Hotel Cerro Azul was a perfect place to stay while visiting Arenal. Our host Alvaro and his family were so welcoming and friendly-this is genuinely a family business and they do their best to make you feel right at home. The cabina was adorable with nice, comfortable beds, pretty decorations and a fridge - great for keeping bottles of water or wine cool so you can enjoy them on the private deck out back. Plants and bushes make the desk feel very private and we loved swinging in the hammock looking at the volcano and wildlife and stars. The bathroom was also great with lots of natural wood design and hot water. Alvaro was incredibly helpful making reservations for us for various activities and restaurants. His wife makes the BEST breakfast you will have anywhere in Costa Rica. Make sure you get the 'typical' Tico breakfast from her-you will eat a lot of beans in CR, but these are the only ones that will have you coming back for seconds! Great coffee and fresh OJ and tropical fruit, plus eggs and toast - completely worth the $5. The location is great too- views of the volcano, close enough to walk to town (or 5 min drive) but far enough to feel like the wilderness. Alvaro's horse lives in the backyard (so cute!) and right on the back of their property is a pristine stream, great for playing in and swimming. Due to travel delays we were only able to stay 2 nights, which was our biggest regret-we promised Alvaro that next time we would come back for at least a week!

Room tip: All of the cabinas we saw looked great!

First of all, I can't recommend Hotel Cerro Azul enough. It isn't really a "hotel," it is more of a boutique B&B. I doubt you can find anything of this quality or uniqueness for the same price in La Fortuna. It is very impressive- you get the privacy, beauty, cleanliness, amenities & hospitality you would expect at a place four times the price.

This was the first place we stayed on our trip to Costa Rica and I was heartsick for Cerro Azul & the hospitality and professional demeanor of Alvaros, the owner, and his family after we left.

In the bustling town of LaFortuna, Cerro Azul offers a peaceful slice of paradise even though it is only a long walk from downtown. There are four villas, each with a private back porch with chairs, a hammock, and a view of lush greenery and a horse pasture. Costa Rica at its most beautiful! The front porch offers a view of the epic Volcan Arenal!

The beds are incredible comfortable, the showers have hot water, and the A/C is great. The rooms are exceptionally clean and well-cared for. The grounds are well-maintained and landscaped beautifully.

Alavros's wife offers a "typical" Costa Rican breakfast that is an unmatchable deal at $5 a person. HIGHLY recommended!!!! The breakfast is absolutely delicious- I never again had a breakfast so good in the whole country! You can tell it is made with love.

Alvaros is extremely helpful and can book whatever adventure you want at a discount (below published prices) because he is a local. I would recommend booking with him and avoiding the hassle of the tour agencies in town that are just out to sell you anything.

Chatting with Alvaros we learned about Costa Rican culture, his family, and the town of Arenal. If you have the time, I would suggest talking with him! With so many places in Costa Rica owned by Europeans, this is a great opportunity to get a local perspective.

You will notice a lot of people walking on the road past Cerro Azul from town to the La Fortuna waterfall, which let's you know you are in the right place! Definitely walk or drive to the waterfall. It is beautiful!

I want to thank Alvaros and his family for the luxurious villa & the wonderful time we had in La Fortuna. The special place they have created at Cerro Azul made it all more wonderful.

Room tip: All the villas are equally beautiful! If you want TV ask when you book the room.

We absolutely loved our stay in hotel cerro azul. The cabins are modern, clean and very comfortable. The hammocks on the back porch are so relaxing and the area is extremely quiet and relaxing. We slept amazing every night! The hosts are wonderful and the breakfasts are worth every penny.

The issue is that the location is quite far from town with only one single restaurant in the area. That means that for dinner you best have a car or its 20 minutes brisk walk

In summary though a great place to stay and highly recommended.

We can't say enough great things about our stay. We stayed here in Jan 2012 for three days. Cabin was clean, refrigerator in room, free wi-fi, a back porch with hammock, table and chairs made our stay cozy and too short. One day it rained and the back porch with a view to the fields and horses was a great place to read and surf the web. The daily breakfast was excellent and inexpensive at $5.00 per person. The suggestions for local restaurants and tours was excellent and he helped us with independent reservations when we needed it. We will be staying here when we return to La Fortuna again.

We stayed for 2 nights to explore Arenal/La Fortuna and had a lovely stay here. Its a little out of town but its worth it. Big room, balcony and the sounds of the forest all around. You get a good view of volacano and aren't far from the waterfall.
Host was very helpful.
