- 902mirajh00Incredible experienceAbsolutely wonderful, our tour guide Alex was the highlight right next to the views. We loved his energy and enthusiasm. He helped motivate us throughout the kayak and hike and helped us take beautiful pictures of the scenery and a lot of local information about the area. Could not recommend Los Elementos enough!
- Tour39562100Interesting hike but a bit overpricedHike took in scenic countryside & Mayan culture, but felt a bit overpriced for what we did. Hike was very steep. Market was really interesting & fun to go on the back of a pick-up into town.
- tiffannyn00UnforgettableAmazing Day! Alex was our guide and he was great, we kayaked, had lunch in San Juan and then hiked. I was so tired but so happy. The views are STUNNING. Don’t think about it just book it. I’ve already recommended the tour company to a friend. The ease of booking is a nice touch as well!
- X1285TDtravism00An Unrivaled ExperienceThis experience was better than we could have ever expected. Imagine having a close friend from Lake Atitlan who knows the area and people well showing you around for an entire day. We told Alex we wanted him to show us the “must sees” of the Lake and then spent the rest of the day adventuring around the different Pueblos. We did not really want to hike if it meant we wouldn’t make it to some of the Pueblos we wanted to see, but luckily he really curates the experience to be whatever you would want it to be! Every single place we went he had friends and would introduce us to different people along the way including artists, chocolatiers etc. He knows so much about the history and culture and had answers to any questions we had. He was so friendly, made us feel comfortable and known and helped us understand more of the culture of everywhere we were. I would recommend everyone coming to the area book this tour with Alex.
- 921katiel00Walk far with a real Mayan expertFirst, Los Elementos is quick to respond to inquiries which gives it the edge for my business. There are a lot of lakeside tour companies but Lee and Los Elementos are well established. I discovered this trek looking for activities outside of the regular lake-side villages. It didn't disappoint. We booked another tour with them and had several other tours recommended. Plus we also rented kayaks for a morning and kayaked around Santa Cruz and Jaibolito. They are terrific. For this hike: Lee and Mario picked us up at our BnB in Santa Catarina and we drove close to an hour north of Solola where we hiked a short distance down into a labyrinth area. Within a short period of time we met the labyrinth developer, Vincent Stanzione, who has lived in Atitlan area for a long long time, tho not of mayan descent. He's an author and researcher and for the project of the labryrinth, he had local friends help him as a covid project to make mounds and other shapes (like snakes). Vincent spent hours with us answering questions and offering his opinions on life around the lake. I had read one of his books in prep for our time together. He's a humble thinker who cares so much about sharing what he's been given. I highly encourage this walk/hike 1) If you like and can withstand far distance hikes. It was the rainy season and it did start raining on our walk back. You probably wouldn't enjoy this excursion if you aren't inquisitive about Mayan history or life and if you don't like walking. 2) Come with your own questions about what you've read or understood about Lake Atitlan and/or Mayan culture. 3) Dress in layers - the forest can be colder but the hot sun will be too much for a jacket. 4) Bring a snack or sack lunch and for sure a water bottle. We were glad a delicoius light lunch was provided by Lee! 5) Block off about 6-7 hours or be very specific about what time you need to return. Vincent will never run out of things to talk about and your goal on the hike is to get to the over-look point way above the clouds overlooking the lake. This can take a few hours. The hike itself is mostly flat with some ups and downs but you're going to want good hiking shoes. Both my partner and I really enjoyed all the time with Lee and Vincent and got to see parts of the Mayan world we would have never seen otherwise. My partner called it Forest Bathing. Including the drive, you will go up around 2,000 feet from where you start!
- C5245ZYmegane00Well worth the moneyWe had a late start due to pick up issues and waiting for our ferry, but Mario was an excellent guide and catered our day to activities we wanted to do! He even took us to a local fresh market after our kayaking upon request!
- MiaMiyahfya00Very much RecommendAbsolutely loved the tour and our main tour guide GeanCarlos. All the guides were very attentive and nice. They went above and beyond to make sure our needs and expectations were met. I would definitely recommend. Tour guides are also fluent in English as well as Spanish which was great. I honestly can’t think of a bad thing to say about this place!
- rrustafssn00Great day and guideBeautiful scenery and a hike. A great way to spend the day on Lago Atitlan. Antonio was a great guide, always enthusiastic and thoughtful. He also shared with us some words in the local Mayan language.
- jodiann2400Amazing Upper Mayan Trail Experience with Alex, Diego, and Antonio! This was such an amazing experience for our group of 4 women from the US. Alex, Antonio, and Diego had us laughing all the way up the trail. It was a somewhat challenging hike, but they made it so enjoyable. We also got to visit a market, have a traditional lunch, and visit a sacred cave. I won't ruin all the surprises, but I will say that this was one of the best hikes I have ever experienced. If you enjoy hiking and are somewhat fit, I 100% recommend this!
- saveri_1200Excellent private tour of San Juan La LagunaWe had an excellent private tour with Alex to San Juan La Laguna on Lake Atitlan. The tour on a Tuesday was arranged on the Sunday afternoon before via Whatsapp. We had a payment link by Monday morning. And the information that Alex our guide would actually meet us at our hotel in Panajachel (an added bonus, since we thought we would be meeting the guide in San Juan) was provided by Monday afternoon. Our interest was in exploring Maya culture. Alex was Mayan himself and was a fund of information as we explored San Juan extensively. We could not have been happier with our experience overall and had Alex to thank for it.
- fluffybernard00Super nice! Can recommendReally nice cooking class and the teacher was great at explaining and teaching. The food was so nice!
- selmamasi_00Must do in Lake AtitlanGreat Experience with the really nice chef Alfredo! Can only recommend this to anyone visiting Lake Atitlan. The food we made was delicious!
- JulieR17171700Excellent guide & driverAlex had extensive knowledge of the area, it's history and of the Mayan people.I love a tour that teaches me new things. Highly recommend.
- aleguevcer00Sweet and Sour tourVery tough to write a review when we had so much fun and at the same time the tour did not complied with our expectations. Let me explain, On the plus side Mario was an awesome guide, very attentive and well versed in the local customs and traditions, positive attitude and very friendly, the town of San Juan is wonderful, many very entertaining activities to enjoy. On the down side, bicycles were in terrible condition and one of our party (we were 6) could not participate in cycling because tour operator did not provided an adequate bicycle for her small size even when days before the tour we were asked about our measurements (weight and height), ¿why did you asked for this information if you where not to be careful to provide appropriate-sized bicycles? In the end our friend had to skip cycling and go directly to the town of San Juan.
- suehI3180YT00Magical sunriseOur guide, Mario, scooped us in Pana at 3:30 am and with a driver safely delivered us in the dark to the start of our hike. He led us up the short but steep path, and we experienced a magical sunrise from above the clouds.

This was a beautiful sacred experience. There was great communication with the company and the translator who picked me up at my hotel, the car was comfortable. We drove a bit and then took a small hike down to the beautiful cave. The Shaman was a woman and she created a beautiful experience, prayed for me and build an altar and fire. She also relayed information she received from the Mayan God and gave me some advice. As others said, it was powerful to hear my name being spoken as she prayed. The cave is very interesting as many people come to hold ceremony here every day and there are remnants of their ceremonies (there was a dead chicken left behind from a separate ceremony earlier in the day - for those who are squeamish) No chickens are used in this ceremony though!
I found it to be one of my favorite experiences in Guatemala and I'm so grateful for the company making this connection for us travelers. I wish they shared what ratio of the price goes to the Shaman and guide, just to know the ethics about the company. The hike out is a bit challenging but it's brief and you can go slow. Highly recommend!

I did the private Mayan shaman ceremony in a sacred cave. It's advertised that you take a chicken bus up to the cave and your guide will explain the ceremony and the caves as well as the Mayan calendar and you will receive your Mayan horoscope.hen a shaman will do a ceremony based on one of 5 topics: healing, protection, safe travels, cleansing of bad energy, or insight into challenges in your life.
I will start by saying the location and the cave itself were amazing and the shaman was great. He was professional and and I felt a powerful energy during and after the experience.
My 3 stars is for the guide and what I feel is a misleading description of the tour. First off, I was given a location to meet my guide, who was not there at the time. I asked someone nearby who brought me to him (he was sitting in his car). We then drove to the cave (no chicken bus, which might be a pro for you but I was looking forward to it).
The ceremony is done completely in a local language and Spanish. If you do not speak fluent Spanish, do not do this tour. My Spanish is intermediate and I had difficulty understanding the shaman, when I asked the guide to help translate, he completely mistranslated what was said. He also wasn't able to answer any of my questions (in Spanish or English) about the cave, horoscope, or ceremony. It felt more like he was a driver than a guide.
The owner was very responsive when booking/taking my money, but when I had a follow-up question about the horoscope reading, she became unresponsive. I then received a Whatsapp message that was copied from google about my sign. For $150 private tour, this seemed like I was ripped off a bit.
If you're interested in this experience, book with another company or ask around for a local shaman and book yourself.

I would like to start off and mention what an incredible tour guy we had!! Mario exceeded my expectation in every sort of way possible. One hour prior to my tour i had a car accident on may down to Panajachel. he accommodated my entire family with rescheduling our trip picking us and dropping us off. In the mist of all issues he was a helping hand!!!
As far as the actual tour it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience, i would recommend this trip if your into spirituality if your a believer and if you fully immerse yourself in the experience. I shed a few tears because i felt a strong connection with his reading/ cleanse. I traveled with 2 teenage children and they also felt this was a memorable experience something different. Some of the other adventures in Panajachel we had already done in other places so we were definitely interested in this type of tour. the readings were spot on !!!! 10 out ten
I can not give enough credit to my tour guide .......exceptional

This was an incredibly sacred experience that goes beyond words. The whole process was deep, thoughtful, and powerful. Our guide, Alex, was so kind and informative. His part in the ceremony truly made this memory one I will not soon forget. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that I cannot recommend this trip highly enough.

This experience was a highlight of my trip! Our guide was so kind and taught us so much about the mayan culture and what this experience would be like. We opted for the shaman and he did not disappoint! It started with a ride on a chicken bus, then a short hike to take us to a black cave with an incredible view. Our shaman asked for our intentions and he blessed us for protection, good luck, and then answered our intentions. He told us according to the mayan calendar what our birthdate means and the positive and negative attributes of this meaning and much more, including ancestoral readings and slight future expectations and how to work on things you may struggle with. PREPARE TO GET DIRTY! As the shaman did the fire the ash would often fall on us (not painful, just black and dirty).

My husband and I enjoyed our tour. It was an educational, authentic, and immersive look into Mayan ceremonies. Mario, our guide, seemed very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. The description of the tour is misleading/confusing, though, as it states that the tour includes watching a “fire-cleansing ceremony performed by a local shaman,” and it’s not until you try to reserve the tour that it tells you, you have to pay extra to include a shaman/fire ceremony, in addition if you choose to pay extra, you also need to cover the cost of the ceremony supplies, based on what I read on other reviews (we didn’t make it that far, as we chose to go without it). We got lucky and were able to witness several ceremonies that were taking place the day of our tour, but it could’ve been a visit to an empty site otherwise.

Thank you for booking this experience with us. And thank you for your honest feedback. While we do not guarantee that each guest will see the local shamans at the caves, it happens almost every time. With either option, you are visiting an area that is sacred to the Maya, and not a tourist destination. We are happy that we can offer an authentic insight into the Mayan culture and spiritual beliefs with out it being touristic.

Meet Lee and pick-up another couple and headed up to San Jorge for a great adventure. Visited a Maximon in the village, then bought some candles and incense and headed for the secret caves. The first cave we visited a Mayan ceremony was going on and we were advised that they had "explosives" in the fire. After the "priest" caused them to explode, we entered the cave to see the offerings. We then headed to a second sacred cave and performed our own ceremony. Morning was topped off by a short hike up to Eagle's Nest. Very educational and authentic.

This is a fully immersive experience that connects you to the world of ancient Mayan rituals and insights into the Cosmovision. The sacred cave the ceremony was performed in had a great view over the lake but was a little difficult to access. The shaman chanted blessings and made offerings for just over an hour. To hear your name called and the fire pop and burn brighter, was a definitely a highlight. During the ceremony the shaman poured drops alcohol over our heads and urged us to stand in the smoke from the fire. After the ceremony the shaman then relayed the messages she received for each person to help guide you in life.

Hi-
I’m trying to book a tour for 7 people on Monday 4/1 at 3pm.. everything I got to check out it has the date as Sunday 3/31. It’s never says Monday 4/1 is not available. Can I book mon 4/1 at 3pm for 7 people? Will there be the maya ceremony at that time of the day? We could come earlier if need be on 4/1 if we could see the ceremony. Thank you!

I don’t actually work for or run a tour company in Guatemala. I travel there 1-2 times a year and have been to the sacred caves outside of San Jorge multiple times. I can tell you that there is rarely a scheduled ceremony, unless it is a significant day on the Mayan calendar. The first time I went there was 1 Shamen performing a ceremony for a few people. The 2nd time I went there was nothing happening at the caves. Our guide was a Shamen and he performed a ceremony for us. The 3rd time I went was last September on Dia de Agua, a very important day on the Mayan calendar. The caves were packed. At least a dozen different Shamen all performing various ceremonies based on the needs of the people. I am sorry there isn’t something more concrete but the Mayans are more spiritual rather than religious in my experience(those who haven’t been converted to Christianity) which doesn’t require service at 10 on Sunday. There is always a chance someone will need spiritual healing and they go there with a Shamen for the ceremonies. Each area is for different ceremonies. One cave is used to remove the bad spirit or things in your life. Another is used to bring the good into your life, health, fortune, children etc. there are some open areas they perform the ceremonies which if you explore around the area a little you will find the sites that ceremonies have been held at if none are going on when you go. I hope that helps a little. I’ll be in Panajachel 3/23-3/27, just before you it looks like. But if you’re there while I am I would be happy to meet and maybe help you further with your experience.

Do you pick up from Antigua?
rfaith3
Oconomowoc, WI9 contributions
I did not. I was staying in Panajachel which is only 4km from San Jorge where this particular ceremonial site is located. I imagine you could get picked up from Antigua for this experience. I would check with Elizabeth Bell tours which is based in Antigua. She has all kinds of cultural activities and a great walking tour of Antigua. If you do the walking tour make sure you have Elizabeth herself guide the tour. She is amazing and her knowledge of Guatemala it’s history and culture is probably the best of any foreigner living in Guatemala.
Hi There - Can you confirm how long this tour is and how to confirm a departure time and location to meet as we will be coming from a different part of that lake that morning. Thank you in advance!
rfaith3
Oconomowoc, WI9 contributions
I couldn’t see all of the question. If you work with Elizabeth Bell tours out of Antigua, she can set up pick up and everything from a logistics standpoint. Otherwise there are no real scheduled times for tours as these caves sit on the side of a mountain and you hike to them. Often there are ceremonies but I have been when there was nothing happening at the caves too. One of the companies out of San Juan can pick up in Panajachel by the church and you can chicken bus the 4km to San Jorge or make other arrangements. You could even go without a guide if you knew where the trail to the cave starts from the main road.
