“Loved the challenges more than the spa. Great place. Life changing.”

Okay, I loved Miraval. My boyfriend (who paid for the majority of the bill) was not as fond, but I think that had something to do with the cost. He also did not love the weather (we went off season so it was actually humid--in AZ--and there was a bit of rainfall.Other days it was super hot. I did not mind and actually felt it added to the jungle-esque feel of Miraval). I put on here we went in August, and I think that is about right but cannot remember the precise date. Anyway, interestingly, I did not love the spa here. The Sonoma Mission Inn (Fairmont) is better. First, you cannot really have a couple's experience bc it is about "I" (you as one person), so they don't emphasize couples. One reason I love to go to spas is to share in pampering with my loved one, so that part I did not appreciate. More importantly, I was not wowed by the actual treatments. I think you have to know who the best employees are and then make a reservation (I was clueless and ended up with the same girl 2 days in a row, and she was not very good at either treatment). Miraval used to be affiliated with a drug and alcohol rehab center, and you can definitely feel the "self help" vibe. Honestly, I truly think this was the best part (other than its impact on the couple's vibe--or lack thereof--of the spa). It was actually like therapy for me. Like I said, the spa treatments were forgettable. I did the hot stone (OMG, if you have dry eyes do NOT wear your contacts!)-meh. An athletic massage (this may have been the best) and one of the outdoor exfoliating treatments...cannot recall what else I did, but I guess that tells you something about how unimpressed I was. Boyfriend did the thai massage and I think that is good for men and those who are not flexible and need a good stretch. The exfoliator made me break out horribly (he put it on my face even though it was a body treatment). However, the fitness aspect of the spa is great. The abs class was INSANE, so definitely try it. My abs have never been so sore. And the gym is amazing. The yoga class was a joke. Horrible. I may be spoiled bc my boyfriend owns a popular yoga studio, but still. Even the instructor seemed bored. BUT, the other class made up for it. And the energy is so positive. Everyone is smiling all of the time. And then the challenges: you must do these. Go outside of your comfort zone! I HATE heights, so I did the T high wire thing that you do as a couple. It is called "Y not." DO IT! It totally tells you about your relationship bc it is teamwork (or not!). I also learned I am way braver than I thought, and it was a total self esteem builder (I did not fall and my big strong bf did bc he began shaking as soon as he got up there!). I also HATE roller coasters and any sort of swinging motion, so I did that let go exercise (Oprah did it) where they make you go high and then let you go. I just closed my eyes, and I ended up going upside down and doing acrobatic stuff bc I felt so brave. Oh, and the horse experience is just insanely amazing. Truly life changing. I ate like a pig bc the portions are small (so you order like 3 pizzas and feel like you overate even though you ate a "normal" American portion), but I did not gain weight. I paid way too much for alcohol and should have just abstained. They gave me a $20 margarita without alcohol so I made them actually put some tequila in it. Jeesh. Save your money and make it a non alcohol experience. Anyway, I would love to return but doubt my boyfriend will put up the cash. Go if you can!

Thank you for writing! It sounds like it's been almost a year since you visited with your boyfriend which means it's most definitely time to come back to Miraval with the girls! =) Interestingly, we have seen a significant increase in couples traveling to Miraval in the past year and many people do like to visit with their spouses or partners as Miraval is a place not only to reconnect with oneself but to reconnect to others. I'm sorry to hear that our spa didn't live up to your expectations - in the last year, we have added many new treatments (i.e. Qi Journey, TAIZ Sensorium, Flourish Organic Body Scrub, etc.) to our menu incorporating more treatments with all natural products and also fusion services combining multiple modalities. We always strive to meet guest requests and remain a trendsetter in the spa world. So glad that you went out of your comfort zone and tried Why High and Swing and a Prayer during your visit. Both are great challenges. It's also great to hear that the Equine Experience was life-changing for you. It is a program that has been a signature Miraval experience for more than 15 years. Thanks again for posting. Hope to see you back at Miraval soon!

“The magic of Miraval”

This was my second trip back to Miraval and I was hopeful that this trip would have as great an impact as my first and it did. I have come away transformed and am re-entering the "real" world a more mindful person. From the minute you enter the resort there is a peacefulness that permeates everything. Birds, the sound of waterfalls and the smiles on staffers are everywhere. I LOVE the options at Miraval. You can participate in high-energy activities throughout the day or meditate, do yoga and partake in spa treatments-the choice is yours. The knowledge of the staff is impressive ....was so impressed with MaryGrace, the meditation/yoga teacher ....equine experience: walked away learning a great deal about myself. Out on a Limb: was a life changer for me. Any of the challenge activities will truly open your eyes to how you approach other things and people in your life.

I come away from Miraval relaxed, refreshed, lighter in body and spirit AND with a new arsenal of tools to help me truly navigate stress better in my own life. How many "spas" offer you all of that in one package? Yay Miraval!

A piece of advice: try to go during the week. It definitely gets more crowded around Friday which can slightly damper the peaceful atmosphere

Wow. Thank you for writing such beautiful words. I'm thrilled to hear that your return visit was just as refreshing and energizing as your first. It sounds like you tried a little bit of everything while you were here - Yoga, Equine Experience, Out on a Limb, etc. I'll make sure that MaryGrace is aware of your "shout out" as I'm sure she'll be thrilled to hear that she had such an impact on your stay. Also, it's interesting that you suggest for people to visit mid-week as we are launching a new promotion later this week called "Mid-Week Sneak Away" encouraging people to do exactly that! Hope to see you on your next visit!

“Excellent, but not cheap”

Beautiful view, silent, relaxing. Expensive, in terms of quality price ratio.

Room Tip: Try to get rooms with a direct view to Catalina.

Thank you for writing. I'm glad you enjoyed the beautiful views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. To your point about Miraval being too pricey, I can tell you that we have done and continue to do extensive research into the rates of our competitors. We continually show that Miraval rates are often lower and include more programming, resort credits, and amenities as part of the all-inclusive experience. We also offer promotional packages throughout the year with some great special offers such as 5th Night Free. The next time you need a relaxing getaway, I hope to see you back at Miraval!

“One of the most extraordinary experiences you can give yourself”

I was gifted 5 days at Miraval for my 60th birthday. It is truly a mind, body, spirit experience. The staff bends over backwards to make your stay perfect. I was truly taken care of. The first morning I met the group to hike and realized I forgot my sunglasses and sun tan lotion. The staff person said "not to worry, we have extras." That was a metaphor for the trip.

The beds are so comfortable you never want to get out of them. It is like sleeping in a cloud. I had the best stone massage I ever had in my life. The meditations, yoga classes and breating classes were excellent. And we had zen boot camp too which was fabulous!

The equine course is the best. A don't miss.

The food was perfect. Everything was prepared beautifully and you could either eat from the buffet or order a la carte but everything was delicious. You could even get a drink if you wanted one :).

The challenge course and rock climbing were also fantastic.

I can't say enough about Miraval. It is the perfect spa.

Thank you for sharing. And happy belated birthday! Your story about forgetting sunglasses and sunscreen for the hike is great to hear because we try and anticipate our guests' needs and your story is a great example of how we do that. Glad you enjoyed the Hot Stone Massage. Many people don't know that the Hot Stone Massage originated at Miraval before it became an industry-wide phenomenon. It's great to hear that you were able to try so many different types of classes from yoga to fitness to the challenge course while you were here. We look forward to having you back again soon! Maybe for your 61st?
