Okay, I loved Miraval. My boyfriend (who paid for the majority of the bill) was not as fond, but I think that had something to do with the cost. He also did not love the weather (we went off season so it was actually humid--in AZ--and there was a bit of rainfall.Other days it was super hot. I did not mind and actually felt it added to the jungle-esque feel of Miraval). I put on here we went in August, and I think that is about right but cannot remember the precise date. Anyway, interestingly, I did not love the spa here. The Sonoma Mission Inn (Fairmont) is better. First, you cannot really have a couple's experience bc it is about "I" (you as one person), so they don't emphasize couples. One reason I love to go to spas is to share in pampering with my loved one, so that part I did not appreciate. More importantly, I was not wowed by the actual treatments. I think you have to know who the best employees are and then make a reservation (I was clueless and ended up with the same girl 2 days in a row, and she was not very good at either treatment). Miraval used to be affiliated with a drug and alcohol rehab center, and you can definitely feel the "self help" vibe. Honestly, I truly think this was the best part (other than its impact on the couple's vibe--or lack thereof--of the spa). It was actually like therapy for me. Like I said, the spa treatments were forgettable. I did the hot stone (OMG, if you have dry eyes do NOT wear your contacts!)-meh. An athletic massage (this may have been the best) and one of the outdoor exfoliating treatments...cannot recall what else I did, but I guess that tells you something about how unimpressed I was. Boyfriend did the thai massage and I think that is good for men and those who are not flexible and need a good stretch. The exfoliator made me break out horribly (he put it on my face even though it was a body treatment). However, the fitness aspect of the spa is great. The abs class was INSANE, so definitely try it. My abs have never been so sore. And the gym is amazing. The yoga class was a joke. Horrible. I may be spoiled bc my boyfriend owns a popular yoga studio, but still. Even the instructor seemed bored. BUT, the other class made up for it. And the energy is so positive. Everyone is smiling all of the time. And then the challenges: you must do these. Go outside of your comfort zone! I HATE heights, so I did the T high wire thing that you do as a couple. It is called "Y not." DO IT! It totally tells you about your relationship bc it is teamwork (or not!). I also learned I am way braver than I thought, and it was a total self esteem builder (I did not fall and my big strong bf did bc he began shaking as soon as he got up there!). I also HATE roller coasters and any sort of swinging motion, so I did that let go exercise (Oprah did it) where they make you go high and then let you go. I just closed my eyes, and I ended up going upside down and doing acrobatic stuff bc I felt so brave. Oh, and the horse experience is just insanely amazing. Truly life changing. I ate like a pig bc the portions are small (so you order like 3 pizzas and feel like you overate even though you ate a "normal" American portion), but I did not gain weight. I paid way too much for alcohol and should have just abstained. They gave me a $20 margarita without alcohol so I made them actually put some tequila in it. Jeesh. Save your money and make it a non alcohol experience. Anyway, I would love to return but doubt my boyfriend will put up the cash. Go if you can!
