Port Arthur Tour from Hobart
From US$101.89
Overview
Get an in-depth tour of the UNESCO-listed Port Arthur Historic Site on this day trip from Hobart. History buffs will love learning about the history of the Australian convict site on an excursion designed to allow as much time and in-depth learning about the area in a single day. Many tours of Tasmania include a brief stop in Port Arthur, but this one provides deep exploration and plenty of time to ask questions.
What to Expect
Relax on the scenic drive from Hobart to the Tasman Peninsula, which encompasses Norfolk Bay, Eaglehawk Neck, Forestier Peninsula, the Tasman Bridge, and the Pitt wWater Causeway. Enjoy the fact that your guide is driving and worrying about directions as you simply look out the window and snap photos. Depending on the season, drive through the town to Richmond and see the convict-built Richmond Bridge.

Spend a full five hours exploring the Port Arthur UNESCO World Heritage Site, including a walking tour of the seaside penal colony. Learn how and why the area’s most heinous criminals were housed here in 30 restored buildings and accompanying ruins. Highlights include the church, the Commandant’s House, the prison, flour mill, granary, and penitentiary.

Follow up the walking tour with a 30-minute cruise on Carnarvon Bay, which gives different views and photo ops from the water. See the coast of Tasman National Park, including the Devil’s Kitchen, the Isle of the Dead, and Tasman Arch.

Make a lunch stop at the Port Arthur Visitor Center or the nearby Felons (own expense).
