The weather in Matera is reasonably comfortable year-round, but the city does experiences four, distinct season changes.  Although it can be visited throughout the year, certain months can be more suitable for outdoor activities than others.   

            The summer time is the busy tourism season in Matera . On average, the hottest months of the year are July and August, during which time the daily high temperatures will generally reach the upper 80’s and lower 90’s.  The nighttime temperatures during these months will generally drop to the mid to lower 60’s. 

            Winters are generally mild in Matera , but there are times when the temperatures will drop to below freezing.  The coldest months of the year on average are January and February, during which time the daily high temperatures will reach the low to mid 50’s.  The nighttime temperatures during these months will generally drop to the mid to upper 30’s.

            The warm-weather summer months are also the least rainy of the year.  On average, the time from October through March is the wet season, while the time from April through September is the dry season.
