Having spent several days at the Wyndham Rio Mar and several days at el Conquistador I feel I can offer insight. I'll keep this short and sweet. Don't stay at Elconqistador I repeat Do Not stay at Elconqistador. The Wyndham was a wonderful experience, the staff are trained in the details and it shows. The Wyndham has an amazing pool area and a beach and it's location is perfect for hitting old Sanjuan and Fajardo. Everything is laid out nice and its staff are well groomed and neat.
I had heard so many great things about El conquistador that I had to check it out. Nothing but a disappointment. the Cons: My room looks weathered and beat up. Mold in the pictures frames. Mold on top of the shower tile, TV batteries and lights didn't work, TV is small, the room could use a painting. The layout of this hotel requires walking and lots of it. Palomino island is overcrowded, and only has a small strip of nice sand that everyone competes for. Even Palomino island needs a rest from all the traffic. I felt I was at Jones Beach or Robert Moses on the weekend. The Dining options are way overpriced. The Pros: Beautiful view.
My advise at $300 per night (el conquistador) I wanted to go back to the Wyndham Rio Mar. It's too bad pictures can't be uploaded or I would have uploaded them.

the hotel itself was pretty good - room was clean and spacious with free WIFI. The jacuzzi was fantastic, had it all to ourselves in the morning after breakfast - with fantastic view of the ocean & islands. Towels were provided at the pool also.

major gripe was the "private island" wasn't private - locals on catamarans practically docked on the beach to the left of the pier, which meant the left hand side was practically occupied by them as you could smell the fuel if you tried going for a dip & the boats were so close to the shore that there was no swimming room. Which is a shame as the left side of the beach had much nicer water (could see fish swimming) than the right which was quite murky and filled with dead coral. Also, i thought this could pose a security issue so don't bring your valuables!

Also parking was a rip off at $15/night and was far from the hotel although a shuttle bus exists.

It is great to hear about the pleasant stay you recently had at El Conquistador. We appreciate you choosing to stay at the resort and for taking time to provide feedback. It response to your concerns about the island, the island is very safe and secure. We certainly provide and care for a safe environment for our guests. As a note, all beach access is public in Puerto Rico, so yes, parts of the beaches at Palomino can be accessed by Locals via private boats. But the Island is private in the sense that the access to the rest of the island is restricted to resort guests only. Thank you again for staying at the resort and we look forward to your return visit.

This is a good place that has everything! A pier, a private island with jet skiing, hiking and beach, a water park, restaurants, golf, small shops and a gigantic pool. The water park is extra but it looked good for kids. The island is awesome. There is a fairy that takes you to the island and depart every 30 min or so. The views were breath taking from our room. The food, however, is over priced. They have a good concierge with a bunch of tours to El Yunque, fishing, Biobay etc. Wifi was available in most parts of the hotel, but not in some.

Room tip: We had a room on the top floor of the East wing. It had a view of the BioBay. I think anything on the other side would have been better. Rooms on the lower Marinetime level probably do not have the same views as the top level rooms.

We had an ocean view room with breathtaking views which i highly recommend. The grounds were very well maintained and the pools were beautiful. My favorite was the sushi restaurant on site sooo delicious! The only thing that's a little wacky is the cable car elevator thingy you have to take to access some parts of the resort. The private beach island was amazing. We went every day instead of the pool! Also the water slides were so fun haha even though I'm too old for that :)

The view from this property is stunning. We were there when occupancy was low, so we had many things to ourselves. I would not want to be here when it is crowded. The service was inconsistent, though the people were friendly and helpful. The grounds are truly beautifully kept but the overall facility needs some updating. The inside areas are very dark and freezing cold, totally unnecessary. We found most of the dining options unappealing and went off campus for our dinners. It seems in a location like this, there should be more outdoor dining options. Going to the beach on the boat was fun and the beach area is beautiful with many places to enjoy both sun and shade. We also enjoyed the pool area with all the hot tubs and plentiful towels, as well as the lovely sculptures throughout.

Room tip: The sea view is worth it. We really enjoyed it, day and night and even in the pouring rain.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your comments after another wonderful stay at El Conquistador Resort. We understand your concerns with some of the dining options at the resort. I can pass on that we are constantly innovating new ways to increase value for price paid and for elevating the guest experience while dining at the resort. It is a challenge that we are never completely satisfied with. Once again, thank you for staying with us and hope you'll return very soon.
