Lovely people, lovely location
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Apr 2014
We were met at the airport by Rata and his grandson, both lovely people. They provided us with lots of information about Aitutaki whilst we drove to Sunny Beach and gave us lots of advice.

When we arrived we asked whether the water was drinkable and they said they would advise we drink filtered water. They went home and fetched us 4 giant bottles of filtered water for us which I thought was lovely of them to do.

We stayed in the Beach Front Bungalow for one week. To book we had to e-mail them but it was very easy and we paid when we got there. It was extremely clean and comfortable, had good protection from bugs and mosquitos and was the only place in the Cooks where I stayed where ants weren't a huge menace in the rooms! There's no TV signal in Aitutaki so the TV wasn't much use though. The kitchen was good and had all we needed. The water pressure was great also. Another good point was the room never got too hot, the fans were really good and kept the room cooled well.

The beach we stayed on was beautiful and completely deserted (see pictures). The views from the room were beautiful and you could hear the sea. Lots of privacy and feels like you have your own beautiful beach. The water is so warm too.

The owners came to clean the room every couple of days. They also did our laundry for free in their home every few days. They popped over to see us each day to check if we needed anything. They helped us with hiring a scooter and had bikes we could borrow for free. They also booked trips for us (a Lagoon Cruise is a must!) It's a shame I didn't get to meet Aroha (she was away) but Rata and his grandson were so friendly and made our stay feel really homely.

Sunny Beach is walking distance to various shops where you can stock up on food. It is also a short walk to the Pacific Resort and their beach. There aren't many restaurants in Aitutaki but there are a few places to eat nearby to Sunny Beach.

I had initially booked a studio unit for 5 days. However when Aroha met me at the Airport I was informed my unit wasn't ready so alternative accommodation was going to be given to me, at the price of the studio unit. To my amazement I was upgraded to the beachfront cottage which had a beautiful deck in front. The Lodge is very central, in fact in walking distance to a bank, take-aways, petrol station, grocery store etc. I soon got my scooter and licence and explored the whole island, meeting friendly folk wherever I went. Aroha organised my trip on the lagoon with Aitutaki Adventures which was fantastic.

Room tip: I would definitely return to this resort. The beachfront cottage if you can afford it.

We booked a studio at Sunny Beach Lodge and Aroha was very responsive, answering my pre-trip questions about the island and booked us scooters ahead of time. she met us at the airport and upgraded us to the beachfront bungalow for no extra charge. upon arrival, she drove us to the grocery store so we could 'stock up'. the bungalow was fully equipped, very comfortable and met all of our needs for the week we stayed in Aitutaki. The location is perfect, close to shops, the main 'wharf area' (all within 15 minute walk) walkable to both the Pacific Resort and Tamanu. we would walk the beach and enjoy a cocktail at the Pacific in the late afternoon and walked to Tamanu for their famous "Island Night". We would often take a glass of wine, stroll the 100 feet to the beach and watch the sun set over the lagoon. Aroha was a wonderful host, the accommodations were a great value for the price, and we wouldn't hesitate to go back again. The lagoon is unsurpassed in its beauty, colour and amazing sea life. I would highly recommend this accommodation for travellers who appreciate great value for their travel dollars. It's not a 5 star by any means, but if you want clean and comfortable, ability to self-cater and beachfront location for a great price, book here.

Room tip: definitely take one of the beach bungalows.

We really loved spending five days at Sunny Beach Lodge. Aroha met us at the airport and took us to the lodge where we had booked the beachfront villa. It was very clean and comfortable. She told us which shops would be open at the time we arrived - that was really helpful. We also met Rata and were impressed by his friendliness and hospitality.
The location of this lodge is superb. We could sit on our verandah and see the sunsets and the sea was only a few metres away. We spent a lot of time on the verandah watching the sea, we read a lot and had many meals out there too.
It's a self-contained lodge so we could cook independently or eat out. The best casual food was at Uncle Bino's about 200m down the road - their 'Island fries' were sooo yummy and their prices very reasonable. We also enjoyed a dinner at Tupuna's Restaurant inland from the main part of town.
You can swim there and we enjoyed it. The best snorkeling was about 3 kms away near the airport and we loved that.
Overall this was one of the best places we have ever stayed and we had a great holiday - we would love to go back!

Room tip: The beachfront villa is stunning!

We were met at the Airport and transported to and from there by Rata who was very welcoming and hospitable. Nothing too much trouble. The units are clean and spacious, with adequate bathroom (shower), and well equipped kitchen. Its not far from the main town, and restaurants, dairies, and hire places close by. Apart from a cacophony of roosters starting in the early hours (!) it was quiet. Highly recommended for a budget trip to Aitutaki.

Aroha greeted us at the airport with her cheerful smile. We were pleasantly surprised to be allocated the very front beach bungalow. Fully self contained and very clean and comfortable.
The shower was great with good pressure and the bed was one of the biggest Ive slept on. Very comfortable and always gave a great nights sleep. Over head fan in the middle of the room was great on those hot tropical days. Fully functional kitchen with everything we needed. The deck out front was well used for eating meals on. Gorgeous view and very cool.
Shops within walking distance for food supplies which was good as we had to wait a day for a hire scooter from across the island. When we booked at Sunny Beach we never thought to book ahead for a scooter and being Christmas and new year holiday time of course scooters were all booked out but lovely staff at the information centre found one for us.
The beach is quite shallow and fine for keeping cool. An easy walk around the beach to a resort for a meal if you feel like treating yourself, the snorkeling is also great just outside the resort too. A great takeaway place also within easy walking distance that made Delicious pizza and pasta and asian food. Very good prices too.
We stayed 5 days but could have so very easily stayed 2 weeks at Sunny Beach Lodge.
Cant wait to go back and relax some more. A fabulous place with fabulous people.

Room tip: Any of the two beach front bungalows
