“If you don't want the ordinary chain-hotel, stay at Blue Moon Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

person found this review helpful

The reviews of Blue Moon Hotel are right, this is not an ordinary hotel. Nowhere the colour beige is found. Whether you find the colour scheme refreshing or not, it is something out of the ordinary. But I'm sure that this is not restoration, rather a hurried painting by a colourblind. The rooms are spacious, the beds are nice. Carpets could be cleaner, though. And we missed heating in the toilet. the neighborhood is interesting, lots of nice places to eat and drink. Visit the thai restaurant Sticky Rice also on Orchard Street, tast and cheap food and a good vibe. All in all a nice place to stay - we will love to come back. Next time I hope we will be offered the wine mentioned in the reviews!

Room Tip: Try to get as high as possible - there you will find nice views.

“Beautiful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

This is a funky boutique hotel. It has reclaimed furniture and architectural features all lovingly restored. Art decorates everything. Our bedroom was large (it had a sofa and writing table - as well as a king size bed), comfortable and extremely well appointed. The breakfast area in the lobby served fresh bagels and coffee and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend for singles/couples and would love to go back there next time we're in NYC.

Your kind recognition of all our restorative and artistic efforts is deeply appreciated. We fretted over every detail. Although authentic in historical accuracy, our furniture is not reclaimed; it is period-appropriate with custom fabrics and details. The entire project is a case study in preservation. Commitment and fastidious attention to detail transformed a five-story tenement into a stately eight-story hotel and have earned us the recognition of National Geographic Traveler and 100 Best Little Hotels, as well as 30 major articles. Mosaics found in a central vestibule are reconfigured and placed strategically throughout the lobby. Banister spindles and newel posts are incorporated into our front desk, bars, lobby furniture, and the bar sinks located in each and every room. Each room contains historical memorabilia in frames we created from moldings and window shutters. All the moldings and wainscoting found in the building were brought down to a hand finish and reincorporated in the design of the lobby and rooms.

From our spacious accommodations to the artifacts and historical collages lovingly displayed throughout the hotel, to our complimentary breakfast featuring delectable choices from the neighborhood, we hope to create a memorable and unique experience that will inspire a guest to return. Knowing that you would love to come back to our boutique hotel is a compliment that is truly appreciated. Our Lower East Side location is ideal for visitors to explore and enjoy a New York City and we hope that our staff was able to direct you to all of the NYC attractions located close by, which include many shops, galleries and lounges. Thank you for your kind review and recommendation. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back for another beautiful experience at the Blue Moon Hotel in NYC.

“Quirky, great art on in reception, friendly welcome.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Great desk clerk; she was helpful, real and funny. Realised we were in a rush and sorted out travel directions to our comedy show. Room was large and well stocked but we spent very little time inside. Would have liked to stay longer. Downside was our room (John Garfield) was a bit too orange but bed was super comfy. Old pipes meant shower was noisy but we came away feeling we'd had a good 24hrs in NYC. Most definitely helped by our last minute choice of a cool, but service driven hotel. Recommend it.

Room Tip: Rooms all vary and are named after actors.

We are delighted that our helpful and convivial staff could help make your NYC trip so enjoyable! Our cozy, yet spacious suites are uniquely designed with all of the luxurious amenities to make our guests feel right at home. Regarding the pipes, all the infrastructure is new. The project’s distinction is that we gutted a 5-storey tenement and gave it a second life as a stately 8-storey hotel. We are flattered that the integration of the artifacts was so tastefully done as to make it hard to distinguish between the original edifice and the rejuvenated one.

The color in each room varies in that we mixed our own oil pigment. The base is overlaid with scumbling and gentle glazes provided by distinctive brushwork. It was not our intention to mimic a flat, monochromatic, industrial-chic style. Our goal was to reflect upon the harmony of color, creating an atmosphere to soothe “the soul by means of the senses” (Oscar Wilde) in a painterly style borrowed from the layering techniques of Renaissance artists. All rooms are meant to complement the original woodwork, which was scraped and stripped by hand using a heat-gun, sandpaper and other devices, in order to bring it down to a natural, hand-finish. The colors are not overly subdued in that they are meant to contrast and complement the large expanse of woodwork and earth tones, which is the general palette of the Blue Moon Hotel. Rest assured: as we fret over our responses, so did we fret over every detail in creating the Blue Moon Hotel and making your stay a most enjoyable one.

Thank you for choosing the Blue Moon Hotel for your NYC getaway. We appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back in the future to experience all of the treasures and historic memorabilia that make the Blue Moon Hotel in NYC a truly one-of-a-kind experience! See you on your next trip home.

“Great place for a leisurely or romantic trip to NYC”

We've stayed here a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The rooms are great and quite big. The staff is always friendly and the bagels in the morning were top notch.
The location is interesting; not much right near there, but a subway stop is a few blocks away and can get you anywhere.

Room Tip: Check out the descriptions on the web site, which are accurate and helpful.

“Good Location”

This is a nice Hotel in the Heart of the Lower East Side.. The building is an original tenement building that has been redone in a very retro way. We stayed in the Tommy Dorsey Room which had a small balcony that overlooked the Williamsburg bridge. Clean , close to Soho , shopping, nightlife. If you want to stay in authentic New York, Not times square, then stay here.
