Overview

Beijing is the vibrant, history-filled capital of China, renowned for its diverse and delectable food. But you’ll have to get far off the tourist track to do it justice. Discover local, family-run establishments and authentic eateries during this insider’s dinner crawl through Old Beijing. You’ll take a guided stroll through one of the last surviving hutongs to taste the flavors that have fueled the city for millennia.

What to Expect

The cuisine of northeast China is an eclectic, savory mix of imperial food traditions and the humbler fare of local migrant populations. Beijing is the best place to sample regional specialties, but most visitors get stuck on the same tourist track.

During this insider’s food crawl through Lao Beijing, or Old Beijing, you’ll discover under-the-radar eateries and family-run restaurants. Sample traditional dishes alongside locals as you tuck into 15 different treats from three different food stops, along with local stalls. Tours are limited to 8 people for a personalized experience.

As you travel through the back alleys of one of Beijing’s last surviving hutongs, or traditional residences, you’ll learn about the diverse flavors that have fueled the city for millennia. Prepare to be treated to an edible history lesson as you embark on a fact-filled taste tour. Learn about the invasions of Genghis Khan as you tuck into a Mongolian hotpot, and explore the city’s displaced Muslim population through a taste of their grilled kebabs. Top off the evening with a Beijinger favorite—a family-run chicken restaurant—and a taste of the city’s one-of-a-kind jarred yogurt.

Better than expected

Gavin was friendly knowledgeable and accomodating and a great communicator especially given the crazy rainstorm. The food was delicious. We had heard it was a great tour but still we were surprised at how much we enjoyed it.

We did the Old Beijing Dinner Tour with Katie and it turned out to be excellent! The food was local and delicious and Katie was as knowledgeable about the food as about the area. We had lost our phone the previous night, and Katie graciously...More
