About
Want a glowing and unforgettable night? This Bio-Bay Kayak Tour is what you need! On this tour, you will cross a canal inside the nature reserve that is surrounded by various types of mangroves. This protects from strong winds and helps you to paddle easily in peaceful waters. The best part of this tour is to enjoy the incredible glittering water of the "Big Lagoon"! Tiny bioluminescent organisms called "pyrodiniums bahamenses" are the responsible for this wonder of nature. They produce blue-green light from top to bottom of this bay every time you touch or move the water with your kayak!

Fun,magical, absolutely worth doing!
The entire experience from start to finish was enjoyable. We were able to see the moonrise (didn’t know that was a thing) which was spectacular. The guides were funny, informative and safety conscious. Noel, Jordan,Miguel and David were wonderful. I especially loved chatting with David on the way back about all things Puerto Rican. It was insightful and fun! The bioluminescence were magical! They were not at peak but still absolutely worth seeing. It is an experience our family will share with one another and others for a lifetime!

Fun for family of teens and adults.
Lots of fun. The water glowed and they provided tarps to block the full moon so we could really see the bio-luminescence The staff was very tentative and kind.

Fun but disappointing
Nov 2021
We had fun kayaking in the dark. The guides were very friendly and upbeat. When we got to the lagoon the informative discussion was brief and solid. The bioluminescence was more a few candles rather than fireworks, and that was disappointing. We put a tarp over the heads of 3 kayaks to view what we could. Once is enough.

Enjoyable experience but not worth doing it again.

This is definitely a neat experience due to the fact that there are only 5 Bio bays on the world. So it’s neat to do it just to experience that, however, the glow wasn’t what I was expecting. The guides were informative and friendly. The kayak trip was a mile to the bio bay and once there, they did a mini historical and scientific explanation. We then placed a tarp over 3 kayaks to make it as dark as possible to see the glow maximized…. It was decent at best. Cool thing to say you have done but I wouldn’t do it again. If you have never done it, it is worth it once but after that… not really. Make sure you go when there is NO moon out- that gives you the best opportunity to see the glow. If you have never kayaked before, it may be a little difficult to keep up with the guides - my husband and I have both kayaked before leisurely and we were
Fine… the snack was a bottle of water (Luke warm) and a mini size Pringle chips-Slightly disappointing. Also, if you come with someone or a group they will put you in a double kayak so you must paddle together …. Also, we had a couple women in our group that had clearly had been drinking prior to this and required a lot of extra help and “babysitting” from our guides. So that was annoying. Hard to control that kind of situation though. Overall it was cool to say we did together but it wasn’t what I expected.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave your experience impressions. It gives us the satisfaction that you get to live the night kayaking experience safely with our experienced guides. However, it does make us sad you get to see several inconveniences while visiting. Bioluminescence is very unpredictable. We have been experiencing an on-off from 30% to 50% of this phenomenon for the past few days. This turns the "biobay" experience unique for some of our guests, or, unfortunately, some others disappointed. A full moon can be a problem some nights, but to clarify, not always the light pollution will affect. Depending on its rise up or moonset could not be any inconvenience to get to see the light. We always use the tarp with or without the moon to ensure you have the best experience. Another fact for the phenomenom is, that what you see past week could improve from one day to another, depending on temperature, sedimentation, oxygenation and more. We reserve the right of admission. We won't let any visitor participate if we notice the use of drugs, alcohol, or misconduct before the tour starts. We take this very seriously. It is not our pleasure to babysit drunks. We apologize if we didn't identify any of this behavior and stopped it before the departure. At least non of our guides report this situation. Even though the day of your trip, we ran with five lid guides taking care of everyone. Keeping the paste with our guides is easy for experts or beginners. Every night we take people that never kayaked before and loved our trip. We also have lots of 5-star reviews about these non-experience guests. As you mention at the beginning about our friendly staff, they won't think twice if you ask for an additional snack or water. It is always our pleasure to serve you.

Disappointed and misled

It needs to be made clear to the customers that the bioluminescence is not really there. The trip needs to be described as night kayaking where maybe you will see bioluminescence. I did not enjoy putting a tarp over my head to look at nothing it was stupid. I did the Lagoon 10 years ago and I understand that it has changed but this was false advertising. Customers need to know what they are getting I didn't have to drive an hour from San Juan to go on a kayak ride at night I could have done it here. And the guides knew there was no bioluminescence they kept promising us : they'll be some here they'll be some there it will be under the tarp, and there was none.

Thank you for joining us; I understand your feeling, and we feel sorry for your frustration, but it is essential to clarify. If we see a few weather factors that will turn off, we have no problem calling our visitors to advise. We have done this before. Most of our guests stay with the reservation because they understand that a night adventure is still awaiting. So it is not about taking advantage or lying. Please understand that with mother nature and on tropical islands, weather changes from one moment to another. It also happens before we announce low light, and its incredible bioluminescence, sometimes, unfortunately, vise versa. Before your review with the same date, it explains that under the tarp was the way to see the glow. When our guides are dispersing inside the lagoon and trying again, it is because the method works. They search for the tide flow and see for better concentration. So it is not about promising; our guides feel the same frustration when this situation happens and make sure all resources and knowledge are applied. The Biobay is as beautiful as years ago; what does change is the factor that could be more sensitive to climate changes. For future reservations, we will be more than happy to help you choose a better night. Feel free to give us a call and get the latest forecast from our guide reports.

Beautiful experience!
The guides were very professional, organized ,and helpful! I was nervous about kayaking at night but they made me feel at ease. The experience was so beautiful! Our guide Omar was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the organisms that make the lagoon glow. They put a tarp over us so we could see the glow better because the moon was bright. One tip- you will get wet from the waist down because you have to wade in the water to get into your kayak. It was a wonderful once in a lifetime experience!!

good experience
Nov 2021
Trip was great but bioluminescence was a bit let down. We were told on some days the phenomenon is dull but overall experience was great. Kids got a bit scared going into the bay while kayaking in pitch dark between the mangroves but it is part of the experience.
Word of advice: If it is your first time kayaking, trip will be physically demanding and also a bit scary doing it in the dark.

The location we went to had several kayaking businesses that guided you towards the bio luminescent waters, but I have no doubt that this is one of the best ones available.
The tour guys were very friendly, and made us laugh several times. We were also able to see the glowing waters! It was a breathtaking experience.
