Get a comprehensive overview of Lisbon—with in-depth commentary from a guide—on this half-day walking tour. Access the city’s highlights with ease, exploring the Alfama and Chiado neighborhoods and the Sé de Lisboa cathedral on foot without the hassle of parking. Plus, you'll make like a local and ride a vintage tram through the city’s hills, then stop for a traditional pastel de nata pastry.
What to Expect
Meet your guide and group at Praça de D. Pedro IV Square—also known as Rossio Square—located in central Lisbon. Listen to a short introduction to get oriented, and hear about the history of the square, built with native calcada Portuguesa stone.

Take in the sights, sounds, and aromatic smells from restaurants as you follow your guide through Restauradores Square and down Liberdade Avenue to see an important obelisk and plenty of examples of Portuguese art deco architecture, including the Eden Theatre.

Check out Rossio Cetral Station and learn the details of the 19th-century engineering marvel that is the tunnel to Sintra. Next up are Carmo Square and the Chiado neighborhood, where you’ll split up for some free time to explore independently (with recommendations from your guide on which local boutiques, restaurants, and bookstores are worth a visit).

Meet back up with the group at an arranged time for a ride on the vintage tram (tickets included in the tour price). Hear the history of the tram system while enjoying the ride with the locals who use it for their daily commute, then hop off in the Moorish quarter of Alfama. As you explore, learn about the tradition of fado music, stopping to peek into fado restaurants and performance spaces you would ordinarily walk right by.

The tour’s last stops are the oldest cathedral in Lisbon, Sé de Lisboa, and the grand Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio). After your guide’s final history lesson, get insider suggestions on where to explore further and say goodbye to your group.

Essential guide to this city

Our tour guide was excellent, clearly proud of his city and willing to show us "warts 'n' all". It's such a mixed bag of grand and tired, a melting pot of classes, cultures and characters. It is quite a tough walk, in a city of...More
