“Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Mahahual, although still recovering from the hurricane damages is just paradise on earth, very quite, especially on weekends (where cruise ships are not there). Luna de Plata is small and comfortable. Many rooms have sea view. The beach is nice and you are almost always alone. We were there in February and it was empty. Sometimes there was no hot water in the room, but the staff quickly fixed it.
IIf you do not like crowded places go there. If you dive search for Yolanda Buceo and you will experience a nice dive with a pleasant dive master from Spain.

Room Tip: On the first floor.

“Liked Hotel Luna de Plata!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

We just returned from a one night stay in Mahahual. We traveled down from Playa Del Carmen just to check it out. We chose this hotel because of price and it was pet friendly. We will return to this hotel for those same reasons, but also because we really liked it. The location was just right for us...on the end of town further away from the cruise ship areas and not right in the middle of "town". It was quiet as we were there on a weekend night when no cruise ships are in the area. Beach area was nice with nice beach beds, palapas, service on beach by hotel. One thing to know...the hotel does not provide beach towels, so bring your own!

The rooms were basic, but clean and adequate. Service was good, owners and employees there very friendly.

We ate dinner at the attached restaurant the one night we were there. My husband and I shared the grouper ravioli and OMG!! I regretted sharing as it was fabulous! Our friends had the special, which was spinach ravioli and they liked theirs too. I thought the food was a bit pricey ($150 pesos for the ravioli only), but then again, this place is way off the beaten path and it costs to get goods in to this area. We'd definitely eat at the restaurant again.

Lastly, this place is very pet friendly. Upon arrival the receptionist asked us our dogs name and remembered it throughout our stay. Nice touch...

If you're looking for ritzy and high end, you probably should avoid Mahahual altogether. It's not that kind of place. It is, however, a lovely place to spend 3-4 nights. We only stayed one night, but I really wished we had been there 3-4 nights.

Room Tip: We chose the cheapest room, but next time would go up a notch so as to get a peek of the ocean.

“Average hotel down the quiet end of the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

When looking for accommodation in Mahahual online, there seemed to be little that was within our budget. Hotel Ristorante Luna de Plata was the cheapest we could find online and it looked nice so we reserved a standard room for two nights, which had a double bed, air conditioning, safety deposit box and bathroom.

When we arrived, we were a little disappointed with the room, mainly because it was very dark and the bathroom smelled a bit rotten!

It took about five minutes to walk into the main 'hub' of Mahahual from the hotel and whilst we don't mind staying a little further away from the centre of the action, there was nothing happening down the end of the beach where Luna de Plata was situated so everything there just seemed a bit flat. It probably didn't help that it was low season when we visited.

Either way, we craved a little more life and by chance, when we got off the bus, we were offered a room in the centre of Mahahual, staying with a lovely American / Mexican couple so after one night in Luna de Plata, we upped sticks and moved to a more central and lively spot.

Luna de Plata certainly wasn't the worst place I've stayed and was fairly reasonably priced but I'm glad we had the opportunity to move elsewhere and make the most of our stay in Mahahual.

“best price to value around”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

Very descent and clean rooms, right opposite the beach, placed a few hundred meters from the boardwalk so nice and quiet, very good drinks and Italian food in the restaurant.
