We just returned from a one night stay in Mahahual. We traveled down from Playa Del Carmen just to check it out. We chose this hotel because of price and it was pet friendly. We will return to this hotel for those same reasons, but also because we really liked it. The location was just right for us...on the end of town further away from the cruise ship areas and not right in the middle of "town". It was quiet as we were there on a weekend night when no cruise ships are in the area. Beach area was nice with nice beach beds, palapas, service on beach by hotel. One thing to know...the hotel does not provide beach towels, so bring your own!
The rooms were basic, but clean and adequate. Service was good, owners and employees there very friendly.
We ate dinner at the attached restaurant the one night we were there. My husband and I shared the grouper ravioli and OMG!! I regretted sharing as it was fabulous! Our friends had the special, which was spinach ravioli and they liked theirs too. I thought the food was a bit pricey ($150 pesos for the ravioli only), but then again, this place is way off the beaten path and it costs to get goods in to this area. We'd definitely eat at the restaurant again.
Lastly, this place is very pet friendly. Upon arrival the receptionist asked us our dogs name and remembered it throughout our stay. Nice touch...
If you're looking for ritzy and high end, you probably should avoid Mahahual altogether. It's not that kind of place. It is, however, a lovely place to spend 3-4 nights. We only stayed one night, but I really wished we had been there 3-4 nights.
Room Tip: We chose the cheapest room, but next time would go up a notch so as to get a peek of the ocean.
