I had a great time experiencing the Hawker Centers with Gerry. He shared local stories and delicious street cuisine, along with some cold refreshing beers. We laughed and solved the world problems one table at a time.
In the end it felt good to support the hawker centers who really work hard to support their families and lives. .

The Hawker center tour was fantastic! First, there was so much food. You definitely need to arrive hungry. Second, Gerry did a wonderful job of giving insight into daily life in Singapore. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the city

As with other reviewers, I've nothing but praise for this tour. From picking us up at our hotel to dropping us back there later in the evening we had a fabulous evening of food, drink and discovery. This is the perfect tour for anyone who wants to find out about the real Singapore - the one that most tourists will miss. Gerry and his wife Jo and guided us expertly around the city, ordering food and drinks, answering our many questions and even shepherding us onto the MRT - which gave us the confidence to do it again the next day. As for the food - well all I can say is, be hungry. Gerry knows the best places and the best dishes where the locals eat. Gerry is full of interesting facts which give a colourful insight into daily life in the city. Ask him what you want to know and he will tell you. Cannot recommend this tour enough.

Gerry was a great organizer and certainly took us to see places were would not have gone without his guidance. The group was small (8 people) and we enjoyed the different types of transport to get around the city. The tour started really strongly in the China quarter. The tasting and history was covered well & was well aligned to our expectations based off similar tours in Europe, however things then started to get a little less detailed as we moved onto the India section - where the food was still great but not much history and then the Arab quarter had a very brief history element and no food tastings. Given the cost of the tour I did feel there is room for improvement - especially as we have done a number of great food tours in Europe that were half the price and covered a lot more about the history of certain dishes or key events in the making of a city. Gerry does seem really passionate about the tour and helping people see a different side to Singapore but it just needed a little more research I think.

We had a great time experiencing the taste and sounds of the local hawker food. In addition to the fabulous meal it was delightful to tour the surrounding neighborhood. Gerry is an excellent guide. He is quite knowledgeable, polite and humorous. He and his wife put us at eased. We would highly recommend this tour.

Fabulous tour! Gerry was the best tour operator and made this tour memorable. It had variety and the food was the best. We also got to learn a bit of history and we didn’t end up exhausted like with other tours. He picked the highlights and covered everything we needed. Absolutely amazing! If you need to pick a tour and love food, this is it.

If there's one tour to do while in Singapore, this is it. Gerry is fantastic - so knowledgeable, fun and hospitable. He created a relaxed atmosphere and it felt like a night out with friends. So much more than a food tour - we learned about Singapore's history, culture and neighbourhoods. And SO MUCH amazing food. My to tip is do not eat all day before this tour. Great value for money, and great fun. Highly recommend!

We had a really wonderful time on this tour. Gerry was lovely and very knowledgeable and there was so much delicious food (you will not be hungry). It was a really great way to experience the hawker centres, and learn more than just the “touristy” areas.

Gerry met us at our hotel and walked with us to one of the Hawker centres. He ordered lots of delicious food was very easy to get along with. He was also very informative so we felt comfortable getting around Singapore the next day.
We had a lovely time wandering around various areas in Chinatown after our appetites gave out, and Gerry provided us with histories of each area and how it fitted into the culture of Singapore.
When jetlag caught up with us, he provided transport back to our hotel.
We had a terrific evening.

We greatly enjoyed this food and walking tour conducted by tourguide Gerry and his wife Jo. They are proud Chinese Singaporeans who are deeply knowledgeable about their cuisine and culture and eager to share it with visitors.
You will get PLENTY to eat on this tour, so don't eat anything beforehand.
After being picked up from our hotel by Gerry, we went (in a small group of 4) to two different hawker centres in the Chinatown area. We consumed:
- Oyster omlet (very good, tiny oysters like the ones we used to get at my Dad’s place in Olympia, WA)
- Carrot/turnip omelet (much better than it sounds, after all it’s fried)
- 3 or 4 kinds of noodle dishes, all quite interesting
- Barbecued meat platter (duck, soy sauce chicken, char siu, roast pig)
- Ma La duck parts (good flavoring, well, the feet and head etc. a bit chewy, neck quite yummy)
- Hainan steamed chicken rice
- Dumplings of several varieties
- Chinese greens (2 or 3 kinds)
- Mangosteens (best fruit in the world) and durian (worse fruit in the universe)
- Fruit juices (mango, pineapple/guava)
- Several shaved ice desserts made with tropical fruits (mango, soursop—much better than it wounds, coconut)
- Plus other stuff I can’t remember
- Many kinds of regional Chinese beers (most of which I had ever seen before despite having traveled extensively in China--the favorite was a brand called “Snow Flower” 雪花 Xuěhuā — it’s a special brand from Qingdao brewery in China, a light pilsener (like most Chinese beers), but with a bit of body.
Gerry and Jo were quite friendly and knowledgeable, and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone!

I and my husband are super interested in the food tour. But my husband has gluten allergy. Will some dishes be GF?

He asked everyone at the start of the tour about any allergies and preferred types of food to eat. We had a lot of meat and fish so I think you should have no issues working around that. Keep in mind we had at least 12 different foods so there will be plenty to choose from!

We were picked up from our hotel at 10.00am, but you can have an afternoon or maybe an evening tour - contact them. Yes singles are fine. There were 4 in our group (2 + 2) but it easily could have been 5. The guide, Gerry, was great.

My wife has a mobility problem meaning she walks slowly with a walking stick. No real problem around a market but what is the transport from one site to the next?

When we made the tour, we got picked up by a grab-taxi that the tourguide ordered. After that we were walking around in chinatown.

The price seems a little steep considering hawker food is usually less than $10. How much food do you get exactly on this tour? What happens to leftovers?
Tagfcuk
High Wycombe, UK237 contributions
How much food? I guess as much as you can eat is the answer. Also it’s not (in our experience) a single stop at a hawker market. We went to several other places and are different things during our tour. As for the leftovers we were offered them but declined and our guide took them to give to old people in his housing area which was cool.
I found it great value for money and it was a real highlight.

I have a nut allergy including cashews and peanuts do you think I could do this tour or shall I stay away from hawker markets altogether?

My husband has a peanut allergy and we contacted Gerry and he said not a problem! We had the most amazing time - highly recommend (my husband was able to safely eat everything, with Gerrry reassuring him there were no peanuts)

Private tour. We had two people but he might do it for four. Why don’t you ask. We went to Maxwell. And People’s Park but Gerry is flexible and could go to others. Again you should contact him.

Is it possible to do this tour as a solo traveler? I understand there needs to be more than one person on the tour, but was hoping I could join another group.
