My partner and I stayed at this hotel for one night only. It is close to the ruins (a short taxi ride away), and our room was pleasant enough with a nice view of the swimming pool and garden area behind the hotel.
If I had any gripe it was with the swimming pool, which was a little dirty.
I would recommend this hotel for people on a budget, but would probably stay at one of the other options next time.

“Not secure, Big repair needed, cold welcome”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2008

Our hotel stay was part of a tour booked though an agency, so i have no idea how to compare to other hotels in the area.
The location was good, the pool is very nice, and so is the big garden.
The rooms overlook both.. good view.

But there is a long list of problems :
- when we arrived with our voucher they had no trace of a reservation. We were lucky they had another room available, especially as we arrived late. Of course, no excuses.

- we got to the room, and there was no TV.. it was removed from its place with the wires showing.. "the storm damaged our system.. no, other rooms have no tv either".

- then i inspected the door, and there was one of those infamous one button locks that i always see in medium range hotels, which feel so cheap and ridiculously easy to open. That would have been ok if there was not a large space in the wood of the door around the lock, space between door and the wall. A space large enough to slide something and force the door open. Which i did from the outside in 2 seconds with a plastic card (phone card, credit card whatever). Ridiculous ! And scary.

I did the test again in front of the unfriendly receptionist who at that point turned rude and hostile because i made him feel like an idiot, and showed him the problem he pretends to ignore.

So i asked for another room. Slightly less damaged door, but i guarantee you that in 30 seconds with something harder like a screwdriver, i'd get inside too.

In fact, if you walk in the corridor and look at other rooms, you notice that a lot of them have been "visited"...

- then we had to call the reception again, because we didn't know how to turn on the aircon. Problem, the phone was not working. so here we walk again to the reception for the 3rd time !
They sent us a guy who was nice but who stayed for like 25 minutes in the room working trying to fix the phone. He did not make it. So i asked him to leave so we could at last have a rest.
I felt like i was a "beta tester" of the hotel, doing THEIR job of maintenance, except i was paying for the room.

- last annoying thing, there was no electricity plug to be found in the room.
Only one razor plug in the bathroom.
Thinking to recharge your mobile, your camera, your laptop ? Only one at a time..

In general the room looked nice, but like another reviewer said, too much concrete.
The food at the breakfast was ok, the staff at the restaurants were nice (they expect tip like always).
The lady at the reception during the day was nice, unlike the guy in charge the night before.. but for all the problems we had, all she could give us was to check out one hour later, 1 instead of 12, how generous, how flexible.. so we still had to wait for our pick up for 3 hours outside of our room.
Of course the obvious reason is they have to clean the room before they give it to other customers, but the hotel looked like 80% empty at the time we came, i doubt that it would have been full the next evening..

And when our pick up finally came, the evening guy had taken his shift, and he didn't help us with our suitcases.
They sure will not see us again, and i don't recommend to go, unless you have to, and beware to your property inside the room.

  • Liked — The pool and the view from the room
  • Disliked — Lots of problem, maintenance to be done, but staff considers it normal

“concrete bed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2008

We stayed one night at Uxmal so we could get an early start at the ruins the following morning. The hotel was cheap and only a short drive to the ruins.

The lobby area looked great, so we were very optimistic when we checked in. However, the room was a disappointment. Rather than having a mattress on top of box springs, the mattress was on a concrete platform. Not surprisingly, the bed was very hard. Fortunately, the room had two beds, so we stacked both mattresses on one concrete platform and it worked out fine.

Also, the TV was missing. There was a shelf and cables for it, but no TV. That wasn't a big deal, though. We were there to see ruins, not watch Spanish-language TV shows. However, the missing TV did make the room feel pretty low-rent. Of course, the room actually was cheap, so maybe that was appropriate.

Breakfast was included. It wasn't very good, but it wasn't terrible, either.

Overall the hotel served it's purpose of being a cheap stop-over near the ruins.

After seeing the ruins we stopped for a drink at the Lodge at Uxmal which is a hotel literally right next to the ruins entrance. The place looked pretty nice and we wished we had stayed there. However, that place is probably more expensive, so you can't really compare it fairly to Mission Uxmal.

Uxmal is a reasonable drive from the Chichen Itza area (2-3 hours). The previous night we stayed in Valladolid near Chichen Itza. The following morning we saw Chichen Itza, and went swimming in the Dzitnup cenote in the afternoon (beautiful). In the late afternoon and early evening, we drove to Uxmal with a stop in Merida for Burger King and the ATM.

For us, it seemed like it was easy to get lost in Merida, so I would not necessarily recommend driving into the city unless you are good at asking directions. I believe you can turn off to Uxmal before actually driving into Merida. Anyway, after we finally got back out of Merida, the remaining drive to Uxmal was easy and very well-marked. That itinerary worked out very well.

After Uxmal we were heading toward Belize. It's about a 5 hour drive from Uxmal to Chetumal, but the drive is interesting because it goes through a lot of little towns which are not overrun by tourist. It seemed like we were seeing the "real" Mexico. If you are driving from Uxmal toward Belize I would not recommend driving farther than Chetumal, because the border crossing is not trivial. You might want to stop in Bacalar rather than going into Chetumal.

“a nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2008

The room was big, we had in one room two double beds. The room had also a balcony. It was a really nice stay, but if wouldn't had ranted a car it would be a little hard to get to the uxmal ruins, because they are 2 km away.

The sheets were cleans as the room. The food in the restaurant downstairs was deliciuos.

The most impressive was the nature around the hotel. It was really like we were in the middle of the jungle.

Stayed here for a night whilst visiting Uxmal. It is a few km from the entrance to the site, so although it is convenient, there are closer hotels. It is adjacent to the main road though.

The hotel was very quiet when we were there. It is quite a large hotel but there were very few cars. The check-in staff were also the only ones we encountered who didn't speak any english, although they were friendly. Room was of quite a good size, though the decor was dated. Breakfast was not bad but not great either, it was not a buffet so there wasn't that much of it. There was nothing particularly wrong with the place, it just isn't very inspiring.

In summary, it was decent value for the price, but there were definitely nicer options closer to the site. We ate at the Club Med by the site and had a really nice meal there.

The site itself was magnificent. Particularly liked the pyramid that you can climb and then look out over the whole site. Saw a lot of lizards amongst the ruins as well, though they camouflage themselves very effectively.

  • Liked — Good value
  • Disliked — Seemed tired and dated
