wanted to relax and forget that I was in shanghai for a few days.
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay, in fact, I tried to extend my stay for an extra night, but they wouldn't give me the same rate, so since the hotel was empty, on principle, I decided not to stay.
I would suggest the hotel, but not the spa. I had a facial, which was very relaxing, however, it caused me to break out in a rash the following day. I have sensitive skin, so I asked for the sensitive facial.
The hot tub in the ladies' relaxation area was dirty and the cool mist shower wasn't working. The pool is beautiful, but very small. A family with small kids took over the pool area at one point, which was a bit annoying as they were splashing around a lot, which is what kids do, but I wanted to relax.
Having a bath in the room was a really enjoyable experience, as the night view is really amazing, and extra fun while in a tub!
Only 2 years old, the Puli is a very modern hotel with traditional Chinese design elements incorporated. The grand rooms are super-comfortable with a large bathtub beside the window with padded headrest. Creative room layout that is a welcome change from the standard bathroom and bedroom boxes, more open plan style. Nespresso machine in room and great apples refreshed daily in room.
Wifi was free, also free use of the business centre for printing.
Service was very good and English levels very very good for Chinese hotels. I was impressed. Location is great for business.
Loved the hotel - room beautiful. Great open feel to the room - I was upgraded to a corner room. Fluffy duvet and really soft pillows - great black out blinds and amazingly quiet given proximity to the road. This helped me to sleep despite serious jet lag. Large double ended bath, separate shower, really good design with seating areas too in the living bedroom area.
Good (free) high speed wifi and plenty of TV channels and complimentary mini bar (which included beer).
The lobby area and long bar were also very attractive. Service was good apart from my food experience.
As I was on my own and tired after a day at work and a long haul flight I preferred to eat at the hotel. The options are very limited. There is one restaurant with no Asian or Chinese food whatsoever. I really didn't fancy the European food and went out but didn't see anything nearby that I fancied. So I went to the Long Bar and ordered a toasted cheese and ham sandwich (the menu was very unexciting!). This arrived after around 45 minutes - it came with fries and both the sandwich and the fries were cold. I then waited another 15 to 20 minutes for a replacement - which was warm - but pretty unappetising. Doorstep slices of white bread with ham and cheese and crisp but fatty tasting fries. With two glasses of wine (which I had to have to fill the waiting time) this came to a staggering £40! I really wish I had had burger king - it would have been quicker and probably tastier.
Everything else was great - but I think the hotel needs to deal with its food offering - surely in China it must be possible to offer something vaguely Chinese other than pot stickers on room service which hardly constitute a meal.
I have stayed in a number of hotels in Shanghai over the past two years, including the Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Peninsula and the Ritz Carlton - the Puli comes a close second to the Park Hyatt on style - but it is let down by its limited food offering.
This hotel is outstanding. Beautifully designed rooms, comfy beds, awesome bath overlooking smoggy Shanghai and even a Nespresso maker to get a quick boost before another big day in this amazing, chaotic, fast-paced city. The Puli has a boutique feel, despite having 229 rooms. Staff were wonderful - I'm definitely not a newly minted, high-roller Chinese, but still treated with respect and not a hint of arrogance that I find in many of the hip/trendy hotels these days. Another great example of 5-star Asian hospitality that makes "luxury" hotels in other regions of the world pale in comparison! Love it! An excellent choice when in Shanghai whether for business or romantic weekend away. Will return.
