About
The Northern Lights are notoriously hard to predict, even in Tromso. So it makes sense to increase your chances of a sighting by joining a guided excursion, especially if you’re only in Tromso briefly. This tour delivers—a guide chooses a prime viewpoint according to the day’s weather and you'll enjoy soup beside a firelit camp as you watch. A drop-off back at your hotel afterward is included.

We were lucky to have clear skies all around Tromso and so our guide Virgil took us to a nearby valley on Kvaloya. He gave us warm clothes (it was -14 so wear every layer of clothing you have), warm soup and great stories. At first, we saw a really vague strip of sky that was a bit brighter than the surroundings, enough to take already great photos. But after waiting for about 1.5 hours the entire valley all of a sudden lit up! It's hard to describe, terms like 'dancing lights' do not make sense until you have seen the real thing. But this night, the valley was LIT with the lights. It was AWESOME and Virgil made great photos for our memories. We made a fire and when we were about to leave we were treated with another amazing lightshow. It came out of nowhere, but we saw a full crown of lights dancing straight above us. Green, red, purple, and pink, we got it all. So yeah, would recommend the tour with wandering owl, even if you're not as lucky as us with the lights, you will be given the best chance and experience with Virgil and this group. Thanks guys!

I joined the epic tour on the 1st of February, with the wonderful guides Ellie and Michael. Ellie gave us so much information during the drive, managing to simply the incredibly complex phenomenon that is the aurora. They took us to places that were far from light pollution that also had beautiful landscapes that we could enjoy while waiting for the aurora. They were very well organized logistically, and had a very positive energy (which is important when you're waiting for something that may or may not come, in freezing temperatures!) that made the tour a pleasure. Michael organised a sitting area complete with a fire at incredible speed, and Ellie took beautiful photographs, and was very helpful and patient when I was trying to take photos of my own. The lights came out very late in the night, but Ellie and Michael let us stay and watch until 2:00 AM even though there was an hour's drive back! It was a wonderful experience and I'd recommend it to anyone 😃

Thank you for the feedback! We love receiving feedback from our guests, it motivates our team during these cold winter months to give our guests the best possible experience with us. Of course, as you know we can not promise anything to do with the weather (like Aurora activity) but we can promise a positive experience; home-made meals, hot chocolate and biscuits - all made freshly (and with love)  in our Owls Nest. It has been a pleasure to have you on tour with us and we hope to welcome you back to Tromso again one day.

We spent two nights in the wild to hunt auroras and had of blast with Wandering Owl and I would totally recommend it.

The first night with Ellie was with no clouds and we went 20 minutes away from the city where we saw a lot of beautiful auroras.
After putting on hot suits and boots, we set camp behind a rock to protect from the wind and enjoyed a campfire to heat up and ate a delicious soup for dinner.
We even had the luck to meet a reindeer herd while heading back to the car.
Ellie was really nice and passionate about auroras and it was obvious how much she wanted to share this passion with us. She explained us all the science behind auroras, details on how it can evolve in the sky and how to find the northern star.

The second night with Max was cloudy so we had to ride around 2 hours to go to another valley. We stopped on a frozen lake and saw the clouds move away to let auroras appear.
While we were enjoying the auroras and taking pictures, Max carved out benches in the snow and started a camp fire. We had a tipical Norvegian hot dog (ish) meal with reindeer sausage and a particular potato based tortilla (we were told not to call them tortilla but I don't know how to describe them otherwise).
Max was really enthusiast with every light in the sky and explained some myths existing in different cultures around auroras.

Both those night were unique and a lovely experience I'm sure I will remember forever and Ellie and Max were really professionals.
They take pictures during the night with professional cameras to keep a souvenir.

I would definitely recommend Wandering Owl for an aurora hunt, it was an incredible experience.

Thank you for your lovely feedback! That's very often how it is up here, two nights in a row can be two completely different experiences. We were told by everyone we spoke to that our chances of seeing the Northern Lights on the evening we'd booked were slim to non. I'd resigned myself to just trying to enjoy the thrill of the hunt, but I hadn't counted on Albert being our tour guide.
It might have been just luck but I'm going with knowledge and experience as after just a couple of hours we'd had our first sighting. It was not quite the vibrant green sky I'd envisaged, until Albert expertly showed us how to use our iPhone to get the best pictures and then the Aurora came alive. Just a short while later he found another gap in the clouds and this time we had over an hour of dancing lights, it was magical.
Sat around a warming fire with homemade soup, decadent hot chocolate, and delicious cookies finished off the evening perfectly.
It might be one of the more expensive tours but it was worth every penny. Travelling with a smaller group meant we could be more responsive, stops could be quicker, and the whole evening felt a bit more personal. Albert was attentive in making sure we all had what we needed to fully enjoy our evening, and he certainly knew how to hunt the elusive Aurora Borealis. Thank you Albert.

Hello! Thank you for taking your time and leaving us this amazing and detailed feedback. As we say in Wandering Owl's nest - chances are always there for eager chasers! Some nights are more challenging than other, but thanks to our years of experience in the region and local knowledge, we know where to take our guests to maximise their chances of seeing amazing aurora dance. Going in a smaller group allows us to go to really remote locations, and far away from Tromsø if that's where the gaps in the sky are. Thank you for choosing Wandering Owl and appreciating our efforts in making every night with us a memorable experience!

I am ecstatic that we chose to do this excursion. We were a little apprehensive given how much it costs and the odds of actually seeing the Northern lights but it was a risk we wanted to take. We did a lot of research on the best Northern Lights excursion and this came out on top for us - and it did not disappoint.

First of all, the main thing I would say it do not get too preoccupied with the weather in Tromso on the night. It was incredible cloudy the night we had our excursion but this is irrelevant because the tour operators research the best spots throughout the day, monitoring the weather and continuing to do just that whilst we travelled to the end destination.

We drove well over two hours (toilet stop an hour in) to a beautiful lake and luckily for us we didn’t have to venture into Finland, which is the last resort. We stopped several times so that our guide Wojtek could hop out and check the strength of the lights through his camera and assess if it was the spot for us. Along the way, Wojtek explained the origins and make up of the lights to us, including how they’re measured in strength.

We ended up sitting by a beautiful lake for over 3 hours, around a (very welcome!) campfire, and were served hot soup, hot chocolate and biscuits. The lights themselves literally came out of no where after 2 hours and we were treated to an incredible show! We also had professional photos taken throughout, which are fabulous compared to what a basic iPhone camera achieves. We did have to wade through around 2ft of untouched snow to get to the lake, and we sat in -23 degrees; even with thermal suits on it was still incomprehensible cold! As long as your healthy/ fit and happy to be cold, I would encourage you to do this tour!

I can not recommend Wojtek and the Wandering Owl team enough. It was an experience we’ll never forget - thank you!

Hello KM02194, We are thrilled to hear that risk you've taken paid off :). We appreciate that you have taken time to describe in details your tour with Wojciech. No doubt, your feedback is valuable not only for us but for future guests too. Regardless the environmental conditions, our guides always put a tremendous amount of effort into finding clear skies and showing our guests breathtaking northern lights. But it's not our only goal! Our guides know many secret, beautiful spots where we can have cozy campfire. Campfire in the wilderness along with hot homemade soup, chocolate and biscuits is and experience itself. Great that you loved photos from Wojciech. he is very passionate and skilled photographer. It is hard to capture beauty on northern lights with a phone camera or with no experience in night photography, but no worries, we our guides do it for you :). We really hope that you have fallen in love with the Arctic and decide to visit again!

We were picked up by minibus outside the Scandic Ishavshotel with a group of about 12 people. From the moment we left, our guide Karolis was polite and helpful, explaining what to expect from the evening and giving us interesting facts as we made our way out of Tromso.

We drove around for about an hour, made a couple of potential spots to see the northern lights but the conditions were not quite right. We stopped at one place and there were at least 5 other tours, so Karolis suggested we carried on to find a less busy area. About 10 mins later we reached a good spot so the minibus parked up and we put on the snow boots and snow suit that was provided (you must send your shoe and suit size before arriving, this is asked for when you book).

Whilst we were suiting up Karolis went for a look for the northern lights and found them! At first they were too pale to see with your eyes but could see them through a picture Karolis had taken. We quickly set up our cameras (tripods were provided) with the help of Karolis and quickly took some photos (we borrowed a camera and are definitely beginners!). Thanks to the help with the set up of the camera, we had some great pictures of the lights. Karolis also patiently took photos of everyone with the northern lights in the background. These were sent to us all via email a few days after the tour and we were very pleased with the results (see photos).

For about the next half an hour the lights got stronger and stronger and we could see them dancing across the sky. It was nothing like I imagined but so much better! Obviously the weather conditions and light activity need to be right to see the lights, but the night started very snowy and stormy and we are so grateful for the effort Karolis put into finding the right spot. It felt like he really went the extra mile to find the best spot. What was even better was that we were the only group in the spot so we had the whole area to ourselves.

As the snow clouds started to cover, the bonfire was set up for us to sit down and enjoy a hot drink and reindeer stew with bread. It was very cold so we ate very quickly but had a great time hearing about the history of Tromso and the northern lights. Karolis was very knowledgable, we couldn’t have asked for a better guide.

I highly recommend Wandering Owl for the effort and professionalism that went into the tour. The minibus was comfy, we travelled no more than an hour from the centre of Tromso and both Karolis and the driver were polite, knowledgeable and very easy to talk to.

Many thanks to Karolis for making this an unforgettable experience.

Hello Plums28, What a great and detailed feedback, thank you for taking your time to write it. No doubt it will be more than useful to future travelers! Environmental conditions in the Arctic can be quite challenging sometimes and it can take a lot of time and effort to find aurora and see the show. Therefore, our guides experience and dedication are extremely important and valuable for us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed time on the tour with Karolis and had a chance to witness some northern lights dancing in the sky! We are also proud of our guides being skilled and creative photographers. We include professional pictures taken by guides in every tour as well as homemade soups, biscuits and warm drinks (we love hot chocolate most of all!) Thank you again for the lovely feedback! Hoping to see you in Norway again.

Where do we start! We kept our expectations low as you never know what to expect with the changing weather conditions.

But Virgil Reglioni from the Wandering Owl is an insane genius when it comes to chasing the lights. We felt very lucky that we had an award winning photographer guide us. The guy is very passionate and loves what he does, and we immediately trusted him.

The Wandering Owl are flexible and very accommodating. They even advised us to book on a different night as weather conditions would’ve been better the next night.

The experience included a bonfire, which kept us warm and we were served homemade cookies and soup. The food were very homey and cozy.

Thanks guys, and thank you Virgil. This was definitely the highlight of our honeymoon :)! We won’t forget this experience.

We booked this 8 hour Northern Lights tour (6:00 pm to 2:00am) based on Trip Advisor reviews of Wandering Owl. We were not disappointed. Our guide, Karolis was very knowledgeable, prepared and worked hard to give us the best Northern Lights experience despite challenging weather conditions. He constantly monitored the weather to find openings for the lights. He not only found the lights, but provided tripods for cameras, set up cameras for the difficult conditions and took excellent photos with his own camera which were then posted for our use online. He also took us to a deserted beach on a fjord, lit a fire and gave us a nice hot meal. It was truly a memorable experience and one we would highly recommend. Note: Although we dressed for the cold weather, Wandering Owl provided cold weather suits which fit over our own and we're glad we used them.

What a night! Van of eight plus Ellie the guide, travelled just 40 mins from Tromsø, parked up in a lay-by and got into snow suits and boots, head torches ready to hunt Aurora. Well we didn’t have to wait long… as we were getting kitted up it started to appear above us and by the time we’d got ourselves 100m or so from the road we were enjoying a fantastic light display. Got a decent 1-1.5h of activity and blurry photos (doesn’t matter, I took photos in my mind!), Ellie set up a fire and we had soup, hot chocolate and biscuits.
Everyone was thrilled with the evening, great to have such a small group and looking forward to seeing the pro shots!

Amazing experience, great way to start the year!
The lights were amazing, the snow, the sea, everything turned green and we were screaming with joy!
Our guide Karolis was so great! Such a nice guy, smiling and keeping everything under control, it was good to have him there. It made it a good group experience as well. He took amazing pictures of the sky and of each of us, and we got the pictures a day after the safari. He gave us warmer clothes as well.
After seeing the lights our guide set up a bonfire, very organized, and we had a delicious lentil soup and vegan hot chocolate with home made cookies by the fire, as he was telling us stories and legends and we bonded with the group!
It was just a perfect, magical night.
