      Enjoyable visit
We did the self-guided tour of the prison and spend close to 2 hours wandering around. This was a great experience, with lots of information around for us to read. We loved that there were cells demonstrating the change in the layouts and facilities across the years. Whilst we didn't do a guided tour, we did meet one of the tour guides who talked is through a few things. He was very engaging and knowledgeable so I am sure a guided tour with him would have been very informative. Overall, this was good value for money and very interesting

Prison Wonderland. A great family day out!
Went to Shrewsbury Prison’s Winter Wonderland on 8th Dec and really enjoyed it. The Christmas Trees and decorations were really pretty. We received a lovely warm welcome, were spoiled rotten at the Tipple on Tap Vintage Bar, had yummy Cam’s Donuts and bought some really nice unusual keepsakes from the local friendly traders. Our daughter enjoyed the Snow Globe and we all enjoyed the wonderful storytelling by No-El, the Very Important Elf (aka Jill) who helped us save Santa. Brilliant entertainment and another fab day out at one of our favourite places ❤️

      So much effort made
We felt for everyone that had made so much effort at the December Christmas Fair. It was a freezing cold day and so we really didn't want to stay too long. We thought that the Trade Stands had some excellent products and the Brass Band was superb and gave the event a real Christmassy feel. The service in the Prison's own cafe was very slow and could really do with a review of how it worked.

      Christmas market
There were definitely disadvantages in regards to the weather, it was very cold, however I was disappointed that none of the stalls had different flavours of mulled wine for sale. Last year we could sample mulled wine in many places, this year there were zero, why was this? Are they not allowed to anymore? The stalls were good and we enjoyed the brass band but overall I would have to say it was disappointing.

      Poor winter wonderland
We have visited Shrewsbury prison a few times and have always enjoyed it so when we saw there was a winter wonderland we thought it might be interesting. We were late arriving as hardly any parking sp had to park in town and walk to the prison. When we got there we were greeted warmly like always the staff are all great no problem there. But the winter wonderland cost £20 for both of us and it was very poor. Poorly signposted only around 4 stalls and 4 food trucks. We choose to eat in the restaurant again badly run it cost over £8 each for a burnt bacon and brie bap and a luke warm cup of coffee apart from the novelty factor it was very poor won't be bothering again

      Signage needed!!!!!!!
Winter wonderland on saturday 14th Dec 2024 It was freezing inside and there were no signs of any use to direct you to where the craft stalls were. Winter wonderland was not all that wonderlandy as half of the trees were not lit up ( although they had lights on them) and the lights too bright inside to give it that 'Christmas glow'. Orchestra and choir were very good though. We nearly left after 10 minutes wondering what on earth we had paid a tenner entrance fee for. Eventually, with the help of some fellow intrepid explorers, we found ourselves outside ( windtunnel due to Storm Derragh and no fault of the prison) and shuffled about down open corridors until we happened upon the craft stalls. Come on guys, a few signs on doors would have been very helpful and surely event staging 101! The stalls were nice and festive and we had a good time, but could so eaily have been very different.

      Definitely NOT a wonderland!
We had friends visiting and decided to go to the winter wonderland. It was truly dreadful, very dishevelled looking, poorly decorated, lacking in any kind of Christmas spirit. It was freezing cold and honestly had nothing to recommend it as a 'wonderland'. Felt truly ripped off.

      Christmas Winter Wonderland
We visited the Christmas Winter Wonderland yesterday. It was utterly disappointing. Banqueting roll covering the walls for a snow effect which was hanging off or signage showing you which way to go. Tight spaces which I questioned if it was safe for fire evacuation, especially for wheel chairs! I felt so sorry for the traders. Would not recommend.

Winter Wonderland - not so accessible
Despite the horrible weather, we made the journey to Shrewsbury Prison, for the Winter Wonderland. As one of our party was in a wheelchair, prior to booking tickets we checked the accessibility information which stated that all areas of the prison were accessible, apart from the upper landings which could only be accessed by stairs. We decided this was absolutely fine, as we weren't expecting the market to be on the upper landings. When we arrived, a very polite and helpful lady advised us that she needed to arrange a way for us to get in, as the entrance they were using for the event was stepped. This may seem minor to anyone without a disability, but to find that simply gaining entrance to the event was going to be an issue, immediately put a damper on the day. We were send around the prison on our own, to find the door she described to get us inside. The door was not wide enough for the wheelchair, and my husband had to get out of his chair and struggle inside while I manhandled the chair through the narrow door and passage. Once we were inside, getting around the event was not too bad, but thankfully we had earlier tickets and so it wasn't too busy initially. We did have to ask people to make space for us to get through, particularly on the ground floor landing, where the band and food tables had been set up. We were unable to access all of the market, as there was a tight u-turn through into one area, that the wheelchair had no chance to get through. It very quickly became busy, and from that point my husband in the wheelchair couldn't see anything apart from other guests backsides. We decided to leave at this point, and had to battle our way through the crowds and narrow doors to get out. I enjoyed looking around the cells and reading the displays, but my husband could only look at things quite superficially, as the doors were too narrow to access. The Christmas market itself was ok, some nice stalls and friendly people. Sadly however, the day was yet again spoiled by accessibility not actually being accessible. This is a common theme in our experience, and I feel it important to raise with the company. If you are going to say your attraction is accessible - make sure it actually is! Try going around in a wheelchair and see how you get on. It is so demoralising and dehumanising to come across a hurdle after hurdle, just to enjoy a day out like anyone else. In 2024 we should be doing better. Would I visit again? I would, and I would love to do one of the guided tours or experiences - but I would have to leave my husband behind.

      Winter Wonderland extremely dissatisfied
Went to the winter wonderland. Total chaos on entering, booked a time slot 11am, people allowing entrance just let everyone in regardless of time. Prison was freezing cold, and heaving with people. If a fire officer had called no way they would have been kept open, place packed and lots of flammable decorations on the walls. No notices of where stalls were and long queue to get a hot drink. Totally disappointed visit and defiantly not worth the admission.

Too busy in main area and no signs to know where markets were
Went to the winter wonderland Great atmosphere as you walked in but no signs anywhere to get to market stalls. Very unorganised and time slots were ignored.

      Winter Blunderland
We were incredibly disappointed with our visit to Winter Wonderland. The festive spirit was completely absent, with tacky decorations and poor signage adding to the overall underwhelming experience. The layout was chaotic, and the shops were cramped and uninspiring. Even for children, there was little to enjoy. We left after only 40 minutes, eager to escape the disappointing atmosphere. It’s hard to imagine how much worse it would have been on a good weather day, as many people likely stayed away due to the storm. We live and learn

Finished our 'stretch' ...let out due to our Good behaviour'
Good day out. Touring a prison is not the first thing that springs to mind when choosing what to do, but this was both informative and fun. We did the self guide tour and made sure we explored every nook and cranny. Information boards ensured we did not miss out on anything. Took many photo's ..mostly silly ones,...but also a few to remind us that prison life is not as 'cushy' as many think!! ...Will return with family next year, I recommend this as a day well spent👍

Save Santa ,,,,,don't go save your money instead
Terrible from start to finish , we got there early and had to hang around in a tiny gift shop as our tour didn't actually allow us access to the prison . A lovely lady collected us and took us to whst looked like a disused storeroom covered in red tissue paper where she spent half an hour telling us a ridiculous story . The save santa part was to find 4 jigsaw puzzles in the room ,,luckily there was only my granddaughter and her friend no idea what would have happened had event been full . My granddaughter and her friend were 10 and fair play to their polite acting skills as even i wanted to laugh at how pathetic it was . Don't save santa and save your money lol

In the still of the night.... my daughter and I booked the Lights Out Tour arriving at 7:45pm on 6th August. Met by Mick our tour guide (an ex prison officer who worked at the prison) who showed us around governors office, wings, cells, hanging room. The prison is an amazing place.
The stories and history of the prison were told brilliantly by Mick with professionalism and humour.
They have social distancing and one way system in place, hand sanitisers dotted on walls, and face masks are available for a small fee of £5.
Highly recommended tour. We will be returning for another visit soon.

Visited during half term holidays. Our tour guide was Graham an ex-prison officer from the prison. He was fantastic- very informative and had lots of stories to tell, he managed to engage all the audience and answered any questions we had. It was very cold inside the prison but you could hire coats for the tour. Lovely cafe too.

Attended Shrewsbury prison jail tour today, 4 of us, cold but was expected, enjoyed it from start to finish, Graham our tour guide was fabulous. Very informative and paced right for 2 hours. Visited all departments which put experiences into context, the stories that were retold are great to understand a prison officers life in Shrewsbury. Thank you.
The only comment that I must make that is a negative is the canteen prices are high. If we weren't going for another appointment very soon after I would of chosen to eat else where. A cheese and ham panni @ £6.50 I think for an adult , £3.25 for a child, a little on the high side, my opinion

We went on the guided tour which lasted for about two hours twenty minutes. It was led by an ex guard who used to work at the prison which added a little authenticity to the experience. He had a lot of information about the processes in the prison and shared personal stories of his experiences. This was a working prison until only a few years ago which I think adds to the interest. We went in February and there is no heating in the prison apart from in the cafe, so advice is to dress up warm because in the winter you'll be standing around for two hours in the cold listening to the guide. It was interesting but by the end our feet where freezing and I was ready for it to end.
It was very windy and rainy the day of our visit and so the guide did not take us down to the visiting block. We did take a look at it on our own later as you can stay as long as you like after the tour and wander around. Unfortunately there are not a lot of information boards around the place so the advice is book in advance on a guided tour. I think that we would have got round the place very quickly if not for the tour.
There's a small museum that's not too interesting.
It's £4.50 to park your car. We discovered afterwards that on a Sunday the street parking by the station just down the road is free so we could of saved money there. It would of been nice if the staff had of pointed this out.
We were slightly underwhelmed with the visit but would give it a resounding ok. I think that maybe we were spoilt by visiting Kingston Penitentiary in Canada recently which is incredible.

I haven’t actually been to Shrewsbury prison yet as my sister and I were meant to be going there this coming Wednesday 28th for the Ghost Tour. However, I have felt compelled to write this review to raise a point about how Shrewsbury prison have treated their customers with utter contempt after I have been informed this week with one week’s notice that our tour is now cancelled due to “filming”. We are bitterly disappointed as we were both very much looking forward to this with it being so close to Halloween and also to finally have something to do this year that has not ended up being cancelled!! Cancelling because of Covid is completely understandable, but in this case I do not feel that cancelling people’s pre booked tours because in the meantime Shrewsbury prison have obviously accepted a filming contract, for presumably a large fee, is acceptable, and they have totally disregarded their normal paying customers who were looking forward to their events. I only booked this tour near the end of August and was not made aware of any possible filming at the time of booking, so this is obviously a last minute decision the prison has made in the meantime. Apparently the filming and tours cannot mix because of Covid, and so the tours already booked have been cancelled in favour of the filming, rather than the prison honouring them, which is what they should have done. This is not a valid Covid-related cancellation in my eyes.
This would have been poor customer service at the best of times, but considering the year that most people have had, and to have something booked to look forward to, only to have it cancelled for non-Covid reasons because the prison had a better offer, is to me totally unacceptable. I have asked for a refund as the whole point of this tour was for Halloween and it does not reopen again until the end of November.
I won’t re-book to visit Shrewsbury Prison because now I know the ethos that the prison has in regards to its customers. Poor show Shrewsbury Prison, very poor show 👎

We pre-booked our 2 hour guided tour on Saturday 1st February and are glad we did.
The ex prison guard was a perfect host, knowledgable and entertaining. The prison was fascinating, and very cold so dress warmly if you visit in the winter months! The guided tour is really a must as it may otherwise just be a really old building full of rooms with words above some of the doors. The insight into prison life from beginning to end was fascinating. Well worth a visit, have already recommended to friends.

Our 2 hour guided tour around the prison was led by Keith, who was very informative and gave us a great insight in to prison life both from the perspectives of life as a prisoner and as a guard. He took us from the initial booking in processes right through to the Female wing and the Execution chamber and explained how things had changed throughout the prison's 220 year history. Keith spent over 30 years as a prison officer and was based at Shrewsbury prison towards the end of his career so more recent information was all from his personal experiences, which was great. He was also more than happy to answer questions from the group, throughout the tour.

Shrewsbury prison is smaller than we imagined and some of the areas had been cordoned off due to filming taking place, but this did not detract from the overall tour. It was a pity that the visiting room is not set up to show how this would looked and we didn't get to visit the canteen (possibly due to Covid 19 restrictions)

Don't forget to wrap up warm - it's a little chilly in there!!

The prison is really easy to get to and we were able to park right across the road (£5.50) for the day. This enabled us to walk up in to Shrewsbury City Centre for lunch, without having to worry about the time. It's also right next to the train station - so ideal if travelling by train too.

If I could give this more than 5* I would. Mick, our tour guide, was absolutely phenomenal and made the whole experience. It was fantastic having an ex officer of the working prison lead the tour and give you a proper insight into the prison.

Each section of the prison was well explained and given plenty of time for questions, photos and own exploration. The hanging room was very authentic and a huge eye opener to the old ways prisons were ran.

Mick not only gave great little stories of his own experiences, he handled a large group of 44 very well and made it feel like we were on a 1:1! Created a light and friendly atmosphere in a place I thought it couldn’t be possible.

All staff around the prison were welcoming and friendly. Great price for the experience given too

Cannot wait to visit again and see the new Georgian underground tour!!

Without a doubt I would recommend to everyone.

Our friends were coming to stay with us and the weather was appalling so we searched for indoor activities and came across Shropshire Prison guided tours. After reading the reviews we decided to book our tickets, then contacted our friends and asked them to bring warm coats hats gloves etc. Graham was our guide that day, he was very engaging, full of information and some very entertaining stories. It was a real eye opener and we were shocked to hear that up until 1995 there was no toilets or shower facilities in the prison. It was very cold in there too, so the prisoners certainly didn't have it easy.

Thanks Graham we had a great day out and I would highly recommend it.

Went on the lights out tour was a small group of us social distance Measures well thought out and put in place. Was a brilliant tour different to other tours as it’s a prison officer from the actual prison not just someone reading from a script. Will definitely be returning to do other tours and activities in the prison.
