“Very unnerving breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2012

This hotel is delightful, luxurious but lacks one main ingredient in my view.... warmth and friendliness. We were on a business trip and decided to upgrade from the Novotel Pudong Avenue to Grand Hyatt. Whilst the accommodation was much more luxurious than a Novotel (and why wouldn't it be as a 5* hotel). The lack of human warmth and the excessive behaviour of the restaurant staff made us want to sign out and return to the Novotel. I fully understand that culturally things are done somewhat differently; but to be rude to one's co-workers publicly, and to literally run from table to table in order to be seen to be efficient was, I must say one of the worst experiences I have had and believe me I have travelled extensively.

The Grand Hyatt needs to seriously consider their staff training procedures. The one thing I do not want to see is a waiter running from table to table whilst I am trying to have a relaxing meal.

“Shanghai gigantism up close”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2012

This is a first-class hotel for those who enjoy gazing from heights at Shanghai's even bolder emerging sky-line. The Grand Hyatt combines modern conveniences (excellent gym and sleek styling) with old-world elegance (lovely pool, expansive buffet breakfast). The rooms and beds are comfortable, the bathrooms fully equipped. Service ethos is strong despite the occasional communication challenges, and the managers are outstanding. Our group hosted an event in a private room that was beautifully supported from beginning to end. Adjacent mall ranges from very high-end (Louis Vuitton) to a supermarket in the basement, also a movie theater. The spa services in the hotel and in the mall are pricey but first-rate.

“Great views, Don't be late for brunch!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

I lived in Shanghai for 3+ years and worked in JinMao Tower where this hotel is located but never stayed there. Now I live in BeiJing, so stayed for 4 days this week.Got a room on top floor (85) and the views were Great of course. I did not get a Bund view - suspect that is not available to discounted corporate rates - but still great, airplane level views. The room was very good - not sure why some reviewers winge. Not a lot of drawer space if you are an unpacker-type traveler, but I am not. I liked the trapezoidal shaped room (8510). The floor plan on the back of the door showed there are a lot of different shapes and sizes, hence the knock I ave heard "great hotel, small rooms" . I will stay again!
Oh - about that brunch at the Grand Cafe on 54th floor - buffet - food was fine but not exceptional. And when they say it closes at 10:30, the mean they stop re-stocking at 10:15 and at 10:29 they are emptying EVERYTHING. Beware!!!

Room Tip: Go High!!!!!!

Incredible beautiful building, inside and out, the view from the room is just breathtaking, everything else is just subtle and luxurious.

Room Tip: try to get a view on Shanghai Bund

“Good Gym, Excellent Breakfast Buffet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

As with the other modern hotels I have experienced in Beijing and Shanghai, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai rates very highly. The gym has convenient hours and is well equipped with free weights, cardio, and weight machines. The breakfast spread is excellent, offering both Asian and Western fare. There is also a Starbucks conveniently located in the office tower (2nd floor) that houses the hotel.
