Fantastic Little India food & culture tour
We had such a wonderful morning exploring vibrant and colourful Little India and its cultural and food treasures with tour guide Shabnam. She had so much passion, insight and local knowledge. One of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. We have lived in Singapore for many years, but discovered many delicious new dishes and so much history. Highly recommended!

New experience to explore Little India
Found that there was very nice briyani stall in tekka market - Yakader Muslim Food.... really damn gooddddd 🤤🤤🤤 Explore the tekka wet market and saw the crowd in the morning ... was interesting - people come and buy their daily needs (even you can find the cheapest ingredients in the area) New mural walls to explore, spotted instagram able places, and ended to sweet shop for dessert —— which means hope the sweet memories will be remained with you forever ☺️

Great staycation experience which you must try!
I joined the private Little India Morning Staycation Tour with my friends yesterday. This 2 hours tour was really amazing and I would like to recommend to more people who just stay in Singapore as we can't go travelling abroad during this Covid19. We followed the safe distancing rules during the tour as well. Since beginning of our morning tour, our tour leader (Shabnam) was very engaging, informative and fantastic! We were so excited as this tour help us big time to understand the culture and historical stories Little India and we also had a chance to taste some great Indian delicacies during the tour which we never had before! This tour really help us as a tourist to learn more deeper about our Little India. We love it so much to experience it with Singabites in near future to some Singapore great gem areas! Thanks again Singabites for the awesome staycation experience ever!

    Amazing, Delicious Food Tour
The best thing about this food tour is the knowledge and thoughtfulness behind each food stall that was chosen. The diversity was great, didn't feel like we were eating more of less the same thing. The food delicious, from the chicken rice to the roti to the sweets. I did not want to share my plate with anyone, especially the roti, which is one of my favorite foods. Walking the tour was great because I was able to explore a part of Singapore that I don't know very well. Highly recommend doing this with friends or family!!

    Excellent family tour
Our family of 4 explored the Singapore Katong neighborhood for a morning food experience. It was an area of Singapore we would never have visited, and really enjoyed it. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and willing to talk about anything related to Singapore (not just food). We thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. The food we tasted was delicious and varied. We loved the Laksa, chicken and rice and curry puffs!

    Great Local Taste of Singapore
My buddy and I went on a morning tour with Jasmine and it was great! One of the better food tours I have been on. Jasmine shared Singaporean food and culture that we would not have gotten otherwise. The tour is very solid. The only thing I would keep in mind is the tour has a lot of small dishes with walking in between. Don’t expect any big sit down meals. This wasn’t a problem, but a bit different than some of the other food tours I have done before. All and all great tour and our guide Jasmine was awesome.

    Katong Food Tour
We found this tour on Trip Advisor and we were extremely pleased with the experience. Our guide, Khatijah, was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and our guide’s interesting commentary about Singapore and the types of food we tried. She is extremely knowledgeable and well-spoken. We also visited a beautiful Hindu temple and a typical Peranakan home.

Great private food tour covering a lot of variety
We requested a private tour in order to be able to tailor it a bit to our preferences. James arranged a great day for us which covered a lot of ground (both geographically and variety of cuisine). The back and forth planning via email was super easy and our ultimate guide sprinkled in some nice history along with great bites. The tour included both walking and taxis which was great to see neighborhoods we would not have otherwise seen (and gave us a breather between dishes). We especially liked the range of flavors and dishes which included beef rendang, seafood laksa, curry puffs, chicken biryani, chicken lemper (crazy and good - think Asian chicken salad sandwich) and a ground lamb in flatbread. Almost forgot, we tried the famous Singaporean chicken and rice at a little spot off the beaten path which did not disappoint. The place had several homemade sauces which enhanced the chicken flavor. Highly recommend while in Singapore. Bummed we’re only here a couple days or we’d be circling back to some of the favorites!!

Great fun, with a good dose of history and culture
My wife and I had a great time with Shabnam, and learnt a great deal about the significance of Paranakan culture on the influence on our meals. It's a heroic amount of food, and I'd recommend avoiding a big breakfast beforehand. Or any breakfast beforehand. James joined us later on to check out a local microbrewery, which was a lovely way to wrap up. Thanks so much to you both.

    A dissenting opinion.
Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews on here we signed up for the Katong Evening Tour only to be disappointed on the day. This tour starts in a relatively remote part of town and we had to help our taxi driver to find it. Talk about the blind leading the blind. We thought that the SGD120 price was exorbitant because the food was very cheap and we shared one serving between two of us on several occasions. The highlight of the tour for us was an egg prata which we found much more flavourful than the legendary but bland chicken rice. Our guide was a pleasant woman and we enjoyed her company although we were uncomfortable with her insistence on taking photos of us eating at every stop and her tenancy to treat us like small children when she shepherded us across every street. Our basis of comparison is a food tour we did in Rome a number of years ago which cost about the same, was one hour longer and rated 9 out of 10 as opposed to this tour which struggled for a 5. There are better ways to spend your $120.

The tour was amazing. We are a family of 4 with children 10 & 11, the tour was engaging for all of us and our guide Shabnam made sure the children were made to feel part of the action. The tour was a great mix of history, culture and a lot of fun. Can not recommend this tour enough. The time flew by and Shabnam was an excellent host, this is her local area so her knowledge is broad ranging. 10/10

We were lucky to have Shabnam as our tour guide, she was very engaging and knowledgeable. It was a lovely 3.5hrs discovering katong, learning the little nuggets about katong heritage, peranakan culture, tasting the famous food (curry puff, bakwa, chicken rice, roti prata and nonya snacks), history of the area and streets. As a Singaporean, the food was not the highlight of the tour but the whole experience including visiting a Hindu temple and peranakan museum. I would highly recommend this tour

Thanks a lot Jay. Your review is not just important to us but also all of the food vendors that we visit along the way. By taking our food tour you supported no less than 8 local businesses that need our support at the moment. So thanks a lot. Great to hear you enjoyed the tour.

After an initial false step we met Jasmine to start our Katong food adventure. The Curry puffs, Hainanese rice chicken, Parathra curry, Katong Laska, Achar salad and soo much more.Along the way we learnt about the history, the religion and the culture of the area. The stories of the family generations involved with each dish and the development of the Peranakan culture. Overall an awesome tour. As advised others, come hungry!

We had a good time on the tour and Jasmine was a great guide. However, we won't be recommending it to friends because it is extremely over priced. I tallied up the food costs and it wouldn't have been more than $60 for the four of us (two curry puffs, two plates of chicken rice, two pratas, two tehs, two bowls of laksa and some kuehs), so it's quite unexpected that we should be charged $480 in total for the four of us. I understand that the guide could have ordered more food at each stop but honestly I can't see the food costs rising to more than $80 for the group of four.

It also does not make sense that the price is set per person for us 4 - given that the guide does the same work whether it's 3 people or 6 people. Overall, perhaps the price is set for tourists from Europe or the U.S. who aren't aware of what the food costs are in Singapore.

Hi Rachel, Many thanks for taking the time to air your opinions. All our reviews are important to us. As I explained to you when you privately emailed me, there are a lot more costs to running a food tour business than just the food. Our guide fees in Singapore are very high and in order to get the best guides we will not compromise and pay for cheaper, less knowledgeable guides. (Your first line indicates we are wise to do this) We also need to pay for operating costs such as insurance, website, training, marketing etc... Put it this way, noone starts a food tour business in Singapore to become a millionaire. I started this to help visitors find our real food and not the tourist options. Which is exactly what we are doing. Since our first tour in 2015 we have been told by many guests that they would happily have paid more but we have kept the price where it is so as many people as possible can come along and enjoy our hidden food gems. There are cheaper options in the market but having tried them I am confident that my prices are correct and that you get what you pay for. Again, many thanks for taking the time to raise your opinions.

We sent a lovely afternoon wondering around the Katong area. It was interesting to learn about the area and taste the food of the four culturals that make up Singapore. My husband enjoyed all the food but I am a little chilli sensitive and found the curry and seafood laksa too hot. I was able to have dahl instead of the curry but there was no substitute for the laksa. I would highly recommend this tour but if like me you don't like your food too hot maybe mention this at time of booking so something else can be arrange for you.
P.S The curry puff is to die for.

My wife and I had the opportunity on our honeymoon to participate in the evening food tour with Shabnam. Our group was small (four people), which was the perfect size for learning new things as we ate our way through Katong. Shabnam was an excellent guide who not only took us to some of the best food Singapore had to offer, but also shared some great personal stories that helped us to better understand the culture and upbringing for Singaporeans. This was in many ways both similar and different to how individuals are raised in our country, so it was very informative and interesting to learn from Shabnam's experience. Would highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Singapore looking to better understand the culture and food of the many cultures!

My husband and I were in Singapore in late January 2019. Based on a recommendation from a friend, we booked the evening food tour. Our friend told us not to eat lunch, which turned out to be good advice!
Our guide, Shabnam, met us at a curry puff place - along with a couple of other tour members. We then ate our way through a number of different types of food around Singapore. Indian, Chinese, etc. Shabnam grew up in Singapore, so not only did we learn a lot about the different types of foods in Singapore, we also were able to ask questions and learn about the Singaporean culture and architecture.
In addition, Shabnam took us to a Hindu temple. Being Christian, I never would have done that on my own because I think it is important to be respectful of other religions and I would have been afraid to inadvertently do something wrong. It was so nice to experience the temple with a knowledgeable person who could inform us of the customs. It was very beautiful inside!
I can't recommend this tour enough! Definitely go - but remember not to eat lunch!

If you are a “foodie” and in Singapore, SingaBites is the tour company that you want to go with.

We love doing food tours as a way to learn about a place: its culture, its customs and its history and, of course, where to find the best food. We did the Katong Evening Tour and it delivered on all counts. In fact, it was the highlight of our trip!

It took us to a neighborhood that we would not have found on our own.
We learned about the neighborhood and the Peranakan people.
We visited a local Hindu temple and watched a prayer ceremony

But the food was by far the highlight. We visited small family run businesses each with their own specialty.

Chicken and rice, Singapore’s national dish, sounds very boring but, in fact, it was amazing. We later had chicken and rice at the Chinatown Hawker complex on another tour. It was just ok; NOTHING like the chicken and rice we had with SingaBites. (Hint: it is all about the homemade condiments and how they cook the chicken and the rice!) The other food that we tried on this tour was equally delicious.

We are talking about when we can get back to Singapore (even though it’s on the other side of the world!) to eat in this neighborhood again and to do another tour with SingaBites!
