I took my family to the Castles in Germany of King Ludwig the III rd. It was really the most unbelievable trip we have ever been on! It was early 2019 so there were no scaredemic junk going on. We were free to enjoy the entire trip uninhibited by current day fear.

In short, crowded but totally worth it if you like european history. Fantastic architectural achievements, made in the mid 19th century by the eccentric king ludwig II. We did the English tour of the old castle and the german tour of the new castle. Followed by a visit to the museum. Food and drinks in Fussen were cheaper then expected for a tourist area where they could likely charge more if they wanted.

Despite all the hooplas surrounding this world famous castle, I did find it a let-down. Here is what I would have done :
First, go up the Mary Bridge to view the gorgeous castle from a distance. Disclaimer for people who are afraid of heights, do not look down from the hanging bridge.
Next, go do the "herding" tour of the Neuschwanstein Castle. Don't build yourself up for this. Just go with the "herd".
Lastly, the Hohenschwangau Castle. Lesser known castle, but worth a visit too.
You could easily do all this in a morning.
Like it says in the title of my review : a let down but a must. It was worth it. But I would probably not visit again.

We booked the full day tour and were at the pick up site an hour early. We saw a van parked and said "I hope that is not our van". It was our van. It was small and dirty. More people showed up then could fit so the half day folks were taken to Neuschwanstein first- then more half day people showed up- a second trip over while we waited- By 9:45 we were on our way- then a bridge was out- then half of Linderhof was closed since it was Oct 15th and it was winter schedule. We were delayed in leaving while driver was on the phone, we were not allowed out of the car at Oberammergau then 5 miles out of town he was running our of gas- so back we went for gas. He needed to be back at 1:30 for pick up of half day people and he was late. Overall- this tour was a bust. There was no queue at Neuschwanstein nor Linderhof. The 25 dollars worth of tickets could be easily bought after Oct 15th- so if you have a car- take yourself

This tour is a TOTAL Waste of time. The two castles you see are very close together and the stop in Oberammergau allows for only about 20-30 min to see the town. We also agree with the previous post about the van. There was nothing "Private" or personal about this tour at all. You will do MUCH better doing it yourself. AVOID this one!

When we got there, we got our tickets and then walked to the WC at the base of the mountains, so on the same level as the ticket counter and lake. A sign on the door said it was closed for cleaning and would be closed for about 30 minutes. One of my family members had to go really bad, so we decided to wait since we had time before our first tour anyway. We waited for exactly 27 minutes with a line forming behind us. When the bathroom was finally ready, the cleaning lady unlocked the door, stuck her hand around to grab the sign, and then ran back into the bathroom. Okay, weird, but whatever, we walked (ran) in and of course there was a pay station. We scrambled to get into our bags and find 50cents that would have been nice to know about for the 27 minutes we were waiting. I guess we just should have known. We walk into the bathroom after paying and oh. my. lanta did it smell like straight up pee. It was disgusting. Also, there were 3 stalls in the ladies, and I was in one and my sister was in another, so my mom walks into the 3rd one thinking we are the first three, and it gets slammed back into her face. The only reason for this is the cleaning lady went into that stall after "cleaning" the bathroom? Still seems odd to me but whatever. When I walked out of my stall (that had no hook for my backpack) there were ladies waiting in line holding their noses because it smelled so bad. Awful. On another note, the castles were amazing but be prepared for cramped spacing during the tour. Also I recommend riding the horse drawn carriages up or down. It's cheaper when going down and you pay the driver after getting on.
