- Your tour begins near Oppian Hill, from which you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Colosseum. On arrival at the world wonder, you’ll avoid long lines with your fast-track pass and head straight inside the Colosseum. Travel back 2,000 years as your guide tells stories of gladiator battles, bloody animal fights, and executions in front of 50,000-strong crowds of spectators. If you’ve opted to upgrade your experience, you’ll then visit the arena floor and subterranean chambers, which are usually closed to the general public. Visit cells in which criminals and wild animals were kept, and follow in the footsteps of Roman gladiators in the arena. After ample time at the ancient landmark, you’ll continue to the Roman Forum via Via Sacra. The sprawling site has minimal signage, but your guide takes you to the highlights and gives you the inside scoop. Learn about the historical significance of the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Temple of Julius Caesar before concluding your tour with sweeping city views atop Palatine Hill.

We were so lucky to have the knowledgeable and very personable Christina as our guide. Her enthusiasm for her city was infectious, and her passion for her academic subject of art history (PhD no less) really brought the Colosseum and Forum to life. There were 12 of us, a small enough group to make it feel personal and fun. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for and so much more - we sailed past queues, and were treated to interesting titbits of information that can’t be found on Google or in a guidebook. If you are new to the city I can’t recommend a personal guide highly enough. Handy hint - make sure you have water, a cap and sun cream as the sun above the Colosseum is strong even in Spring!

We had an amazing experience with Elizabet/Elizabeth. She was a brilliant tour guide and is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about all things to do with the tour as well as the full history of Rome. When asked questions she knew straight away what the answer was. We also liked that she told “true history” no matter how bad it was she said to never compare the bad history to things that happen now as “ that was just how it happened” which I feel this is a true representation of Romes history. The day we toured was cold so I would recommend if going in January is to wrap up warm. But other than that, we very HIGHLY recommend this tour and the guide!!

Took the basic (not small group) Colosseum tour as part of the full day combo package with the Best of Rome walking tour and found that it's better to just go for the colosseum tour and skip the city walk.
Lady archaelogist guide for the Colosseum tour was knowledgeable, engaging and made every effort to connect with and tailor her content to different members of her group - from young children to the older adults. She even supplemented her commentary with hard copy pictures she carried in her bag.
This was in contrast to the city walk guide who kept shoving mainly art history facts to participants even though not everyone seemed interested in what's being said. There was also no mention of the large number of eateries and gelato spots along the way until a participant asked for food recommendations at the end of the tour. Note also that the guide will not be entering the Pantheon to explain things inside. So before you pay for this city tour, maybe check out other free walking tours first that also cover the city centre - some of these other agencies have very creative itineraries that reflect their guides' efforts to offer something different to tourists.

Due to circumstances beyond our control (cruise ship transportation), we were running late for the start of this tour. 10 minutes prior to tour we phoned to let the tour operator know we were running 5 minutes late and asked if we could meet the tour at a different starting point. The answer was no. We arrived at the meeting point five minutes late after calling them again to try to get help finding their tour guide (it’s very crowded at the meeting point). The tour left without us and they offered only to let us tour after our bus back to the ship would already have departed. There were no individual tickets available to the coliseum - we traveled halfway around the world and were denied help. We witnessed other tour operators with the same issue rushing late arrivals to meet their tour guides and being very understanding and accommodating. The opposite was true of this tour company. We were denied a requested refund. Don’t book with them!!!!

Dear Vacationer713359,
First and foremost, I would like to express how sorry I am to hear that you missed your Colosseum tour.
As your voucher states, "It is the responsibility of all visitors to be at the meeting point 15 minutes before departure. Guests arriving after departure cannot be accommodated & missed tours or tickets cannot be refunded."
Tickets have a precise entry time and we cannot risk for the whole group to be left outside the venue.
Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kindest regards,
Federica B.

Wonderful tour in every way. Our tour guide, Flavia [? spelling] was exceptionally knowledgeable, very thorough, personable, and entertaining. In our group of 7 we had 3 grandsons, age 10 and 12. She engaged them throughout the tour and made them feel a part of it and allowed them to experience the full perspective of how unique the history is of that time in Roman history. We started at the Colosseum, and after a thorough tour of it we moved on to the Palatine Hill and then to the Forum. It's a lengthy tour but time seemed to fly by due to her way of conducting the tour. We could not even remotely been able to obtain the information she provided for us on our own; and it would have taken much longer. This tour is well worth the money paid and my entire family highly recommend it.

Our guide Amille arrived early and was extremely personable. She did her best to make sure a few latecomers had the chance to tour but ultimately we left without them. While waiting briefly for our entry time slot to come around Amille was able to give an interesting account of her life as well as the early life of the Colosseum. She was very knowledgeable and did not want to be drawn into giving false facts or any dubious time frames of when things may occurred. Amille was able to juggle a fellow tourer’s fall (mind your step people) with ensuring they were safe and we were all taking something interesting in. Amille was good with the larger crowds making sure we were all comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves throughout. There is an option to end the tour after the Colosseum or continue onto the Roman Forum, I would highly recommend continuing on to the Forum and viewing the entirety of the grounds (this could take an additional 2-3 hours) but very worth.

Marco guided us through the Colosseum and the Forum providing excellent insights and information about these sites. He navigated our group skillfully through these sites keeping us together despite there being many others visiting. We will always fondly remember his line: "We created nothing but nothing" meaning the ancient Romans beat us to the punch in their creativity and inventions. He also clarified alot of misconceptions about gladiators that artisitic license created through the popluar film. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment with Marco and appreciate his patience with our many questions.

I booked a Skip the Line: Colosseum Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill. We met with our guide at 10am. We booked a English speaking guide, but he had a very strong Italian accent and did not speak very good English so us and many others struggled to understand him. The Colosseum part or the tour was supposed to be an hour and a half, but this included time walking from the meeting point to the Colosseum and queing up which took around half an hour. We were then out of the Colosseum by 11:05am, meaning we only had 35 minutes inside viewing . The Colosseum tour was extremely rushed, the guide did not check whether anyone could keep up and was rushing ahead, meaning we could not enjoy our surroundings as we spent too much time trying to find him and make sure we weren't left behind. We walked past so many things without being given an opportunity to stop even for a quick photo.
We booked this tour see the Colosseum whilst also learning about its history, but did not feel as though we learnt anything and would have been better off walking around on our own.
We ended up leaving part way through the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum as the guide was continuing to rush and skip past bits and we found it to be much more enjoyable to walk around without the guide.
We did a different tour the previous day with the same company and that tour was so much better than this one as she kept the group together, kept the group informed of where we were going, and made sure everyone was OK.

Matteo was a fantastic guide. He provided a great commentary that painted a picture of how the colosseum was in its heyday. Highly recommend. Only one sticking point of the tour was that it didn't include the Roman Forum, and if you do the 3pm tour you don't have much time for a self-guided tour after the guide leaves. We spent too much time enjoying the view from Palatine Hill not realizing the Forum was closing at 7:15pm. Highly recommend this tour but pick an early tour time so you have the full day to enjoy the Forum at your leisure.

Well organised tour from the meeting point directly opposite the colosseum. Headphones were supplied which worked very well so we were able to hear our very informative guide Alexandra. She brought to life through her narrative of historical and architectural knowledge how the Romans lived and life as a gladiator. The tour finished inside the Forum. After a brief introduction to the history of the area we were left to explore and take advantage of the many photographic opportunities.
Would highly recommend this tour as you do jump queues and avoid the crowds.

Hi, visiting in November and would like to book this tour however a couple of questions, when it says a fully guided tour of Colosseum, does that include the Arena/ backstage etc.
Also once you go from Colosseum, to Roman Forums and then Palatine Hill- can you go back to the Colosseum/ Roman Forums on your own or not?
Many thanks

When we were there in August we had a very detailed and extensive tour of all three places. The Colosseum portion was incredible but we didn't go into the pits below. However I didn't feel we missed anything because we had quite a good stretch of time inside and outside the Colosseum and we left with amazing photos and a ton of awesome new knowledge/info about it's history. My understanding was that once we exited we were not able to go back inside the Colosseum.....unlike the Forum and Palantine Hill where we also had an incredibly detailed and extensive tour of those places as well.....but once the tour ended we were free to explore those places on our own. My wife and I did continue to take in both the Forum and Palantine Hill on our own afterwards and it was fantastic. For us the tour was the perfect amount of time and detail. It allowed us to feel like we really explored everything there was to see and learn. That said we are not huge history buffs who want to spend hours looking at architecture and reading plaques but I think even for people who want that kind of immersive experience they wouldn't be disappointed with this tour. I highly recommend taking this tour because of the "Skip the Line" element which really sped things up plus our guide was AMAZING so we were completely satisfied with the whole experience!

Our meeting point was just outside of the Colosseum, above the subway stop. It was our responsibility to get to the Colosseum. I am sure there are tours that originate in Citavecchia, but probably encompass multiple stops, including the Colosseum and Forum.
There are six of us interested in taking the Semi Private English Tour with arena access. I noticed online when going to book that tour is listed for 2 hours and Group of 20 tour is listed as 3 hours. Can you tell me what the difference is?
Are we seeing and learning more with the small group vs. the semi-private? Thank you.

I can't really say, sorry. You're best off contacting the tour operator directly. What I can tell you is that the 3-hour tour my group took also included Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, in addition to the Colosseum.
We will be traveling with my dad who uses a mobility scooter. He does not need it all the time and can walk shorter distances. Will this tour be an option for him?

I’m looking for a skip the line tour of the Colisseum - to include arena floor and underground. And then skip the line tickets to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, 2 people. Is this available? Live or audio tour is fine.
