We stayed for 5 nights in January 2012, taking advantage of their Heritage 1934 package that offers a junior suite, one way airport transfer, wi fi, breakfast, two back massages, and 500 food and beverage credit for 1934 first night, then 1200 rmb subsequent nights. I mention this as its fantastic value for shanghai. Our room was huge and beautifully maintained. Before making the booking we asked if they had a twin bedded suite and they confirmed they didn't but offered to prepare one for us, which was great service. Our room on fifth floor had great views from its three balconys, and was surprisingly quiet despite the surrounding traffic. Comfortable beds, excellent bathroom with a huge deep tub, two sinks and massive shower made for a luxurious stay. Penhaligon toiletries were wonderful too- very expensive British brand which as a Brit I appreciate! I'm sure a room of equivalent size and style overlooking the bund would be twice as much, so five stars for value. Location is excellent too, with people's square station and it's three metro lines just across road from hotel, 15 mins walk to bund, 2 stops on subway to pudong, nanjing shopping road a block away, all the renmin park attractions round the corner. Raffles mall across the road also has a wide range of good eating options if you want to eat on your doorstep affordably.
The service we received was a bit more hit and miss and not quite up to the standards that such a fine building deserves. Various offers made in the hotels newsletter and publicity weren't quite realised- e.g. We requested an art deco tour and booklet of hotel as stated in our room package and they didn't know about it, and just gave us a standard hotel brochure, and a couple of special food packages such as chocolate afternoon tea wasn't available. Breakfast was acceptable but no more, but to be fair we had been spoilt by excellent breakfasts from much bigger hotels earlier in our tour of china. But these are small details, and overall we had a great stay enjoying the lavish design and restoration of this fine hotel. If I could secure such an excellent room rate again, wouldn't hesitate to stay here when nextin shanghai. Ps. They do buy one glass of wine get one free from 5.30 to 7.30 in the eves, including nibbles for 68rmb, good value in shanghai and great fun sitting in their lovely bar and listening to live pianist and singer who perform from 7.05pm, not quite sure what the significance of this specific time is!
