What to expect
  • Paddle deep into the heart of the island on this kayaking Kauai adventure, all the way to the shadow of Mt Wai'ale'ale. After an easy paddle upstream, you'll tie your kayaks to a tree and take a somewhat rugged and very beautiful 1 mile (1.6km) hike to a dramatic 100' (30 meter) waterfall. Sit on some big basalt boulders at the bottom of the pool and savor a delicious picnic lunch while enjoying the stunning scenery that surrounds you. Then, hike back down to the ruddered tandem open cockpit kayaks for some more fun paddling! As you pass through this spectacular and interesting valley by kayak and on foot, your guide will be sharing the mana'o (knowledge) of the island. You'll be filled in on the history of ancient Kauai and how the Ali'i (royalty) and Maka'ainana (common people) lived and played here long ago. You'll learn about the unique and unusual medicinal and food plants that inhabit Kauai's Wailua River Valley, as well as identifying many beautiful ornamental plants, both native and introduced. All this will take place as you get to know each other and have some laughs in this incredible setting. The return part of this kayaking Kauai tour is downstream, but into the trade winds, giving you a bit of a workout on this leg of the journey. If you don't mind a bit of exercise, this tour will be the one for you! With swimming holes and native exotic botanical wonders, the Wailua truly is a fantasy world of Hawaiian deep jungle scenery.

Shout out to Brian
Jul 2021
This was a fun, easygoing kayak trip up the river and a really cool jungle hike that included stream crossings to the falls. I can't say enough good things about Brian. He had a great attitude, was super friendly and is what made this extra memorable for us. I'm an avid hiker and even though the trail was pretty easy and fairly short, it was beautiful and unique (albeit muddy, but hey it rains a lot here so no worries). Brian showed us lots of cool stuff about the plants along the way, and even wove a short length of rope from strips of plant stalks he found along the trail as we walked -- skills! We went on a really high traffic day, so the trail and the falls were pretty crowded, just fyi. Once at the falls he helped everyone get pics, and gave us plenty of time to hang out and eat a delicious lunch. Such a great time. On a side note, when we called to confirm the meeting time/location that morning, the young lady who helped us was super nice, too.

Lost money
Jul 2021 • Couples
So when you book the tours online that say 7:45 am, you should know that they don’t start until 9. This isn’t mentioned upfront or in the confirmation emails. When the new start time conflicted with other activities they refused a refund because we were within the window of no cancellations. Lost a good deal of money that way. Know that ahead of time.

Aloha Patrick and Lauren, I am very sorry you had a scheduling conflict. Check in time is usually earlier than actual start time for most tours. My sincere apologies for that not being clear in the information sent to you. We value your input. Mahalo.

Wonderful family adventure
Had an absolutely wonderful experience kayaking and hiking with The family. Our guide Bruce was a rockstar and frankly made the adventure even better than the beautiful surroundings. It was an unforgettable trip for my wife and kids.

A Great trip!
Jun 2021
Nice easy kayaking, lots of chatting with other guests. Mitch and Noah were kind and easy going, a pleasure the whole time. On the hike Mitch offered great commentary on the history and plants. THEN, the rope swing into the river pool was just excellent fun. Couldn't be happier with the trip. Thanks so much.

Are guides Bruce and Brian were awesome. They took care everything and made sure we had a great time. Not only was the kayak and the hike up to the waterfall was spectacular, but Bruce and Brian made sure we were well taken care of and taught us a lot about the island of kauai. Super fun excursion I highly recommended to anyone visiting the island of Kauai. Thank you Bruce and Brian. Mahalo!

A well-designed kayak and hiking adventure
Mar 2020
My wife booked this tour, knowing that it required exertion. I’m a hiker, so that part was second nature. But I am afraid of water and had only kayaked once before, in a still lake. So river kayaking was new and fearful to me.

I had already decided that I would wear a life vest. I was the only one who did, but our guide Elvis encouraged us to do whatever would make us more comfortable. I even forgot I was wearing one.

Elvis gave us some pointers on how to paddle and how to steer the canoe. As the heavier partner, I was in the back of our canoe, responsible for steering.

We were given backpack dry bags, which contained our lunches. I had brought my own dry bag, not knowing that one with backpack straps would be furnished. Too late, I realized why others were carrying almost nothing with them. One thing that we brought along turned out to be a great idea. We had waterproof pouches for our phones, which featured necklace straps. So while kayaking, we were able to set down our paddles briefly, take pictures, then put our phones away, keeping them accessible but dry.

We paddled upstream, twelve people in six kayaks, to the north fork Wailua River, where we beached the kayaks and began the hike. The hike was muddy, and required wading a river that was more than knee deep, with strong current. Elvis coached us in how to use the fixed line rope that spanned the river, and we all crossed without incident. Elvis revealed that Outfitters Kauai had been monitoring the river conditions closely, ready to cancel the trip if needed.

Along the hike, Elvis pointed out types of plants, an invasive albizia tree, and evidence of recent pig digging.

At Secret Falls, we found our own places to sit and eat lunch. Elvis told us where he would be, and offered to take photos for any of us. The pictures we got from him later were quite good.

The return to the harbor was smooth and uneventful. Elvis was a fantastic guide, and helped make the experience a very enjoyable one.

Note: If you are staying in Kapa’a, you do not need to drive to Poipu; you can meet the Outfitters Kauai van at the Smith’s Tropical Paradise parking lot, a short distance upstream from the boat launch on the Wailua River.

Aloha KendianaJones, Nothing says more than a repeat customer. So glad you could join us for a second adventure. Elvis is fantastic. He's 5 star all the way. You made it out on one of the last days before we stopped operations due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Please keep in touch. We don't know when, but we WILL be back. Mahalo for choosing Outfitters Kauai again.

A kayak trip up the Wailua River, then a hike and lunch to the waterfall.
Feb 2020
A most exhilarating and enjoyable day out. The swim at the end in the pool and being jet-washed by the waterfall was something that simply must be done. Our guide Elvis was a real treat - entertaining, informative (about Kauai, the plantlife and history of the islands), and he had his eye on safety throughout, ensuring all were safe and had a thrilling day out. En route we encountered the wild animals of the rainforest - the chickens, chicks, ducks and ducklings. Er, ok, not very wild but that's Hawaii for you. Nice one Elvis - 5 out of 5 mate. Thankyouverymuch.

As exciting or Chill as you want to make it!
Sep 2019
We were in a pretty small group and my husband and I wanted to do everything - try every food sample from the forest, swing off every rope swing, swim in every swimming hole etc, but the other couple was more reserved so they passed on mostly everything. This trip was great because we could do it all and they could just relax and we all still had a great time. Shout out to Wade, our great guide!

Awesome trip! Our guide Kevin was amazing!
Aug 2019
My husband,16 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Kevin was great—super laid back, knowledgeable, and the best part was he pulled out a ukelele and played at different times throughout the trip! He took us to a little local bakery at the beginning where we got some great pastries, and he also gave us a lot of recommendations for places to go and to eat that only locals know about. The SUP, hike and zip into the water hole were awesome! Highly recommend this outing.
