About
Two Iconic Territory Stories in One Iconic Location One started Territory operations in 1939, the other, occurred in 1942 as an act of aggression unparalleled on Australian soil. Both forged the resolve and resilience of the people who live in Australia's Northern Territory. The first iconic story is the Royal Flying Doctor Service, affectionately known throughout Australia as the RFDS. Founded by the Reverend John Flynn, it began its aero medical operations in the Northern Territory in 1939. The second iconic story featured is the Bombing of Darwin on 19th February 1942. The bombing of the harbour brought destruction to the city of Darwin, and many of the experiences and stories of what happened that day. This facility sits on the iconic location of Stokes Hill Wharf which was bombed during the raid on 19th February 1942.

An amazing set up at the Wharf Precinct. So much information, with the RFDS story and the Bombing of Darwin Harbour. View the Bombing with a Virtual Reality mask, so confronting but amazing. The RFDS plane that you can go onboard is awesome, so little room with so much equipment utilising every inch of the plane. 2 hologram film presentations for RFDS & the Bombing. Great selection of souvenirs in the shop. All the staff are most obliging & give lots of information. First class tourist attraction.

Four day weekend with our city born and bred granddaughter. Felt it very important she knew the background and current need for this wonderful service and the impact it makes for our country friends. We were greeted by friendly staff and with their guidance through the facility, saw, heard and viewed all aspects. The virtual and visual bombing displays of Darwin during World War 2 were created to make us feel as though we were there on that day. It certainly did that! I would have to say this facility is up there with the very best and we’ve visited other countries and seen many exhibits.

If you are visiting Darwin this is well worth a visit. The whole family enjoyed seeing the Hologram Presentations and using the VR sets. Being able to go inside the RFDS play was great. Overall, it was interesting and informative for the whole family. Despite some resistance from the kids about heading to “another museum” before we went, they both thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d certainly recommend it for families.

Another must viewing when in Darwin. I really got to experience how vital the Royal Flying Doctor Service is to the outback of this vast country, it was amazing. Loved taking off in the plane through the virtual reality eye glasses provided.
We also experienced the effects of the Japanese bombing over the harbour and city through a short video and again through the virtual reality eye glasses.
Staff were very helpful and friendly and there to help.
I was very impressed by the whole display.

An amazing experience, with the option to visit for as long as you like. The RFDS does an amazing job and to see the outfitted aircraft-inside and out- and experience the holograms, bombing of Darwin and Virtual Reality experiences was absolutely incredible. The staff couldn’t have been kinder and more helpful. Highly recommend this experience, whether you have a short or an extended time to visit. Don’t miss it. Thank you.

A MUST SEE! We visited one afternoon close to closing time and was given a return ticket for a couple of days later. OMG! I'm so glad we went back to see the virtual experience of the Bombing of Darwin. It was SO REAL. I felt as if I was there on that fateful day on 19th February 1942. It was so real and SO sad.
My partner was overome with emotion. Now he understands why his father (who was there at the time), was hospitalised and later dismissed due being mentally unfit for duty from the Army. Seeing this experience put it all in perspective for him and he was abble to understand why his father (and many other men) couldnt talk about their time serving in Darwin.

Absolutely brilliant friendly staff excellent experience worth every cent. The whole experience of the war coming to Darwin was moving and incredibly realistic. The brilliant work the RFDS Do is also shown in a way that you can understand the diversity and strength of our Pilots, Drs and Nurses. Overall just sensational. A MUST DO if in Darwin.
