My friend, Lorie, and I stayed at The Villa May 20, 2011 for a "girls' spa weekend." It was fabulous!!
The moment I walked into the Italianate Castle styled building that is The Villa, I knew this was no ordinary bed and breakfast. The entry way was a beautiful archway with a heavy wooden door that was open and inviting. The reception area took my breath away with its soaring, arched ceiling in blue. Everywhere I looked, there were tapestries, wall scones, and other authentic Italian touches that made me feel that I had just walked into a villa in Florence.
The Manager, Ryan Selby, checked me in early as I had arrived before my friend. The check in was fast and easy, and before I knew it, I was being escorted up the stunning stairway, past the leaded glass windows, to our suite, Stanza 4. Ryan also showed the butler’s pantry outside our door where complementary soft drinks and snacks were available. That was a particularly nice touch.
Stanza 4 was a lovely suite, with a separate bedroom with a king sized bed. The suite was decorated in a rich brick red color scheme, which was very soothing. Everywhere were nice touches, such as the letter from the owner thanking us for staying, to the huge Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable, with a new mattress, but is sagged towards the middle just a little. I told the owner, Jeneane, about it the next morning. She thanked me and said that she would have it looked at immediately. Also, it was a bit warm upstairs, and when we mentioned it to Ryan, he not only turned down the thermostat to the temperature we wanted, but showed me where it was in the hallway so I could further adjust it. That showed me that if something is wrong, they will do everything in their power to make it right.
We decided to eat in for dinner and were we every glad we did! We had dinner in the Hearth Room. It was terrific. We shared the wild mushroom bruschetta, which was very flavorful, then I had the Salmon Cucumber Coulis (excellent), and Lorie had the filet, which she could cut with a butter knife. I also tried the wine flight, “Pick Me, Squeeze Me, Make Me Wine.” It included three generously poured wines that were delightful. Our server, Trey was very attentive, and entertained us with stories of growing up in Singapore and other places in the Far East.
As this was a "girls' spa weekend," of course we had to have massages that evening after dinner. My massage therapist, Jamie, gave me a deep tissue massage that was one of the best massages I have ever had (and I have had monthly massages for years). She was very attentive to the areas that were tight, and was able to get several stubborn knots to release. At the end of the massage, I was so relaxed I was limp. I highly recommend her!! Jeff did Lorie’s massage, and she also said he was excellent.
As if that wasn’t enough, after the massages, we wandered into the cozy, wood paneled bar where the bartender, Kevin, saw to our every need. I tried the Port wine flight, and even though I’m not a big fan of Port, it was fun to try the various Ports from around the globe. We wanted to try a cheese flight, but didn’t really want the ones offered (yes, we are picky, or “high-maintenance,” as my husband says). Kevin went out of his way to suggest various cheeses that might appeal to us, and then had the kitchen make up a special cheese and fruit plate. And, even better, because a regular Friday special is to get a cheese or desert flight for half price if you purchase a wine flight, the special cheese plate was half off. After that, we stumbled to our luxurious Stanza 4 to collapse.
The next morning, breakfast was served out in the lovely courtyard beside The Villa, with a lion fountain burbling in the background. I had the Gran Marnier Brioche French Toast, which was made from bread backed on site. It was fabulous! It had a slight crusty texture on the outside and was light and fluffy on the inside. The flavor of the Gran Marnier came through very nicely, even with the maple syrup (which I think was real). Lorie had the Breakfast Panzolla, which she said was quite good. Trey was again our server, and took great care of us. We were running late for our spa appointment, and he not only got our food and drinks out to us promptly, but also notified the spa that we were running a little late but would be there soon.
We then headed to the spa where Lorie had a pedicure and a facial. Emerald, my cosmetologist, took me downstairs, and got me settled in for my treatments. She was very smooth and professional during the bikini wax, and did a wonderful job with my facial. She asked penetrating questions about my lifestyle and skin care routine, and then recommended the appropriate facial. When I asked about lash dyeing, for which I was not scheduled, she was able to do it right then and there. She was terrific and I highly recommend her, too.
All told, it was a wonderful experience, and one that Lorie and I intend to repeat. All of the staff at The Villa go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and taken care of.
