“5 star location but needs a refresh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

We have stayed at Sails for many years and there is no doubt this is a top location, beach front at Horseshoe Bay. But this year we felt fed up with the tired old kitchen utensils and just a feeling that the place lacks that extra special touch. Advertised as self-contained but very old utensils, buckled fry-pan, dirty toaster, blunt knives and one small packet of dishwashing detergent. If you are travelling as a couple there are lots of families here which take over the pool and BBQ area. But it is still a beautiful and reasonably priced location, although we will stay (upgrade) to a better place for next year.

“Beautiful spot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2010

My husband and I were looking for a weekend get-away and found the perfect spot on Horseshoe Bay. Sails on Horseshoe sits right on the bay (on the quiet side) but just moments away from the shops. We stayed in an ocean front, downstairs, one bedroom unit and just loved it! The managers, Chris & Alistair were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The unit was clean and comfortable with everything you'd need, including a coffee plunger. We had swims in the pool, walks on the beach and a generally relaxing time all weekend. We had dinner one night down the road at the Bungalow Bay backpackers and can definitely recommend the green curry. Fish-n-chips another night - not so great, but the mexican restaurant looked good so we'll give that one a go next time around. Beautiful spot to stay!

“Great location but getting tired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2009

Stayed for a couple of nights at Sails on Horseshoe in July.
The location is fantastic - we have stayed at Sails several times and I do think it's the best situated at Horseshoe bay as it's away from the pub (noise) but only a 2 minute walk. My only complaint is that the resort is getting very tired and badly in need of sprucing up - it needs a paint job, the furniture in the rooms is old, dated and shabby - comfortable but not 4 stars like the place presents itself and overpriced for the quality. Having said that we'll probably stay there again, but lower your expectations that it's going to be modern and well presented.

“Great location - good little apartment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2009

Stayed at Sails on Horseshoe for 3 nights in July 2009. Had a great little 1 bedroom ocean front apartment on the ground floor. The location is sensational. An easy walk from the bus stop at Horseshoe Bay and brilliant views from the front door. Across the road and you're on the beach. Perfect.

Apartment 5 is well kitted out with most mod-cons including a washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, sound system, and disappointingly out of place, an old television with a remote that didn't work. If you're on Magnetic Island after dark, there's not an awful lot to do, so the telly could do with an upgrade!

The negatives to my stay were a very uncomfortable, old bed that moved all over the place when you as much as leant on it. It also annoyingly scraped on the floor everytime it moved a centimetre. Bedspread and curtains need an urgent update to something a little fresher.
The bathroom floor didn't feel like it had been cleaned before I moved in - was all very gritty and sandy. Maybe part of the beach feel?!

Given the apartment wasn't serviced unless you stayed more than 7 days, the four tissues that were supplied, didn't really go the distance. And the half a roll of toilet paper had limited shelf life! They sneakily give you a spare roll, but it's the cheapest, nastiest paper, you might as well go and take some leaves of the palm trees to use. You then get slugged extra money if you choose to top up your supplies through reception. My toilet seat was broken too - it didn't sit square on the bowl.

Apartment 5 came complete with a spa bath if you're into that kind of thing.

Sofa appeared to need a good clean. Dirty cleverly disguised in the navy blue upholstery.

If you're on the ground floor, you can hear every footstep and every piece of furniture being moved around in the apartment above which can become very annoying.

The only other minor concern were the dodgy locks on the front sliding door and flyscreen. Be careful when you leave that you check they've locked properly.

Overall, great location. Really well kitted out apartment with all facilities you'd need but needs a little bit spending on the furnishings to give it a modern feel.

“terrible treatment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2009

I am an owner of a Painting company in Townsville and we have just completed major work on Magnetic Island as a result of this I rewarded 2 of my employees, husband and wife on their 10th wedding aniversery with 2 nights at Sails on Horsehoe. My employees were sworn at by the Manager for leaving an exterior light on, as far as I know the electricity bill is part of the charge for the room. On a separate occasion that night my employee was sworn at for smoking in the designated smoking area. As a result my employees requested to change their booking to another night, or a refund which could have been credited to my account as they were made to feel uncomfortable, they were refused this request. Prior to finding out what the situation was with my employees I was phoned up and the manager and cleaner made a complaint against my employees stating that they had had a domestic argument and had trashed the room and that I would have to pay a $100 cleaning fee to clean the room so that they could re rent the room which I had paid for, there was no comment on what would I like to do with the room, so I went no you are not going to re rent the room I will send an other employee and his wife who had worked on the Island. I found out later in the day that my honeymoon employees had not had a domestic argument and had not trashed the room and had not stolen the key, it was returned to the motel by the taxi driver after it was discovered in my female employees handbag. I am horrified that the manager of this establishment would slander my employees to me when they are highly valued members of my company and have never shown this behaviour. I will never recommend this facility to any of my clients or friends. I think that these people are solely responsible for their establishment going broke
