We stayed at The Lucerne for 12 days from end December 2011 through to the second week of January 2012. Apart from an initial disappointment that our room was on the 5th floor, and not higher (as had been promised during long phone conversations when making the booking), our stay here was first class. The lower room wasn't a problem. We were concerned about noise - the room looked on to Amsterdam, but it wasn't much of an issue.
As we were in NYC to get married, we'd booked a King Suite, which no doubt added to the comfort of the stay. I did get to see inside a regular room on one occasion, I'd have to agree with other reviewers, that this type of room seemed quite small. But then again, this is New York and you don't get big hotel rooms without paying a premium.
Our suite was plushly furnished; the bed was extremely comfortable; the quality of the supplied toiletries was above average; and small touches such as the coffee-maker (the type that takes coffee capsules) added to the enjoyment of the stay. Housekeeping was uniformly good and left nothing to be desired.
I'd like to make special mention of John, one of the front desk managers, and Ron, the concierge. Both of them added the personal touches that make a hotel stay memorable - the things that make you feel you're at home. I was also surprised that there was no charge for printing documents, which was a nice touch.
In addition to the accommodation comfort offered by The Lucerne, the hotel is very well located, being on West 79th, between Amsterdam and Broadway. With the West 79th Street subway within a few minute's walk, it's easy to get downtown, especially to the theaters and city centre.
We look forward to returning to NYC later this year, and will definitely return to The Lucerne.
