We recently returned from an amazing trip to Belize, where our primary activity was birding. We were fortunate to have Eric Tut as our amazing bird guide. His expertise in identifying and finding birds in the area was incredibly impressive, particularly his skill in hearing particular birds, locating them, and then helping us see them as well. We could be driving down the road with the windows down and he would hear a bird, stop the vehicle, get out and actually find the bird, then help us see it too. His ability to identify birds through vocalization alone was extraordinary!! He was patient when it could have been frustrating because we aren't as used to trying to locate birds in dense foliage. He clearly wanted to help as many of us as possible (in our group of four) to see each bird or birds. During our 5 day trip with Birding in Belize/Paradise Expeditions, we visited multiple places with a variety of habitat in order to see a wider variety of birds. We visited Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Acuacate Lagoon, Spanish Lookout, the Macal River, and Carocol. Eric was very knowledgeable about the Mayan ruins and explained the history and culture of the people. We also stopped at Rio On Pools, where you can swim and cool off.
We loved that it was a family-run operation. Eric's sister Carolita cooked breakfast and dinner for us, and packed us lunches for our expeditions. All the food was fresh and yummy. We particularly enjoyed her fresh tortillas and salsa. We truly enjoyed eating in the lovely open-air dining area with a thatched roof, adjacent to the large deck equipped with porch swings and bird feeders. Everyone in the Tut family made us feel very welcome. If you are at all interested in birding while in Belize, we would highly recommend using Birding in Belize Paradise Expeditions. I cannot imagine a more highly qualified guide.
As an aside, we felt quite comfortable traveling at this time even with the Covid issues. We spent nearly all of our time outdoors and weren't around many people the whole time. Our guide wore his mask all of the time, even outdoors, as did those who helped serve meals. Pro tip - pack bug spray! Lots of bugs means lots of birds, so just be prepared and you'll really enjoy yourself.
Added bonus ... even after we arrived home, Eric has been super helpful while we sort through a thousand photos and try to identify which bird is in each photo. We appreciate his helpfulness even after our trip is over.

Enjoyed my birding trip to Belize except for the second to last day when I became very sick from something I ate.
However, I have to give a shout out to our guide, Jonathan Urbina, who was fantastic. He worked very hard to help me see as many birds as possible during our time together. We saw a total of 268 birds of which 90 were "lifers" for me. He has an incredible ear and he impressed me time and time again with his ability to ID the various songs and calls of birds in the area.
His winning personality and outstanding birding ability made it an unforgettable birding experience.
Thanks, Jonathan!

This was my first post Covid birding trip. I emailed in a list of the birds that I had not yet seen and they crafted a special tour for me. I had a wonderful experience. Eric was my birding guide and he was unbelievably
skilled at finding the birds I wanted to see. The staff at the Crystal Paradise were very friendly and were attentive to my needs. I recommend Paradise Expeditions highly and will return for another adventure in the future. I uploaded some of the rare and/or hard to find birds we saw.

We spent 5 days birding with Eric Tut and we saw 200 species, about 150 of them were life birds for us. I've been birding for 20 years, but without Eric I would have been lucky to see even 25% of the birds that we saw. (There are a lot of leaves to hide behind in Belize.) Eric's ability to locate birds by ear and help you see them is simply amazing and made this an incredibly fun adventure for us. He's also very knowledgeable on Mayan ruins, local culture and other wildlife. He and his family were instant friends to us. The accommodations were comfortable and the food was fresh and delicious. There's nothing better than homemade tortillas under a thatched roof while watching toucans, motmots and tanagers eating just feet away at Crystal Paradise.

I left a review under Crystal Paradise Expeditions, but wanted to pop a note in here as well. As other reviewers have noted, this birding experience has it all. Eric is a master with a teacher's heart. He is incredibly talented and has worked hard to gain the top level of mastery that he has - so impressive. He was so helpful and kind during all of our expedition days. And he knows and shares so much about culture and history too.
Carolita welcomed us each day with delicious food and a friendly, happy greeting. Fresh salsa and tortillas! And spoiled me with papaya! Comfy, clean rooms and beautiful property too.
Jeronie helped us out of a tight spot with our passport. You can see the family pride and love for their work and property. A joy to be there!
Read the other rave reviews and realize they aren't exaggerating and then just book it! You'll be so glad you did!
(Totally COVID smart/safe here. Not a worry at all. We had our own masks, but I'm sure they would have provided one if we needed it.)

I highly recommend Paradise Expeditions, a family-owned business in Belize.
Jeronie Tut planned an excellent one-week birding itinerary for a friend and me.
We visited a number of key spots in Belize including the Crooked Tree Wildlife
Sanctuary and Caracol National Monument. Our guide, Jeronie’s brother, Eric, is
an expert on the birds of Belize and can identify everything by sight and sound.
He made sure that we also observed the birds. Eric was good company and
informative about other wildlife, native plants, local culture, and the status of
conservation in his country. Jeronie also arranged for a knowledgeable
archaeological guide, Mariela, to lead us through the incredible ruins in Tikal
National Park in nearby Guatemala. Accommodation and food were good,
including at the the family’s own lodge near San Ignacio.
A note: visitors to Tikal National Park in May should be prepared for hot
weather. Our night was also very warm as the national park requires all
electricity to be shut off by 9:00 p.m. We were “serenaded” by two clans of
howler monkeys throughout much of the night. The monkeys are misnamed as
they roar not howl.

Hi
Thanks for choosing our birding company during your travels to Belize. Yes it gets warm at night in TIkal in May. We now have battery operated fans that can last all night for those who go on the Tikal Overnight or we can stay at a hotel near the lagoon a 30 mins drive from Tikal. Eric and Mariela both had a great time birding with you all. and making sure you saw the birds.
Glad you had a great time with us in Belize and Guatemala. Great birding

We just got back from a nine day trip photographing raptors with Andy Tut. He has eagle eyes, a great sense of humor and endless energy. It was a private tour for two of us that was the same price you would pay for group tours with many companies.
This was a fantastic experience and we look forward to doing it again next year!

Great birding trip, saw over 300 species in 10 days. The accommodations and food were excellent. Our guide, Eric Tut, was extremely knowledgeable and could find and identify many species from even the smallest vocalization. HOWEVER, he also could be arrogant, condescending, and moody. He had a very high opinion of himself and sometimes it seemed like his main priority was documenting a particular species in order to look good on eBird or to other guides. This was the reason the place did not receive a 5 star recommendation.

Recently my wife and I had the pleasure of spending seven nights at Crystal Paradise Resort, and four days of birding with Paradise Expeditions and our guide, Andy Tut. Both the birding and our accommodations were exceptional, but what made our visit extra special was Andy, his father, and his brothers and sisters themselves. In just a few short days we felt as if we were part of their family. During our last evening, sister Carolita came to our room to announce that Andy had found a very strange, nocturnal bird, a Northern Potoo, and did we want to see it. Here was a family who, on their own personal time, went the extra mile to make sure that our trip was a success. We also want to thank sister Julie, who met us at the airport, and who escorted us to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich. Thanks to all of you at Paradise Expeditions and at Crystal Paradise Resort. We look forward to our next visit in 2022!!

Went on a guided birding tour with Andy Tut. Andy works well with different types of people (we had another person on our trip who was, frankly, very difficult but he did great with them) but most importantly he has a passion for birds. A few times he pushed just a little bit longer at a spot, one which led to a black and white hawk eagle, and the other nothing.
