“Good for Birding”

Tendaba would not be a camp of choice to stay in - that is if you had a choice! If you want to go birdwatching up river, and want to take boat trips into the mangroves, then Tendaba is your only real choice. The food is okay, the older rooms are very run down. If you are looking for a single room then ask to stay in the "new block". There are some air-conditioned riverside rooms as well now. The pool is actually okay. The staff in the dining room are very welcoming. They have gone mad with expanding the number of rooms, where they should have spent money on refurbishing the old ones (or knocking them down and building new ones). They even seem to be making inroads into controlling the mosquitoes.

“Tendaba camp in The Gambia”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

Like others, we can cope with "clean and basic" but the condition of the rooms and site is quite shabby. Although one has to remember that this is Africa and Tendaba is the best accommodation in the area, a coat of paint in the rooms, work and lighting on the paths, and new pillows, bed linen and towels would go a long way towards making this camp a better experience. The plumbing and electrics also need attention. The food was perfectly edible (if a little bland and repetitive at times) and we were not ill. The situation beside the river is lovely, the boat trip through the mangroves was well worthwhile and we were not too bothered by mosquitoes.

“Relaxing end to a roughing it trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2011

We stayed in June 2009.

We spent one week in luxury in the west coast and spent the second week 4 x 4 travelling and sleeping rough. When we arrived at tendaba camp it was a luxury end to our rough and tough second week. It is nothing like the western idea of 5* luxury, the private rooms are basic with a basic shower and toilet and sink- but like I said compared to everything else in the undeveloped eastern side of gambia, Tendaba Camp is great.

The food was satisfactory but the location is amazing. Next to the wide gambia river, we stayed in a room with 'sea view' ie views of the river. We stayed for 2 nights as a break to end our travelling trip. There is not much to do in the villages outside the camp, it is very rural, however the camp do offer excursions. We went on a half day fishing trip in the morning, unfortunately didn't catch anything but it was an experience all right!! lol small dated boats and a long piece of string with bait at the end for a fishing rod! haha it was great fun and both me and my husband love rustic and rural things like this. Really enjoyed it. We saw a lot of beautiful birdlife, take your binoculars if that's your kind of thing.

We went in june when it's not the peak season so the camp was dead, which we liked, however this meant it wasn't kept up to high standards like the pool was dirty and not cleaned so we couldn't use it.

Definitely THE place to stay if you are travelling around this side of gambia.

Room Tip: Get the room with 'sea view', don't order curry chicken!

“Bit grubby and past its best”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2011

Rooms not especially clean and we had to push to get moved to a room where the shower worked. Restaurant ok, nothing special. However, great location on the banks of the river.

“After a few doubles seemed 1/2 OK”

Well jaw dropping to say the least! what a shame this i expect was once a nice place but it has fallen into a sorry state of dis-repair.We refused the VIP rooms offered and refused to pay more for the slightly better riverside rooms though a little better they were dirty we had to ask for a fan but were expected to tip for that.We put something on top of the bed and slept on that. The pool was green and slimey but the birds enjoyed the insects on the surface. We did eat the food but out of choice would not have done as every thing was so dirty. The trip through the mangroves was wonderful and we saw crocodile which made the stay bearable.as did the alcohol. We did not stay on the way back down river as planned but returned by road to the coast as to avoid it.

Room Tip: Ask for riverside it would once of been beautiful!
