“Faults aside, depending on what time of year it is and how much you pay...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

Anyone can find fault with any motel, that's a fact. People that complained about this motel that paid $44 in February, IMHO, don't have much to gripe about. Neither do the people that complain about the I90 being on a hilltop right outside the motel -- that's what heavy doors, blinds, and air conditioners are for, to drown out the noise. I paid $100 a night in early August, I feel any place that charges that much is a real rip-off, yet one's got to consider the time of year -- peak tourist season, go figure. I dodged a HUGE bullet, leaving 5 days before the big bike rally, which then costs upwards of $300, and 700,000 bikers converge on the town. Again, go figure -- it's a mecca for bikers all year 'round! If there's a worry about ambient traffic noise, it's not the Interstate, it's the normal Harley owner who gets 'shorties' installed two weeks after he/she buys the bike! Yet I'm here to tell you, I didn't meet one single biker who wasn't decent as decent gets.

After reading other review prior to staying there, I naturally looked at the carpeting once I arrived and immediately thought I saw lots and lots of stains -- until I realized it was the kind of carpeting that has grain, and one scuff of a foot makes it look way darker, hence the 'stain' look.

One day I came back after a long day of sightseeing, only to find my door halfway open. The cleaning people didn't slam the door like it needed -- nothing was missing, no harm, no foul. Honest mistake. Yet some would rant and rage about something like that, and ignore the simple fact that everything was okay.

The (much needed) WiFi was damned good. The room was comfortable and clean, the staff were all very nice and helpful, especially Sheryl.

The morning chow was really well put-on, from waffles to scrambled eggs, to sausage gravy and biscuits.

I'd avoid the 'inner' rooms adjacent to the swimming pool -- unless you love humidity and the smell of chlorine, as well as a pool area that's over 30 years old at least. Get the picture?

BOTTOM LINE: IF I STAYED THERE IN ANY OFF-SEASON TIME AND PAID $44, I'D BE HAPPY AS HELL. THEN AGAIN, IF I HAD MY EVER-S0-COMPLAINING EX WITH ME, SHE'D BE CRABBING UP A STORM -- LIKE I SAID, YOU CAN FIND FAULT VERY EASILY WITH ALMOST EVERY MOTEL, MANY PEOPLE DID WITH THE STURGIS BEST WESTERN, BUT IF YOU TAKE A STEP BACK AND COMPARE IT TO SOME REAL DUMPS, THIS PLACE IS A VERY DECENT PLACE TO STAY.

“Pretty good.”

Right after we checked in, Strugis was in a power outage for 5 hours! The hotel's hands were tied, but they went above and beyond to help people, by going out and buying battery powered lanterns. I was impressed by that. It's an older facility, well maintained. A very nice pool too! The one thing I avoid, normally, is outer entrances, this hotel has inner and outer. If you are like me, I would request pool side room.

“It was good for a laugh, but we won't be back!”

This review is not directed at the employee who checked us in. She was very nice, and as helpful as she could be.
The motel is tucked underneath the interstate. It's very close, but the traffic was high enough it didn't bother. Upon entering the office, we discovered that this facility was more of a 'Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Gift Shop' (the tip should have been the Interstate signs trumeting their wide selection of souvinirs) than a motel.
Check in went quickly and smoothly. We drove around to our room, and were almost deafened when we got out of the car. Turns out there was a railroad about 30' from our room! The good news is that no more trains went by during our stay.
In our 'suite,' we discovered two main rooms. The bedroom was of adequate size and had a full closet. There was a little Vizio flat screen on the dresser. The operative word is 'little.' It was too small to watch comfortably from the far bed. The bathroom was adequate, but didn't have an outside sink to allow someone to wash while someone else was bathing.
After examining the 'sitting' room and the rest of the complex, we had to assume the designer/furnisher hadn't had Hotel 101, or even stay much in a motel There was an old sofa. My father sat down and nearly disappeared! It took considerable effort to extract him. The TV stand (which had an old 20" CRT set) was not in line with the sofa, requiring the viewer to sit at an angle and turn the TV toward the sofa. The dining area had a wet bar, fridge, and microwave. There was a huge area that was presumably for a table. As my father said, you could hold a dance in there. The window opened fully, had no screen, and was low the ground, allowing anyone who wished to step directly into the room through the window.
We didn't check the pull-out bed until late. We shouldn't have been surprised when we discovered no bedding on it! My sister tried it (very brave to lay on it without sheets) and pronounced it very uncomfortable. I went to the office and asked if they had a rollaway. The nice clerk apologized for the condition of the pull-out, and said she'd be right back with a rollaway. She came back carrying a large black case. This was the 'rollaway.' She explained how to set it up. I returned to the room and we began setting it up. It was really more like a camp cot than a rollaway. Testing the bed the first time caused a collapse at one end. We then found there was only one sheet. Back to the office, who provided another sheet. As I returned to the room, I teased my sister that it was another fitted sheet. We laughed---and then unfolded it, and found it WAS another fitted sheet!
More entertaining layout: To access the ice machine, pool, restaurant, and office, you went under the stairs and proceeded through a creepy-feeling hall. It ended under another set of stairs, and then into the pool area. Ice machines sat along the edge of the pool area. Then, assuming you choose the right door, you go to the restaurant, casino, or office. One area, that was not barricaded, was under construction, and the floor felt as if it would give way as I crossed it. Needless to say, we got lost trying to find the breakfast area.
The breakfast was weak. Little variety, few places to sit.
I have to assume this motel makes it by being able to charge anything they want during the annual rally and selling souvenirs. Come to think of it, perhaps the huge empty space in the room was for motorcycle storage! While the price was good, we won't be back.

“One of the worst motels I've ever stayed in”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

We stayed here with a baseball team. The rooms were not clean and looked like they hadn't been redone in decades. A friend checked out because her bathroom was so dirty. I would love to find something positive to say about this place and always try to but I can't! We were in an "annex" type room which was horrible. Friend had one of their "suites" which was better. There is an indoor pool and an adjoining Mexican restaurant that was ok. There aren't a lot of options in Sturgis but something has to be better!

“Staff really took care of us!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2011

This was my family's second stay at BW Sturgis. Both stays have been most pleasant. The staff was EXCELLENT! From check-in to check-out. We were made to feel very welcomed. Comfortable, warm beds. Hot breakfast in the morning. Daughter left spendy eye glasses in room after we left town. I called back & McKayla (spelling) not only found the glasses but sent them out ASAP. I recieved them promptly! Thanks, McKayla & Shirley & Keri & rest of crew! We will be back.
