Overview
The UNESCO-listed Milford Sound is the postcard icon of New Zealand’s South Island – a dramatic fjord, ringed by jagged cliffs and cascading waterfalls. This 2-hour cruise checks off all the highlights, affording spectacular views of Bowen Falls, Sinbad Gully, and Mount Pembroke; passing the mighty Mitre Peak; and gliding out along the Tasman Sea coast.
What to Expect
Make your own way to the Milford Sound Visitor Center in the Fiordland National Park to board your boat, then set sail across the startling blue waters of Milford Sound. Keep your camera close to hand as you cruise out across the fjord and admire natural wonders like the 525-foot (160-meter) high Bowen Falls, the striking hanging valley of Sinbad Gully, and the snow-capped peak of Mount Pembroke.

Climb onto your boat’s viewing platform to get a better view of the local wildlife, including colonies of fur seals, pods of dusky dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguins. As you continue towards the Tasman Sea coast, pass beneath the distinctive 5,551-foot (1,692 meter) mountain of Mitre Peak, one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks.

As you turn back into Milford Sound, see the dramatic approach witnessed by the first settlers at the end of the 18th-century, and hear stories about their journey from your guide’s live on-board commentary. After two hours on the water, cruise back to shore and head back to the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, where your tour ends.

Best choice cruise

The day began early with a pick up from Queenstown. We liked this idea so that my husband had a break from driving and could enjoy the scenery. The driver was great and the tour informative. They stopped at places we probably would have missed...More

Amazing cruise!

Apart from being lucky with the Fiordland weather, Mitre Peak Cruises is the one to go on to see Milford Sound. With a smaller boat you do not feel the cruise has been over sold. The driver and drivers mate were very informative about the...More

Amazing Cruise

We flew on Milford Sound Scenic Flights to catch the cruise. This smaller boat is big enough for this trip. It also appears that the dolphins like it too. They were bow-riding and then they performed off the stern for an amazing show. Check out...More

Enjoyed the cruise

It's a small boat with only 2 crews onboard, which was great cause it's not too crowded. Free coffee, tea and hot water on board. It went very close to waterfall, you'll get wet if standing on front deck, but able to see seals, penguins...More

Smallest boat - Mitre Peak - gets you right up to the seals and almost under the waterfall. Great crew. Also the price varies by the time of the day. The afternoon cruises after 3 pm are cheaper. But winter time gets dark... More
