Travel up Mauna Kea for a small-group sunset and stargazing tour by luxury 4WD van. Leave the off-road drive to the pros, and ride from Kona or Waikoloa to a historic Hawaiian ranch for a picnic dinner. Continue to the Big Island's tallest peak for sunset, then use powerful telescopes to observe constellations from Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. Hear commentary from your guide, and keep warm with the provided jackets and hot chocolate.
What to Expect

Meet your guide at a central location in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa, then relax in the deluxe 4WD van as your small group heads to a ranch at the base of Mauna Kea.

At the ranch, sit down for a hot picnic-style dinner (sample menu under Itinerary below). After dinner, your guide provides a warm jacket with hood to help keep you warm at the Mauna Kea summit. Return to the van for the ascent to the summit, learning from your guide about the Big Island's natural and cultural history along the way.

When you reach the summit, enjoy views of the sunset, Mauna Loa, the Haleakala volcano on Maui, and other landmarks. Then drive down to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at 9,000 feet (2,743 meters), home to more than a dozen international observatories that draw scientists from around the world.

Your guide sets up a telescope and provides an astronomy lesson as you star gaze. Stay warm with hot drinks and dessert before returning to Kona at the end of your tour.

The best tour guide ever!

We debated making the trip to Mauna Kea on our own, since we had rented a 4-wheel drive vehicle. We were so happy that we decided to take the tour instead. Our guide, Heraldo Herrington, was amazing. He hadn't just memorized a detailed script: He...More

Bucket list checkoff! Wonderful tour

My hubby has wanted to visit the Summit of Mauna Kea for years! So about 2 years ago we started planning this trip, and chose the dates we did because the moon would be barely visible and the night sky wouldn't have to compete with...More

This was one of my favorite experiences on the big Island. Nothing but praise for Hawaii Forest and Trail. The sunset was spectacular and the star gazing is now something I want to do again. A great part of the experience was getting to know...More

Our bus carried about a dozen passengers and we had 1 telescope. All who wanted got a turn looking at each celestial object. AND we each got a warm brownie with hot cocoa.

We went last month and my son is 16. They didn’t ask for any documentation.
