Highlights
  • Explore Avignon on foot for an intimate glimpse of its history and culture
  • Breeze straight into the Pope’s Palace with skip-the-line entry included
  • No need to carry a travel book with insights provided by your live guide
  • Round off your experience with a complimentary glass of local wine
What to expect
  • Your 3-hour sightseeing tour of historic Avignon begins in the morning. Meet your guide in at a central location near the Pope’s Palace and stroll through the town’s historic center. As you walk, hear about Avignon’s extensive history, officially beginning with Roman conquest in the sixth century BC, though most renowned as the papal residence during the 14th and 15th centuries.  Follow medieval streets and alleys, and climb to the top of the city’s famous ramparts – medieval constructions that were restored in the 19th century. From atop the ancient walls, enjoy sweeping vistas of the Avignon city and the rushing Rhône River.  Next, head to Popes’ Palace, the world’s largest Gothic palace and a UNESCO-listed site, where you’ll have skip-the-line access to tour the building’s impressive interior. Learn about medieval life in the palace and explore galleries, fresco-adorned chapels, papal apartments and grand ceremonial rooms. Finish your excursion with a visit to the Place de l’Horloge (Clock Tower Square), the main square in the heart of town from which the clock is – ironically – hardly visible. However, you’ll view the beautiful opera theater and city hall before heading to a historic local bar for a glass of Côtes du Rhône wine. Your walking tour ends in central Avignon in the afternoon.

Very good
Excellent tour with a very good and engaging guide. We were surprised to see that the tour would be English and French- while a bit inconvenient, very well handled by our guide

Everything I wanted to know, and so much I didn't know I wanted to know!.
Aug 2019
I didn't even want to go on the tour. Who needs a guide? They have 'histopads' or audio guides surely. But that was before we met Julien! He was utterly delightful. Funny, knowledgable and passionate about his beloved Provence. In the all too brief three hours we covered not only the history of Avignon but also geography, French culture, the origins of the language, politics, parenting, WW2 and philosophy. As we skipped past the queues and dived through secret doors we were entranced and engaged. I felt so sorry for the queues of other people who hadn't had nearly such a delightful time. Sipping delicious wine in a nearby bar at the end of the tour, we, and the other couple on the tour, toasted Julien and agreed it had been money extremely well spent.

Nice tour
Jun 2019 • Friends
This was a nice succinct tour. Guillaume was great and spoke very good English. He managed to navigate our small group around the hordes or large groups and give us the highlights while skipping the dull parts. And ending up with a nice wine tasting is always nice!

Pope’s Palace
May 2019
Excellent tour. Beautiful structure and easily understood by the instruction the audio guide gives. Fascinating how the castle is laid out and how the Pope’s used each room to accommodate catholicism. Tour takes a couple of hours to do well and includes quite a few stairways that can slow down the feint of heart. To me this was one of the top things to see in Avignon.

Worthwhile to pay for a private tour
Apr 2019
We enjoyed this tour with just my wife and I and our teen daughter and niece. Our guide Marc kept a nice pace while not only sharing good and interesting info and facts on the history of Avignon and the Palais des Papes but also engaging in conversation about the differences between life and perspectives in France and the US (in a politically neutral way). I think the personal touch always wins out over the over the large group or audio tour. Sure, it costs a bit more but you also get a lot more.

Too much to take in in 1/2 day
Oct 2018 • Couples
Guide frequently left group on our own with at best brief description of what we
were to see. Overwhelming without some help-frequently we did not know (remember) where we were or what we were looking at. Would have been nice to have taken us out onto ancient bridge instead of taking the limited time leaving us alone for 15 min in "garden' which was really not a garden atall. Not sure his heart was in the tour.

Well paced, well informed, well worth booking!

This walking tour came as part of a weekend package. The guide was friendly and informative with excellent English (the group we took the tour with was UK, US and French). The walk overran a bit - almost 4 hrs, including the final wine tasting - but it was a great introduction to the historic centre of Avignon and included an outstanding tour of the Palais des Papes. The guide also gave us useful advice on other parts of the centre we might like to see independently, and recommended some places to eat. And the included wine tasting was mmmmn-mmmn!!!
