We've stayed in several B&Bs in Santa Barbara, and were really excited about James House. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. The first impression didn't help - check-in is from 3-5, but we arrived at 4 to a locked door & no one answering our knocks or doorbells. We called the after-hours number, and Marie walked us through getting in - but it completely lacked the hospitality we come to B&Bs for.
Over the next two days, we answered the door for two other couples who arrived to locked doors and no answers, and were unable to reach Marie by phone. (We were in the State room on the first floor, so the knocking and bell-ringing was right outside our door.) Another couple, who arrived while we were out, were stuck outside for an hour trying to figure out how to get in - after a long flight from the UK, no less. (We heard them complain to Marie the following morning.) We would have understood if something came up once in a blue moon that required the host to step away, but it seems like standard operating procedure here.
We found it unpleasant that breakfast was served promptly at 9 (9:30 on weekends) rather than available for a range of time, as at every other B&B we've stayed at. There was also a sign in the room stating that guests were expected to vacate the rooms by 11:00, whether they were staying another night or not, so the room could be made up. Again, less than hospitable. And there's no communal sitting area to hang out in while the room is being made up - we basically had to finish breakfast, get showered, and get out - which feels more like a hostel than a $220/night B&B.
The room was lovely and breakfast was delicious, but again, there were overlooked details. The room only had one mug which we had to share for water (no coffee or tea in the room)... Odd for a place that so obviously caters to couples. We had breakfast on the patio, which was lovely - except that the umbrellas weren't set up, so one of each couple squinted through the meal. There are no afternoon refreshments - probably because there's no one there in the afternoon to set it up.
In general, it feels like James House is putting the comfort and convenience of its hosts over that of the guests, and that's really unfortunate. Next time, we'll go back to The Cheshire Cat or The Upham - both in the same area, comparably priced, and far more welcoming.
