I've stayed at the Radisson New World several times over the past few years, but after consistently struggling with very slow internet speeds, I am debating whether to look elsewhere for good. If you need to get meaningful work done, expect to experience frustration levels that may reach a boiling point - both the wired and wireless connection speeds are abysmal, and have always been that way.
I've usually stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. While it's very spacious and reasonably priced (not too many alternatives, really), the room is getting long in the tooth.... the carpets are getting worn, the dining table and dressers are falling apart and you can tell that the quality of everything wasn't too great to begin with.
That said, it's right across the street from People's Square and the subway station, as well as from the Nanjing Road pedestrian walkway. And compared to some of the other hotels in the vicinity such as the Westin Bund Center and Sofitel (both of which are more luxurious and has higher service standards), it's priced right.
The Radisson New World Shanghai is located right in the center of the city in People's Square, not far from popular shopping street Nanjing East Rd.
The location is probably the best feature of the hotel, as it's convenient to get to most places in Shanghai from the hotel, and there's even a metro station just across the street.
Like many 5-star hotels in China, it's not really a five star hotel, but given some fancy plaque anyway by some tourism board that probably wants to claim that China has more five star hotels than anywhere else. Either way, the hotel is somewhere between a really nice three star and decent four star.
I stayed in a suite and the room was definitely a decent size, and had all the standard amenities.
If you're dead set on staying in People's Square, this is probably a better value option to Le Meridien or JW Marriott (both also in People's Square), but not as luxurious or elegant as other five star hotels in Shanghai.
For a good view of the city, I recommend going to their bar, located on the top floor.
Modern hotel with seperate office area in room. Close to subway and many restaurants located nearby. Staff was friendly and always helpful.
Very clean and comfortable.
Despite the famous name and the great location of the hotel, the service there is bad. First, the staff have a careless attitude and do not care if a guest is unhappy. Most of us agreed it's one of the worst hotels we've ever seen in terms of service. In a 5-day stay for an important group business meeting, my group had the following problems:
1) The internet service, which is quite vital on a business trip, was interrupted for hours on end and they did not care to fix it
2) Two of our rooms had leaky bathrooms, one of them also had a horrible smell in the bathroom
3) Airconditioning was either too cold or too hot in most rooms and couldn't be changed or fixed. The staff was also surprised we complained about a room that was 16 Celsius degrees all the time!!
4) Concierge gives bad advice on where to eat and where to go. They sent me and 2 other people from my group to a dodgy local restaurant where nobody spoke any English and the food was quite weird
