We spent a brief sojourn at this small resort. It is situated in a remote area of the Izu Peninsula, on the shores of a rushing mountain river, surrounded by steep, heavily wooded slopes. The most outstanding feature of this establishment are rooms that combine zen-like simplicity with tasteful appointments. Each room has its own private outside hot soaking tub. If you enjoy the Japanese style of hot springs, this is a great place to relax in supreme comfort. And you will do so several times a day, as the options for other activities are limited. The concierge provided us with a map of a few trails, these were enjoyable but short. Service at Arcana Izu is outstanding, highly professional and observant. The food is French-oriented with Japanese accents. We found it interesting, well prepared but not great and with an unfortunate, irritating pretentiousness. It was significantly overpriced. The pricing was further exaggerated on the wine list, which was off the charts, even by Japanese standards.
If stylish, private relaxation in hot water is what you have on mind, Arcana Izu can be recommended. If you expect a more diverse and rounded experience, you will probably be disappointed.

I saw an article on in-flight magazine about experiencing a unique combination of traditional style hospitality and modern design at Japanese inns. One picture on the page showed Arcana Izu and this picture sold me the idea to stay for two nights in this inn upon arriving in Tokyo.

This inn is about seven years old. I have been told that, when the economy was slowing down, the original traditional inn by the Kano River was sold and replaced by this modern cluster of concrete, wooden slats and black painted steel. Later, as I walked along the roads by the river, I could see that there were many other inns abandoned and neglected. I also saw many other operating traditional inns to choose from at the same area.

Arcana Izu is about minimalist experience in a backdrop of quiet green forest and the sound of running river. The surrounding roads and places can be visited within three hours of walking that I did on the first afternoon, but there are more to see beyond these roads. I was planning to explore the area by riding a bicycle on the next day but it was raining until three in the afternoon. Instead I borrowed some picture books from the library shelf, the captivating forest views through windows as well as three easy listening jazz CDs that came with the guestroom kept me indoor.

At the dining room Lumiere, the centerpiece is a long wooden counter facing this huge window with the night view of a hundred year old ‘kusunoki’ tree, where dinner was served. There were six chefs preparing eight courses dinner behind this counter as well as three sommeliers looking after six guests with our drinks. I think the special experience was about the ritual of being served by these attentive charming staffs, and the beauty of how morsels of home grown vegetables, mushrooms, nuts, herbs, all local produce cooked and laid out with care on black slates or white plates as well as the quietness of night outside around this ‘kusunoki’ tree.

The breakfasts were as delicious and interesting as the dinners which were different on each day. The combination of small cup of vegetable soup, grilled fish cut + vegetable morsels, plain omelet + ratatouilles served with thick slab of French toasts and cut fresh fruits + berries + chilled banana smoothies were just great and satisfying for me.

I think that the two nights experience at Arcana Izu will be good change for anybody who comes from a city like Hong Kong, New York or Tokyo. It is about quietness of nature, spending intimate time with your company within your own open private onsen with captivating backdrop of quiet green forest and being taken care by attentive staffs at this inn.

Room tip: I think the river view suite is good for more 'private' traveller as the onsen slate tub is open but recessed within the structure although there is nobody in the forest at all.

My husband thought the place was great, but overall, I felt that it was a bit overpriced. There is no main building and the lobby for this hotel, you will be directed to your room once you arrive to their car valet. It gives me that all these are for cost reduction purpose and I felt a bit surprised. The hotel is quite close to the residential area - and my expectation got lower when we approached the hotel, however, all the rooms are facing the river right next to the hotel and I actually got the very secluded feeling. The room was like a city hotel, long and narrow without much space - but was modern, clean, and comfortable enough. We were able to see a shooting star from our outside bath which was really nice.

The only thing about this place is that their top attraction is their food - but I did not really feel that their food was that great. I live in central tokyo and get great food once I walk out of my house. The organic veggies in their private farm is just normal these days. The taste was good of course, but was nothing special - the portion was small (and I do not eat that much). They did not have enough inventory for some of the wines we wanted to order. They call themselves auberge, but the sommelier gives me the feeling that he was not experienced enough.

For amount of investments they put in their facilities and services, it was overpriced. Good if you are tired of the normal ryokans.

It was a pleasant 2 hour drive from Tokyo. Along the way, you get to view Mt.Fuji from the expressway. The moment you pull into the Arcana driveway, someone is there to welcome you. They took our luggages and valet our car for us. Immediately, they bring you to your rooms, and all the check in process will be made inside your room. We booked 2 river terrace rooms with the clear view of the gorge below us. It was an amazing retreat. Soaking in your own private rotenburo on the balcony of your room, you can enjoy the view of the white waters of the river and the greenery surrounding the hotel. Occasionally, you even see hawks swooping down from above. It was a majestic sight. When you check in, they would ask you when you will prefer your dinner. The inclusive dinner is French style. I have to say that it is extravagant, but it took away 3 hours of our precious time to enjoy the room and the private outdoor bath. By the 4th course, we were already full because of the intervals between each courses. We were so glad that we got our desserts because we can go rest within the comfort of our rooms. Breakfast the following morning is excellent, but I secretly wish for a more rustic and simple style breakfast. It was like reliving the dinner experience from the previous night. Warning: VERY EXPENSIVE!

A piece of paradise only 2 hours from Tokyo. This is a 5 star hotel with 5 star prices but worth every bit of it - cannot fault it - beautiful setting - modern but super stylish, private onsen on the terrace outside the room, michelin star quality food, amazing and charming service. Treat yourself!

Room tip: I had room 9 - outlook is just sublime but I think most rooms have similar views.
