“empty room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2012

We were very disappointed in our hotel room. Although freshly painted and clean, the extremely small room was totally unfurnished. There was only a very small bistro table filled with a small coffee maker with 2 plastic wrapped styrofoam cups and plastic wear / packaged amenities for the Maxwell House coffee, and no room for another thing. There was no place at all to put our stuff, so we had to put it on the floor. I asked for a piece of furniture, but they had nothing to offer, no chair, no small table, no small desk, NADA. Apparently it is all "on order" and will not arrive for another 3 weeks. That was a huge disappointment. Additionally, the only parking is totally separate, at a minimum of $25/day. We had to pay $32 per day on our arrival because the less expensive parking garage was full. Front staff was very nice andnot to blame, but we won't return to this hotel.

“Unbeatable location”

I really recommend the Herbert Hotel in San Francisco. It's located on Powell Street, the main street in San Francisco, two blocks from Union Square, on the street of the streetcar. I had a problem in my bathroom and the solved very fast. The rooms are very good and the price very reasonable. It' my second time in San Francisco and also my second time on the Herbert Hotel.

“Can't beat the location”

I'm not sure if we were just unlucky with our room or if the website developers are using false photos or a serious amount of photoshop but our room was tiny, very bare and pretty noisy!
It's a strange set up, almost hostel like, but I have to say it was really clean and served its purpose for our 5 day stay!
By nature, downtown San Fran is a busy, bustling city so be warned, they start their mornings pretty early with the cable cars etc, they will wake you at 6am!
Also, the walls are paper thin in the hotel, the girl next to us had a cold and I could hear her coughing and sneezing alot which was annoying!
Another positive is that there is a PHENONEMAL breakfast diner about two doors up YUM!!

Room Tip: If there are any away from the street, that would help your sleep!

All of our room types are reflected in our website as they are. They have the red colorful set up or they have the more white and silver set up, we try to show both styles on our website as accurate as possible. Being a building from 1908 some of the rooms are on the small side but this is also one of the reasons we have the rooms in a more simple style without a lot of clutter. We don't want you to feel that you are jammed into a little room. We strive very hard to keep our rooms to the highest degree of cleanliness so I appreciate that you have noticed this. Downtown is very noisy, all of our rooms have double pained windows but still you can hear the faint sounds of the cable car at night, which does go along with the great location in the middle of everything. As for our walls being paper thin, most of the walls are new with new strong modern insulation so it might be that you had a room with a connecting door as that might cause a little more noise to travel between the rooms.
There are over 1500 restaurants within a quarter mile of the Herbert Hotel so I am excited to say that there are at least 4 great breakfast spots within 2 blocks of the hotel and almost any kind of food you could ask for.
Thank you for staying with us.

“Good location and good value”

After spending three miserable nights in the Union Square Plaza Hotel, I phoned the Hebert in desperate hope of a brighter, quieter, more comfortable room. The brochure showed clean, brightly decorated, pleasant rooms, and the one we were assigned did not disappoint. The seventh floor location had surprisingly little noise, since the windows were good and we were high above the street. Although the bathroom was tiny, the room itself had enough space for a chair and mini-fridge (hooray!), which was a nice bonus. The second floor also has microwaves, a coffee maker, and coin-operated laundry. You really can't beat the location or the price, and while you shouldn't expect luxury, this hotel supplies the basics pleasantly. The locking lobby door is a plus, since quite a few people live on the streets in Union Square, and the green cleaning products and fluorescent bulbs will make the environmentally sensitive traveler happy.

Room Tip: Rooms may vary in noise level, since some part of the building seems to be used by students; ask for...

“Good value, comfy room, perfect location - with some noise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

We stayed in this hotel for a weeklong vacation, and we were quite satisfied with it.
Our room was on the 6th floor, a nicely decorated (we loved the brick backwall), spacious-enough bedroom with a clean bathroom.
The real surprise was the decent and quiet heater which was really useful during those cold November nights.
Since our window opened to Powell Street it is no surprise that there was some noise from the cable-car bells and the traffic, but it wasn't so bad at this 6th floor level.
Some negative remarks must be done as well, eg. the room could be taken only at 3 pm, while check-out time is at 11 am - if we wanted to stay until 12 pm, it would have cost an extra 20USD...
Considering the price and the location, this is a very nice value as a budget/mid-range hotel.
