Highlights
Get the most from Moreton Island on a tour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast
Swap self-drive for a guide and 4WD to take you to the island’s best bits
Snorkel and kayak at Tangalooma Wrecks and surf the dunes by sand board
Includes picnic, equipment, and transfers; with entry fees and ferry extra
What to expect
After morning pickup from either Brisbane or the Gold Coast, catch the ferry to Moreton Island. You might spot dolphins, migrating humpback whales, and other marine animals on the way to Moreton Island. Moreton Island is the third-largest sand island in the world. Travel by sturdy 4WD-vehicle along the sandy beach to Tangalooma Wrecks where you have a choice of activities. Snorkel with your guide among the Tangalooma Wrecks, 15 ships that were purposely scuttled to create a break wall, now inhabited by colorful corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and other critters. Alternatively, use provided transparent bodyboards to take a look at the reef, or stay dry and enjoy the beach. Refuel with a picnic lunch served on the beach, then hop into a transparent kayak and follow your guide on a tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks, watching an array of fish swim underneath your kayak. Swap the sea for the sand as your guide steers your 4WD inland to reach the sand dunes. There, try sandboarding, an exhilarating sport that is comparable to tobogganing. Some people can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (50 kph) while zipping down the dunes. If time allows after sandboarding, return to Tangalooma Beach for a swim before reboarding the ferry. Your tour ends with return to your starting point in Brisbane or the Gold Coast in the evening. (Please note: if conditions are unfavorable for snorkeling and kayaking, a 4WD island tour will be substituted).

  • 1
    Moreton Island
Stop: 6 hours - Admission excluded
In the morning, your 4WD coach picks you up from the Gold Coast or Brisbane, then travels to the ferry to Moreton Island. During the 75-minute ferry ride across Moreton Bay, take in views from the deck or cabin, keep an eye out for dolphins and other marine life. When you reach the island, your 4WD-vehicle drives along the sand to the Tangalooma Wrecks where you have several options for beachside fun. Follow your guide on a snorkeling tour of the famous shipwrecks; the 15 vessels were purposely sunk here to create a breakwall. This resulting reef is home to colorful corals, tropical fish, trevally, yellowtail, wobbegong, kingfish and more. If snorkeling doesn’t appeal to you, use the provided transparent bodyboards to paddle in search of turtles, reef fish, coral and other critters, or simply relax on the white-sand beach. After the snorkel tour, your guide serves a picnic lunch before leading a tour on transparent kayaks to explore the Tangalooma Wrecks. Stay dry as you view an amazing array of fish right below your kayak. (Please note that a 4WD tour around the island will replace the snorkeling and kayaking if conditions are unfavorable). Next, hang on tight as your driver takes your 4WD on rough inland tracks to tall sand dunes that are ideal for sandboarding, a fun, high-adrenaline activity comparable to tobogganing. It is possible to reach speeds of up to 30 mphr (50 kph) as you zip down the dunes. After sandboarding, return to the coast and enjoy a swim at Tangalooma Beach (if time allows). Then catch the ferry back to the mainland and reach Brisbane or the Gold Coast in the evening.

A must do
Mar 2021 • Couples
Such a great day all round! Definitely a must do if in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Friendly, accommodating staff, sandboarding was a blast, the kayaking was so much fun and the snorkelling is a highlight for sure. Ret knew all the spots to see the most and make the most out of your snorkelling experience and josh set up a delicious lunch and helped out everyone from the beginners to the experienced. Thanks team, would 100% recommend

Outstanding day trip - particularly the snorkelling
Nov 2020
A nice 4WD trip then the fastest sandboarding that I've done followed by a picnic lunch opposite the wrecks. Probably the best snorkelling I've ever done and finishing with the cool kayaks. Chris and 'Bones' were great tour guides!

10/10 would do again, especially snorkelling.
Oct 2020 • Friends
Snorkelling was amaaaazing, there are so many fish and getting so close to the coral wrecks was wild. The guide Chris made sure we had a fab time. Sand-boarding was so much fun and worth it, but definitely requires a certain level of fitness to climb that much soft sand. Came home happily exhausted and feeling like it had been a very full day. 10/10 would do again and will recommend.
