I agree with everything in the positive reviews about this hotel. It is charming and in no way "tired" that I could see. We loved the breakfast (the fruit salad was full of fresh blueberries - not just the cheaper fruit) and evening wine and cheese (the best crackers I ever had and beautiful service). We really only had to worry about a light lunch since we were not focused on dining on this trip. After the theatre, we would pick up cookies, fruit and tea and bring it to our room.
The location was terrific. We walked just about every where - 10 min to Central Park, 20 to 30 minutes to most of the theatres, a few minutes from the MoMa. Therefore, this hotel was a great money and time saver for us. You can easily spend hundreds on food and taxis in this city.
Our negatives for this hotel are minor but I thought we should mention: the bathroom had no fan we could turn on so it stayed fairly moist in there. The elevator is slow and seems to have a mind of its own. We had no view at the 12th floor so I would suggest a low floor so you can take the stairs more easily (it was really quiet there, though). I was surprised the hotel does not give you the option of re-using towels as most places do now. We were careful to hang ours up but they were changed every day anyways. We were pleased to see that newspapers were provided to be shared by all in the lounge/breakfast room, rather than dropping one at every door each morning.
We all only had small suitcases on wheels and I must say I didn't appreciate the porter who took off with our suitcases before we got out of the taxi and again at checkout the second we let go of the handle and turned our backs. The rest of the staff was very polite and, maybe some people think this is okay, but to me it's just plain rude not to ASK FIRST if you require assistance and graciously step back if the answer is "no thank you".
