About
Mirissa is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, especially for the most famous and largest marine mammal, the "Blue Whale." Actually, it takes only six to nine nautical miles from Mirissa Harbor to reach whale habitats. We have been operating whale-watching tours for the last seven years, and through our experience Our whale-watching tours start from Mirissa harbor, and most of the time whales can be seen very close to the Mirissa coast. Some days it takes several hours as they swim away for food in the deep sea. During our journey to see blue whales, we can also see several other whale species, dolphins, and other marine life. Killer whales, sperm whales, and Bride whales are the different kinds of whales we can see. Spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and Riso dolphins are the various dolphin types. Also, green-back turtles, whale sharks, Flying fish, and Tuna fish are other marine species that can be seen on some days.

      Only cruise I would do.
The boat was great. The people were amazing. The captain really does care for whales and this is his passion. From all the ships we saw this is the only would I go on. The service was brilliant and when we saw another whale on the return, despite it taking more time we went and cruised with it while everyone else went to shore. We saw a blue whale, fin whale and lots of dolphins.

Pay a bit more for WWC... Worth it!
My advice: pay the extra 20-ish% to go with WWC. Why?... Space! There's space to roam and get a railing when there's a sighting. You're out there for 4-5 hours, you'll want to be comfortable. Most of the other big boats were literally leaning over with all the passengers. Crew! They do really look after all the passengers. They gave my kids particular attention and I appreciated that. What's offered. Sure if you net out the cost difference it easily would cover the additional stuff you get (fruit, breakfast, roti) but you don't feel like this operation is cutting corners. They're just asking for a reasonable price/profit and delivering really good service. Thanks Manoj and Crew!!!🎉👍

Greatest whale watching tour in Mirissa
Day started early at 6.15 but we were fist ones out. Captain and the grew were really professional. They were able to find fist dolphins with half an hour. They recognizeed smallest signs on the water to locate whales and other wildlife. Also captain explained passengers what they were looking at the see and what they were doing. At some points we were waiting for some time but captain explained all the reasons why we had to do so. We managed do see dolphins and turtles several times. Highlight of the day wss that we managed so see finwhale twice within 100m of the boat and once about 500m away. Most definitely we got the best view of the day compared to other boats because of the professional grew. Also there group size was nice and small and not too overcrowded.

      Awesome morning !
Difficult to choose the right boat because of the large number of companies but WWC was for sure THE one to go with ! We were welcomed on board with a nice cup of tea, sandwiches and banana. Due to the rough ocean conditions at the beginning, some passengers were sick but the crew was super fast to react. We were lucky to see a large number of dolphins and tunas, a turtle and finally, the whale-shark ! Amazing Captain with a huge enthusiasm supported by a top crew team. Thanks to all of you for making this morning one of the highlights of our trip in Sri Lanka. Cedric & Sophie

      Fun and ethical tour!
We had a great time! We really appreciated how the team was very respectful towards the animals. Other boats were speeding and not respecting the whales space which was so sad to see! We also loved that the boat wasnt too crowded. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable!

      Great experience!
Great trip with Whale Watching Club. We managed to spot both dolphins and whales! Amazing! Unfortunately I got sea sick during the trip but the crew took good care of me, giving me a tablet and making sure I felt better afterwards. Definitely recommended!

Now off season ( end of April to mid of July )💯
WWC is really a very good team because when we told them that we wanted to go whale watching, they told us that they don't do those trips because the sea is very rough and bad weather these days. We were also warned not to go whale watching. However, we ignored WWC's advice on another vessel to go whale watching and it was a fruitless trip. This was noted thanks to WWC's honest advice🙏

Must read before whale wat watching in Mirissa
The see is really very rough and immediately they returned the boat to the shore. I see lot of foreigners with 1 or 2 year old kids whom suffered a lot. Almost everyone in the boat vomitted. They should warn the travelers about this. Instead your tour agent and boat operators having secret pact to lure the money. It is better to enjoy the beaches of mirissa

      Great experience
Great experience with the Whale Watching Club. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, truly committed to giving you a great experience. Plenty of food and drinks on board. Clean and comfortable boat. They organised a tuktuk for the hotel pickup which was also very helpful. Overall, just a great experience. Oh yes, and we saw blue fins and lots of dolphins.

Excellent Whale Watching trip. Lots to see, knowledgeable and helpful staff.
We did three days of whale watching with Manoj and his team at WWC. Firstly I would point out that his actual boat is certainly the best from all the local operators. It is spacious and he doesn’t overcrowd like many of the other operators do. The boat itself is modern, safe and very stable on the water (so less chance of becoming sea sick). The staff on board look after customers well and are knowledgeable. But the key benefit is Manoj himself who has unbelievable spotting skills. We are experienced whale and dolphin spotters, but there is no way I could see what he identified from such a distance. This meant no opportunity was missed to see something. Don’t be fooled into joining a busier boat, this is not a good thing if you are really interested in seeing something. I highly recommend this company and wish you the same luck we had (we saw spinner dolphins - a mega pod two days, bottle nose dolphins, risso dolphins, a fin whale and a blue whale).

Unfortunately the weather was that day rough at sea but despite those external conditions , the trip was excellent as we saw a mother fin whale with her calf and could follow it for long time. Thanks to the captain and staf that were very kindly attentif at the same time taking care of their clients their needs especially the sea was rough that day. The captain was very aware not to approach the animals too near in order not to scare the animals. We think they provided one of the best services in Marissa for whale watchers. Respecting the whales but also their clients. The boat was not overcrowded and we felt safe !

My husband and I booked a tour with these guys after reading previous reviews based on their ethical approach and were so pleased we did. Communication was great from initial enquiry to final information. The boat was very spacious as passenger numbers are limited so there was plenty of room to move around and get good views of the marine life. Tea and coffee were served shortly after boarding and everyone was offered sea sickness tablets. (I have never felt sea sick even during some very rough crossings in the English Channel but my husband and I had brought our own, having read previous posts, which we took with our breakfast box shortly after leaving our hotel some 2 hours earlier. Fortunately the sea was very calm and we probably did not need to have taken them.) Shortly after departing we were served a very nice breakfast consisting of a fried egg sandwich, a sausage, slice of fresh pineapple and a banana. It wasn't long before we were delighted by the antics of a pod of dwarf spinner dolphins, the first of many. We also saw tuna, flying fish and a fin whale twice! Manoj and his crew were happy to impart their knowledge of the marine life we saw and Manoj kept a respectable distance from the whale, not chasing or hounding it like many of the other boats but because of his experience he was able to predict where the whale was likely to resurface after diving and we were privileged to see it appear just metres from the boat on the second occasion. Amazing given that most of the other boats were still some distance off. On the way back to Mirissa we were served with fresh fruit, a coconut roti with sambal and a soft drink. Water is also freely available on board from a large 20l dispenser. The boat also briefly moors just outside the harbour for anyone wanting to take a quick dip.
We had an absolutely brilliant experience and would not hesitate to recommend. Whale sightings are not guaranteed but Manoj will give you the best chance.

Just a couple of things to note......passenger details are required before departure including passport numbers but you are not required to take passports with you, also payment is by cash only, they do not have a card machine.

Had a wonderful day with the Whale Watching Club. My wife was to accompany me but was unwell on the day, so I went alone. On check in and having explained that my wife would not be coming the Skipper immediately refunded the money, even though I protested that it was not necessary.
The trip itself was great, we saw spinner and bottle nose dolphins, turtles and three fin whales, all at close quarters. The skipper seemed to know instinctively where to wait for the whales to surface, and you could see his enthusiasm for these beautiful creatures.
The crew shared this enthusiasm and we’re ready with information and to answer questions, as well as bring around food and drinks.

I cannot recommend the Whale Watching Club enough.

Just back from Sri Lanka and can highly recommend Whale Watching Marissa.
The boat is a catamaran - so very stable even in a swell, the team don't overload it and the whale spotters are knowledgeable and sharp.
The biggest stand out difference with this outfit is that the boat captain really understands his business and respects the whales.
We could see other boats charging around chasing each other and not minding about how close they got to the whales. Our captain had an intuitive feel for where they would next surface, followed his own instincts and genuinely respected the environment he was working in. Our reward was to be on the spot more often than not when the whales surfaced. Glad I picked this boat and can recommend it to you.

The boat was quite crowded but, except when there was a good prospect of seeing wildlife, almost everyone was seated. The crew was friendly and very helpful and breakfast, snacks and drinks were plentiful and good. We did see a fin whale which surfaced briefly. It was surrounded by all the 10 or so whale watching boats that were on the water. Our skipper made an effort to back off and give the whale space and then to take us to clearer water. We saw a turtle and, back near the post, a pod of bottle nosed dolphins, but again, they were surrounded by boats vying to get close to them. We stopped for a swim on the way in. The boat left at around 6:30 returning at about 14:00 - most people dozed off for some of the trip. At times moving around the boat was a challenge due to the sea conditions. However we enjoyed being out on the water in the cooling sea breeze.

We read a lot of reviews of the different whale watching trips and we chose Whale Watching Club because of positive reviews and the ethical/environmental aspects .

The reviews were 100% correct Captain Manoj and the team really care about the animals and their environment, on our boat a tourist dropped a small piece of plastic, and 2 crew members ran to pick it up.

The boat "seats" 80, but they only sell a max of 45 tickets so everyone gets a good view, On the day we went there were about 30 guests - some of the other boats we saw were absolutely packed.

We were the 1st boat to leave Mirissa harbour (6.30am) and it was like we were alone on the water. Also, when we saw a Fin Whale (stunning!) as other boats approached we moved to other areas where there were no other boats.

I would suggest taking sea sickness tablets, we did and didn't suffer at all though a couple of people on the boat did, although the crew provided tablets for them.

We saw, a Fin Whale (multiple times) 100's of spinner dolphins, flying fish, barracuda, tuna, and turtles. It was nice that the crew explained what we were seeing and at all times we kept a respectful distance.

Along with the Elephant Safari at Udawalawe this was the highlight of our Sri Lanka holiday - we would definitely recommend.

We had an amazing time with WWC. The entire experience from booking to the actual tour was extremely smooth and hassle-free. Every detail was communicated well in advance to avoid any last min surprises. Manoj, who was heading the crew was very kind and professional. In fact the entire crew was polite and welcoming.

We got really lucky with the whale spotting. Spotted blue whales and big groups of dolphins from really close. Thanks to the skills, experience and intent of the captain and other crew members who were constantly trying their best to spot whales.

Highly recommend this for whale watching in Mirissa, Srilanka.

Wonderful whale watching experience with environmentally minded crew and captain. Pradeep, one of the crew, from a long line of Sri Lankan fishermen, amazed us with his balance during the more choppy parts, providing a helping hand and a smile to all that needed it. The captain was friendly and enthusiastic, and showed genuine care about not disturbing the whales. We saw a fin whale in one excursion and a blue whale in another, with spinner dolphins in both.

Fantastic tour! The crew were very good at predicting the whales location and we were the first boat to see a blue whale. They talked about the different sealife we could see and were very knowledgeable. When it got too crowded we moved away and saw loads of dolphins and a turtle too. Stopped at the end in a beautiful spot to swim and jump off the boat. Food was great too.

    Would recommend!

My wife and I took the whale watching tour on April 17. Staff were quick to respond on WhatsApp to book the tour and prior to booking, ensure you are aware there is no guarantee of seeing whales (saying there is 50% chance). The tour is well organized and ran, a comfortable boat, service of breakfast, a fruit bowl, roti, soft drinks, water and a beer. The staff are very welcoming and want to inform you about the animals you see.

Unfortunately we did not see any whales but did see an incredible amount of spinner dolphins. We also were able to see a group of Risso’s dolphins, which the staff said was quite rare at this time. Due to not seeing any whales, we were offered to come back the next day, only paying the government tax ($6,000 LKR/person instead of $16,000). We returned on April 18 and unfortunately, did not see any whales again. We did see again though many spinner dolphins and a group of bottlenose dolphins. Although disappointed we spent 2 mornings and did not see any whales, we realize that nature cannot be controlled and respect the fact the Whale Watching Club is ethically run and will not try to manipulate or encourage whales for the purpose of human entertainment.

My only suggestion would be too ask the staff on WhatsApp (or other methods of communication) what the total whale sightings have been the previous days before making your decision if it’s not in peak season like us. Even though we didn’t see any whales, would still recommend this your company!
