“Superb boutique hotel”

Our group of 5 stayed here for 3 nights & loved every minute - from the huge 4 poster bed to the pristine beach & fabulous international quality food. Attention to detail was sublime. The Pepper Tree Restaurant was fabulous for breakfast & dinner. Plus the food prices were competitive with outside the gates but standard, freshness & presentation world class. We have been to Vietnam 4 times & we will be back again.

“Great expectations”

Five of us stayed here for three nights in Jan 2012. Where in the world are you greeted with a juice, iced tea, lemongrass scented refresher towel, and a canape presented beautifully on arrival?Where in the world do they serve you complimentary cold bottled water by the pool or on the sandy beach, & a juice and refresher towel? Where in the world can you eat in the hotel restaurant of a 5star hotel for four courses at $9.50US?
The breakfast presentation is unique & immaculate. The staff friendly as has been stated .
Now let me cover some points . Yes it may be expensive per night, but unlike many places we have stayed around the world, you are not ripped off by the 'internal costs'. Now don't compare to out on the street but food and beverage is for example, we ate at Pepper Tree for five entrees, five mains, two desserts, wine and soft drinks all up 70US max total. The presentation and taste were top class, we know we have a caterer in our party.
We have had a bed turn down every night with a beautifully presented dessert.Sad to leave but we will be back.

Dear ce58,

Thank you for your great review of your recent stay with us here at La Veranda. It is always a pleasure to receive feedback from our guests that can see and appreciate the essence of all we strive to create here. I am glad to read that you enjoyed the welcome to the resort, our restaurant and indeed most agree that the inclusions of drinks and snacks by the pool or at the beach certainly add value to the stay. We do try as we can to offer many benefits to our guests and have a variety of options and pricing in our restaurants. We greatly appreciate your comments not to compare us with the surrounding local restaurants as our overheads, hygiene standards and ingredients make it impossible to be able to do so.

Your kind comments will certainly be passed onto all the team here and this will serve as encouragement as we continue to maintain and improve the quality of our services. It will be our great pleasure to welcome you back soon.

Sincerely,

Jon Bourbaud

“Pleasant one week stay, short flight & convenient from HoChiMinh City.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My husband & I stayed at this property from 21 - 28 January 2012 over the Tet/Lunar New Year break.
It,s about a 10 - 15 minute drive from the airport to the hotel and there was a complimentary transfer service and we were offered bottled water and cold towels.
On arrival at the hotel we were directed to the bar area and were offered a welcome drink & refreshing towels whilst the paperwork was completed and then taken to our room.
We had booked a one bedroom villa directly via the hotels website in which the description had stated a four poster bed and so we were somewhat disappointed to find that we had been assigned a room with two single beds placed together, albeit with a double duvet especially as this had been booked in early October and at a rate of around USD331.00 per night.
Our rate did not include breakfast which was offered at an additional rate of USD15.00 per person.
Overall the room was pleasant with an indoor bathroom which we prefer instead of the outdoor type which is popular among many other Asian resorts.
There was a well stocked mini bar, television, tea & coffee making facilities, air conditioning, however a lack of accessible plug sockets.
We were in room 210.
Would suggest a mosquito coil for the room and balcony, we mentioned this and were given a can of spray.
During our stay we didn,t really see any sign of an evening turn down service which would have been nice to have a check of fresh towels and a re-stock of shampoo and amenities especially as in this environment numerous showers are typically taken a day.
Room service did deliver a small evening desert treat on a daily basis which was a nice touch and complimentary water was offered at the pool and beach.
The reception staff did offer us a complimentary move to a suite for the duration of our stay in order to accommodate our request for a four poster bed, however upon seeing the room we elected to stay were we were as the other option was close to the side wall and the hotel currently under construction next door, and we preferred the location and outlook from our room which was close to the pool, central and amongst the gardens.
I would recommend that the hotel improves its website as we tried multiple times to view the photo gallery without success, and there are very few photographs of the different type of rooms and the descriptions between villas and suites are very unspecific.
There appeared to be only three rooms that had a direct beach view and I feel that a map of the layout of the property would also be useful on the website and enable people to make a more informed decision about their specific requirements.
If I were to return I would carefully reconfirm my reservation and check the exact location of the room that we would be assigned as its a fact that the hotel currently under construction is rather unsightly and very close to the La Veranda property. Although the hotel have made an effort to disguise the building with what looked like palm fronds and the main shell of the property has been completed, there is alot of land that still needs to be cleared and all of the internal decor and construction to be finished.
During our stay we were not bothered by any noise presumably as work had ceased due to the Tet holidays.
Despite also being handed flyers frequently advertising live music next door at Amigo,s we were not affected by that either.
The hotel have live music each night around the bar area which seemed to begin around 6.30pm and finish by 10.30pm.
We did not eat at the hotel as there are several other local options either at the beach or just outside of the property and the hotel also operates a complimentary bus service into town should you wish to eat at the night market and a return taxi is less than VND 50,000.
Some of the prices in the upstairs restaurant did seem somewhat expensive to us but we live in Vietnam and so perhaps have a slightly unrealistic expectation but the setting is beautiful if you are looking for that type of dining and ambiance.
The prices and selection offered around the garden area, I thought were fine and not unreasonable for the type of hotel - pizza, sandwiches and similar.
There is a spa located on the property but I cannot comment on this as we did not use it.
The hotel offers complimentary bicycles which we did use and they were in perfectly good condition.
The staff were pleasant and helpful in answering any questions and the pool and beach staff were excellent and there were ample sun loungers and towels in both locations.
The hotel is on a small plot and not isolated as other properties are along the same stretch of beach, but it is a very nice setting constructed in a colonial style with beautiful landscaping.
We very much enjoyed our stay here despite the fact that I feel our nightly rate was high and I had a slightly higher expectations of the room, but perhaps this reflected it being the Tet holiday period?

“fabulous setting”

We were a little concerned about the building work after reading previous reviews especially when we found our room was right next to the wall separating La Veranda from the new construction, however we didn't see or hear any sigh of work being done during our 5 night stay. The building still has a lot of work to be done so perhaps the workers were having a break for TET. Our room was ok but nothing special and quite small. No drawers apart from small bedside. No shower gel only hand wash. Shampoo, conditioner and body lotion supplied in refillable containers, environmentally friendlty I know but a bit cheapskate for this class of hotel. Nightly turndown service was a little strange. Clean towels in bathroom but no tidying. A little treat, sweets or coconut left amongst our stuff on the table, mosquito nets not placed around the beds. OK not really important in the scheme of things but I would have expected more attention to detail given the price we paid.

We booked a tour through the hotel to go to the south of the island. Overpriced and disappointing. We were supposed to go to see a fishing village and waterfall according to the itinery neither of which we did. The driver told us there was no water in the waterfall but didnt offer to stop and let us look as we drove past it. We missed the fishing village completely. We did go to a beach where the driver wanted us to stay for 3 hours but as it was not as nice as the beach at La Veranda we asked to leave early. He didnt offer to take us anywhere else instead so the tour only lasted 3 hours instead of 4. An expensive mistake for over 40 pounds.

Thats the moaning out of the way, now for the good bits. The breakfast was the best we have had in Vietnam, lovely freshly baked croissants and bread and an excellent choice of hot and cold dishes. A wonderful setting looking over the sea, only spoiled by a number of guests smoking. It would be a good idea to have a seperate section for smokers.

The pool area was good with plenty of comfortable loungers and attentive pool boys. Bottles of water, cold towels and sorbet were brought to us daily. The pool was lovely to swim in very warm. The grounds of the hotel are beautiffuly kept with lots of foliage and tropical flowers.

Good wifi connection throughout the hotel n=but a little annoying having to put a code in to log on every time.

We only ate in the restaurant once during our stay as there are several good restaurants in the local area and in the town which is just a short taxi ride away. It was a special buffet for TET but not as good as we were expecting, very average.
Although I have made negative comments it is a generally good hotel and we did enjoy our stay here, I think maybe our expectations were too high bearing in mind it is Vietnam but if a hotel charges top price they really should give top service.

I am a little biased about all things Vietnamese so may be a little bit spills over into this review as well but it was the perfect holiday resort.

As soon as we arrived we are whisked off in the hotel car with cold towels and water to refresh our selves, the rooms were not yet ready so we wandered around the place and it was lush green with beautiful plants and flowers.

The pool was a tad small, but when you have the sea in front of you no ones complaining.

The room was quiet and matresses just perfect so slept very very well. The breakfast was lavish with lots of variety and the service exceptional.

The restaurants and spa are a little expensive but lots of inexpensive but excellent options available both on the beach and also down the road from the hotel.

Dont forget to rent scooters just across the hotel gate and explore Phu Quoc, there are some excellent beaches which are not on the tourist map.

The Internet is free for Guests but you get a connection only in the main areas.
