Small Group Day Trip from Reykjavik to see the Elements of the South Coast
Explore Iceland's south coast with a small group on this full-day trip from Reykjavik. With a maximum of 15 travelers, enjoy personalized attention from your guide while hiking on Sólheimajökull glacier, visiting a plane wreck site in Sólheimsandur, viewing a volcanic tube, and taking a dip in the Seljavallalaug geothermal pool. Pickup and drop-off at select hotels provided.
What to Expect

In this unique and active tour, you will hike on a glacier, descend into a lava cave, and ride a fat bike to the famous plane wreck on Sólheimasandur. Along the way, you witness the spectacular waterfalls along the south coast and can immerse yourself in a geothermal pool. All in one day!

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The first stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall which you can walk behind and get a unique point of view while feeling the vibrations of the water hitting the ground. It’s an automatic Instagram blockbuster.

Skógafoss waterfall

The pearl of the South Coast has to be Skógafoss waterfall. From the 60 meter high cliffs of East Eyjafjöll mountains, the waterfall pours down making, arguably, the most photogenic waterfall in the country. Over the years, the water has carved itself into the mountain, tucking the beautiful waterfall into a small gorge. Add rainbows forming in the waterfall’s spray and you have yourself a Kodak moment.

Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull glacier

Here the adventure continues at Sólheimajökull glacier which is part of the 4th biggest glacier in Iceland, Mýrdalsjökull. We will provide helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes before hiking on the ice for 1 to 1,5 hours. Our glacier guides are all trained and licensed and provide a safe, entertaining and informative hike. A spectacular experience to learn more about this breathtaking and increasingly rare natural phenomenon.

Fat bike ride to the DC-3 Plane Wreck on Sólheimasandur

After the glacier hike we head out to Sólheimasandur desert where a US Nacy DC3 crash landed in 1973 after running out of fuel in midair. The wreck has since then been immortalized in numerous music videos and viral photographs. The plane itself is 4 km from the nearest road so we provide the coolest transportation method available, fat bikes. In essence, we’ll be riding a fat bike over volcanic sand and ash towards a black sand beach containing a crashed Navy airplane deemed too far away to salvage.

Seljavallalaug geothermal pool

By now, you’ll be aching for some quiet time and so it will be time to swim in Seljavallalaug geothermal pool. Chosen one of the best pools in the world by the Guardian, it will certainly be among the most unique swimming experience of any visitors life. It was built in 1923 in a beautiful valley surrounded by steep mountains and inspiring lava rock formations. (Due to the lack of daylight the pool is not visited in the winter time, October to late April).

Secret Lava Cave

But we still have our final blow! Explore the inside of a lava cave which formed in a volcanic eruption 5000 years ago. Equipped with helmets and flashlights we will scramble over big lava rocks and crawl into the darkness of the Icelandic underground.

We did the South Coast Elements tour with our wonderful guide Maria. And as a added bonus, we had a second guide PK. This is a physically challenging tour and we were not as ready for the trip as we should have been. Maria was...More

Not very active and “do it yourselvers” but Iceland is of course awesome

Reminded me again why I don’t like bus/cruise ship type tours... don’t do this one if you fall into the same category... It’s also cheaper if you do this one yourself and buy a book/audio tape on the way. Yes I spent 14 hours on...More
