I read about this hotel in a gushing review in Australia. On the plus side, the hotel was quaint, the bed was extremely comfortable, it was quiet, the windows open (a big plus for me) and the room was small but charming. The bar staff were friendly and warm. On the negative side, certain other staff were more concerned with how they looked than how they served. First time I've ever encountered arrogant, rude service in the USA. The front desk was cold and unfriendly, the restaurant hostess was restless and disinterested (I had to provide the solutions to her as to how she could fit me in to her busy schedule. In the entire 2 hours I dined there, the restaurant never went to more than 50% full). When I checked out, they explained they couldn't get a cab for me, as the girl on reception said she didn't know how. This hotel will suit those looking for a super-cool (try frigid), fashionable place to hang out and be seen.

Room tip: I had a room on 8th floor looking out to the side. Quiet, and the windows open.

Dear jjj047,

We thank you for choosing the Marlton on your recent stay in NYC. We apologize that you experienced anything less than excellent service and rest assured we have followed up with both our restaurant and front desk staff to ensure your next experience is a more positive one. We are happy to hear that you appreciated our bar staff and the overall aesthetics of our property and we will certainly do our best to ensure our improved service marries the aspects that you do enjoy about the Marlton. We hope to see you again soon!

Hotel has euro feel. Rooms are small yet still charming...bath tiny. Continental Breakfast included...quality Greek yogurt, berries, granola, coffee....great service in the dining room not so much at the front desk, although the doorman was excellent. We planned on dinner there for at least one evening...The menu just didn't appeal to me. There are no amenities, basically a good place to stay in a wonderful location. They also have a bar as well as a coffee type cafe that seems extremely popular. It has wonderful teas , coffee and such. Free wifi as well in the cafe that has some communal tables, small tables, and another portion with a fireplace...makes for a cozy atmosphere especially on a cold day. Personally this hotel works for me if I will be in the city for only a few days...any longer I would need more space in a room.

We loved the room which, as expected for this city, was not overly big but we had a view to the rear of NYC apartments but a lot less noise than a front view would provide. But the room had all we needed except anything to sit on. Actually, to be honest it had one of those wee Chinese pottery barrels - quite useless but decorative- while, as I mentioned as we checked out, it could have been replaced by a small chair or even two. That apart, we liked this very much. The wardrobe had lots of hangers (lots of brownie points for that) and plenty space for clothes and small bags. The en suite was compact and yet the smallness only intruded at the sink squeezed against the wall. Just enough shelf space too and the most forceful water pressure in the big shower. Room under the bed too for cases. Huge TV screen.
The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed we have experienced. Great pillows and even one down filled. Bliss. Odd ceiling lights but that's part of the chosen decor throughout.
Breakfast was in the Margaux restaurant though we chose to sit in the light extension. Continental is included though of very limited choice and the menu points out that substitutions would be politely declined. Other cooked dishes were generally good and reasonably priced.
Service in all areas was friendly and informal but efficient. One day however our room was not made up till nearly 4pm.
The lobby has a coffee bar and extends into a pleasant cocktail bar (excellent bar people and waiting staff) that opens into the restaurant. It attracts, like grand hotels if yesteryear, a lot if visitors but not of the grand dame style: today's lounge lizards are young, hippish and glued to laptop and iPhone screens even as they carry on business, gossip, chatter, health revelations and the like. Even in the restaurant screens are perused avidly and constantly no matter who the companion is. And it gets busy at certain times with the bar popular in the evenings. It has a buzz and mostly not unpleasant even to us if a certain age.

Room tip: One at the back will have no worse a view but no street noise.

Rooms are small but perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable. Very attentive staff with a great deal of information about things to do and see in the neighborhood.

Quiet for NYC with breakfast and tea and coffee all day included in the room rate. Very good WIFI. Crowded bar was very festive; restaurant food good with excellent service, but a bit pricey and there are lots of good restaurant choices.

One block to the subway.

It's great fun to stay in an NYC hotel once in awhile even though I live nearby in New Jersey and on the Upper East Side. A lady from Seattle recommended this hotel, and her experience was the same as mine.

The location is really good on 8th Street between 5 and 6 Avenue. The room I hade was small and there was no space for other furniture but the bed. Bathrooms though are relatively large. Good bedcomfort and pretty quiet to be on Manhattan.
I had the oppurtunity to try the restaurant. A little bit overprized if you ask me. Service execllent though. The bar is nice and crowded.
The wifi is good.
