Fun journey along the coast
Dec 2020
Well organised, nice amount of time to stop at the end to check out the shops we went to the brewery loved it, have $10 cash on you for the return shuttle, no eftpos. Delightful and helpful staff. Loved the train pies and scones.

Short Train ride to sea the coast
Feb 2020
We didn't expect much and enjoyed what we got to see. The train ride has comfortable seating and since there was not many on the train, we had good seats to see all the views. They were able to drop us off near the cruise ship, which was about a 10 minute walk.
The train station is beautiful with great photo opportunities.

Hi there Miles D, Thank for you taking the time to leave a review. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the views and visiting the Dunedin Railway Station, it certainly is a beautiful building. The Seasider train journey is a great way for cruise ship passengers to get back to their ship rather than having to take a shuttle from the centre of town, so it's great that you were able to take advantage of this as well. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday and if you are ever back in Dunedin you might like to go on our other train journey - The Taieri Gorge Railway. Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways

Enjoyable train journey
Feb 2020
The beautiful scenery is one reason why one takes the coastal train journey, but the whole experience was enhanced by the knowledgeable comments by the train manager. He had a good sense of humour and it was indeed a trip to remember.

Hi there RICHARDCFF, Thanks for your review :). It's awesome to hear you not only enjoyed the scenery, but also listening to the live onboard commentary along the way. Our team do a great job with this and love sharing the stories of Dunedin and its surrounds with our passengers. If you are ever back in Dunedin we'd love to have you onboard our other main train journey - The Taieri Gorge Railway. Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways

Waste of time
Feb 2020
This tour is a waste of time, as you can see, and stop, at the same views that you drive past to get from port to railway station. The train had just two tired old carriages. The trip is not 2hrs. The coffee, food was indifferent. Too much money for what you get

Hi there RJOJOHN, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed by our Seasider journey. Whilst it does travel near the road from the port to Dunedin for part of the journey, the train ventures much further along the coastline and there are many views that can only be experienced from the rail line. Our heritage carriages usually get great feedback as people enjoy the authenticity and character they add to the journey, so we are sorry to hear you did not enjoy these. Perhaps if you are ever back in town our Taieri Gorge Rail Journey might be more up your alley :). Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways

Snatches of scenery but disappointed overall
Feb 2020
The station is amazing beautiful grounds and incredible building. We boarded our train, a little warning here the steps to get on/off are very steep!!
There were some little snactches of views and the sea, but few and far between, their was a lot of trees and bushes so some of it was just looking at greenery.
On way back you have to swap seats with passengers on other side of train so they can see the views, really disappointed overall, not like the short video on the booking site.

Hi there sprog, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The Dunedin Railway Station is beautiful and we are so pleased to be able to operate our journeys out of the building. The steps are steep for some and we are able to provide help to those who need it when getting on and off the train. We can also offer options for those in wheelchairs on request as well. We're disappointed to hear this journey did not meet your expectations and appreciate your feedback on the video. Perhaps the Taieri Gorge Railway may have been a journey more suited for you, as the scenery is very different and it is a different experience from The Seasider. Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways

A Classic Railway Station.
Feb 2020
The journey starts at the Dunedin railway station. A magnificent building in the style of magnificent railway stations. We arrived by ship in Port Chalmers, and took the shuttle bus provided into Dunedin. ?(About a 20 min ride) leaves a short walk downhill (about 10 mins) to the railway station. Your given a choice of a return bus ticket to /from Port Chalmers to Dunedin or a one way. The train Leaves Dunedin but passes through Port Chalmers on it's way. It will stop and drop you off at Port Chalmers on the way back, leaving you with a short steep, downhill walk to your ship.
The train has a buffet car (Sandwiches, cake, tea, coffee, beer, and wine) don't delay they are in short supply.
A pleasant trip, good scenery, and an entertaining commentary and a rail journey of a couple of hours... I enjoyed it.

Disappointment train ride, blocked views
Feb 2020
Enjoyable train ride but views disrupted from trees/shrubs alongside the rail track that blocked views. Cost more than its worth.

Hi there dio894, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on The Seasider Train Journey. The Seasider does travel through a combination of landscapes including the Otago Harbour, New Zealand bush and then high above the Mapoutahi Cliffs. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the ride but are disappointed to hear you felt it cost more than it was worth. Perhaps our Taieri Gorge Train journey would have been more suited for you :) Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways

The Seasider Rail Trip in Dunedin, New Zealand
Feb 2020 • Couples
My husband and I left on the Seasider rail trip from the Dunedin Railway Station to Waitati. We left at 11.10 am and returned approx 1 pm. Fantastic unspoilt scenery. A shout out to Dave for his friendly manner and informative commentary. The Buffet Car is good also. $70 per adult although I managed to obtain a 20 % voucher through the recent Masters Games. After the journey people received a 10 % discount in the gift/souvenir shop.😁

Hi there kathyrobnz, Thanks for your review! It's great to hear you enjoyed the unspoilt scenery of the journey, it certainly does give you a different view-point than the road. Our staff always do a great job onboard with the commentary and we will pass your feedback onto Dave :). We're glad you were able to explore more of Dunedin with us whilst you were in town for the Masters Games. If you are ever back in the city it'd be great to have you onboard our Taieri Gorge Rail Journey. Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways
