I did the 4D/3N Inca Trail hike with my friend through Alpaca Expeditions. Our tour guide was Isao and his assistant was JC. Isao was an amazing and accommodating guide with a great sense of humor. He made the trip very enjoyable and provided lots of history at the different archeological sites. JC was also great and was always willing to stay behind and assist people that needed help in any way. He’s in training to become a guide and I think that he’s going to make an amazing one.

Alpaca’s accommodations are by far the nicest of any of the tour agencies. The extra cost is truly reflected in the services and dedication to the hikers. Isao and Alpaca had a perfectly timed itinerary so that we were always one of the first groups to the campsites and archeological sites. They even switched all their plans last minute and sent us up a day early to avoid the strikes and road closures (some groups decided not to do this and were unable to begin their hikes).

Isao and JC were fantastic leaders throughout the duration of the trip. They always built in extra time into our hikes, meaning we were always early, even on the second day which required us to stop so frequently I was sure we would be late). Meanwhile, other groups were making it to the campsites after the sun had already set.

Sergio, our chef, and the sous chef/waiter/porters were all terrific as well. The food was first class with so many courses. Sergio always went the extra mile by carving animals out of fruits, making us special desserts, etc.

If you’re looking for the finishing touches, high quality guides, and overall safety, I highly recommend booking through Alpaca Expeditions. They are the most well trusted and reputable tour company for the Inca Trail. The trail can be treacherous at some points, which makes me feel this isn’t the hike to skimp on and go with another company just to save a couple bucks.

If you do book with Alpaca, please know this:
- Bring more money than is recommended on the Alpaca website for tipping. Our guide gave us much higher estaimayes than what was online (I ended up tipping 400 soles, broken up amongst the porters, chefs, guide, and assistant guide).
- You do not need to bring a face towel, trash bags, rain poncho, or sleeping bag liner (if you are renting a sleeping bag through Alpaca).
- Most of the backpack covers that are provided are not waterproof (random assortment of waterproof and not waterproof). Bring your own waterproof cover.

Alpaca Expeditions goes above and beyond to make this a once in a lifetime experience for all of the trekkers! I really did not know what to expect, but Alpaca was on top of everything and knew exactly what to do to ensure that the trip was a success. Initially, planning was easy and communication via email was always informative and responses were provided in a timely manner. The website has everything you need (follow the packing list, they know what they are talking about) and the night before your trek they meet with you to debrief and make sure you are prepared and all of your questions are answered.

As for the trek itself, the experience is priceless. Alpaca uses local Peruvian porters who are eager and excited to help make you’re trip a success. With 13 trekkers we were given, I believe, 22 porters. Each porter carries equally weighted bags filled with your tents, food, duffles, etc. They rush through the trail to get to the lunch sites and camp sites before you, have everything set up when you arrive, cheer you on as you go, clean up when you leave, and then pass you on the trail to do it all over again for the next lunch/campsite. I do not speak fluent Spanish, but the porters all did their best to communicate positivity and encouragement. You can tell that Alpaca treats them well and that they are happy to work for the green machine.

If you think you are going to lose weight during the trek YOU ARE WRONG! The food we ate during the hike was some of the best food that I have ever had in my life!!! Our chef Yuri could honestly run his own 5 star restaurant with the food he was serving us! Every meal had soup to start and nearly five different dishes/sides to choose from. The real challenge is to keep yourself from overeating so that you can continue the hike!!! You absolutely have to try a little of everything, but remember that the trek is not a walk in the park so nourish yourself but don’t eat yourself into a food coma!

Finally, and most importantly, the guides are the ones who really make the experience unique. Henry was our assistant guide and he worked to keep everyone motivated and laughing. He was ready to answer any questions and help with anything that we needed. Our main guide, Alvin, was so incredibly knowledgeable of the Peruvian Quechua culture and the history. Walking along and seeing the sights is one thing, but being with someone who can make the sights and the stories come to life is a completely other thing. He shared his culture, traditions, experiences, and knowledge every step of the way. He fully prepared us for what was to come and it really felt like he tailored the experience to the people of the group. He challenged us all to have a positive mental attitude (PMA!) and was the reason our group was as enjoyable as it was. It takes a strong leader to unite 13 strangers in a family.

I know this was a long review, but I really feel like I absolutely have to give a shout out to every single person who made this trip such an amazing experience for me: the Alpaca administration, the green machine porters, the amazing chef Yuri, and the spectacular guides Alvin and Henry! I will forever recommend Alpaca to anyone visiting Peru and look forward to doing additional treks with them!

We did the 4D/3N Inka trail with Nilton, Walter, and Max. Our head guide Nilton had such amazing knowledge of the trail. There were dozens of other groups and he was navigating the trails so much better than the other groups to hit the landmarks at the right time, with the right lighting and the right weather, despite less than ideal conditions while we were on the trail. Nilton was able to answer every question from Inca history to astronomy to botany to bird calls. Nilton was a truly phenomenal guide.

Every other aspect of the trip also exceeded our expectations. The food was fantastic. We were given amazing multi course meals using locally sourced Peruvian food. The porters perform amazing feats of strength to make the trek possible. Alpaca Expeditions was a bit more expensive than other companies but it is clear that they treat their crew better than any of the other groups. It's worth the extra cost to support a sustainable business with the best crew.

Addendum: after the trek, the train to go back to Cusco was not running due to strikes and protests. Nilton was able to get the group back safely. We had to do an extra 3-hr hike around the back of the mountain and take a very long bus ride, but he got us back and we all felt safe when he was around.

We had a phenomenal Inca trail trip, which included a day at Sacred Valley. Highly recommend the guides Alvin, Yoel, and Rosel. Most of the guides have hiked the trail hundreds of times. Alvin was wonderfully cheery and upbeat - he’s really fun to hike with. Yoel is a great leader and we enjoyed talking about his Incan ancestry. And Rosel is an expert - he has hiked Inca more than 700 times and was very knowledgeable in explaining the history behind the Incan sites. These three guides and all of the staff (chefs and porters) were extraordinarily kind to us. The porters, in particular, are INCREDIBLE and deserve all the praise.

On feedback for the tour company: I hope Alpaca takes kind care of its employees, in particular the porters. I’d say the Alpaca company could operationally make things easier and/or more efficient for its team - e.g., having tent numbers assigned in advance with name cards for duffel bags (rather than scrambling the morning of with writing these down). And would recommend creating more of a relationship between tourist and porter (e.g., assigning a porter to you, so you can get to know them /personally give thanks and provide tip).

Tips: Bring cash tips (in soles) for all the team members!

We had the #1 Team!
Russell, Walter, and Max made our journey to Machu Pichu unforgettable; their energy and optimism were contagious. The food prepared by the chef(Moses) was delicious, and the porter(sherpa) service was second to none. Due to a strike in Cusco, Alpaca had to adjust our departure time to the evening before our scheduled date. Russell handled the logistics of getting staffing, equipment, and transportation quickly; it was challenging. Still, the entire team worked hard to ensure we were safe and comfortable and would experience a fantastic adventure.

The views are worth every step!
The trail is strenuous at times; I recommend hiking poles, comfortable-lightweight trail shoes (altras), and dressing in layers. (I also recommend packing an anti-diarrhea medicine and spending three days In Cusco to acclimate to the altitude. You will be exposed to different foods and conditions that may affect you in Cusco and on the trail). Our "Super Hiker" family of 15 was of various athletic abilities and ages from the mid-20s to 68. We bonded very well and had an incredible time together, on and off the trial. Still, you could also break away easily and hike in silence if you wanted to solo hike from time to time (I will miss our time together). Walter and Russell kept a moderate pace and ensured no one would be left behind. We were very safe in their capable hands. A bonus is you get to stop from time to time to hear stories of the Inka people and learn about their history.

The journey is the destination.
This trip was one I will recommend repeatedly, and I will cherish the memories for a lifetime.

Our guide, Juan Carlos Zuloaga, provided us with so much invaluable information on the Inca’s history and culture, local floral and fauna, and animal life as well. Juan Carlos was passionate about his work and teaching us about his culture and he was fun and easy to laugh with as well. Juan Carlos went above and beyond helping us schedule a COVID test in our hotel for our departure from Peru. I would highly recommend asking for Juan Carlos to lead your tour as he will guarantee that you will have a great time and leave with a greater understanding of the Inca. Along with our guide, the team of porters led by Eugenio were amazing. They hiked with heavy loads and passed us on the trails and then had lunch or dinner waiting for us as we arrived. They also always clapped as we made our way into camp each day even though they were the ones who deserved the applause! They thought of all the little details from bowls of hot water and soap for us every morning and night to the tents/camp being setup perfectly. And last but definitely not least was the chef, Sebastian. I thought every meal was like eating in a five star restaurant. Lunches and dinners started out with the most delicious soups and what followed was more delectable feasts of some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Sebastian even surprised us with a cake on our last night and I didn’t even know you could make a cake without an oven. To say our group of five hikers was impressed is an understatement. This was a trip of lifetime and I would recommend alpaca expeditions to make your adventure perfect.

We had such a great experience for a trip of a lifetime. Our tour group was led by Jaime. He was so full of information about the history and culture as well as stopped many times to show us different plants or tell us stories. Jaime, Carlos, and Fernando (our other two guides) were so supportive of my 12 year old son and I as we really struggled with the altitude and were very slow. They were all so patient and helped us through some of the hardest points such as the steep steps coming down the mountain. Even when on Day 2 when we made it back to camp after dark they never complained or made us feel bad. Carlos was very knowledgeable about botany and never missed a chance to show us the beautiful local orchids. I highly recommend this tour company. The porters are beyond amazing and I still do not know how they can move so quickly through those trails! Camp was always set up when we arrived and they offered hot water (which was very welcome on those cold nights!) for washing and would bring hot coca tea to our tents in the morning. The food was excellent! Not only did it taste amazing but it was always served with the best presentation as though we were in a fancy restaurant. They stopped at several Inca sites along the trail and offered two optional sites to visit on Day 3. I cannot say enough good things about this company and I highly recommend to anyone wishing to do this hike to Machu Picchu.

The trip was well organized and well executed. Our guide Sabi Boliv was FANTASTIC. Quite, calm and unassuming he rendered a leadership classic in dealing with a 14 member team (ages from 19-59) with varying skills and endurance. He also marshalled his resources very effectively in the time and space he was dealing with. VERY impressed! Nancy and Joel were wonderful as well. At the end of the day, it is guide and supporting porters and chefs' team that has to get things done within the limited capabilities they have... and they did a GREAT job! Many thanks!! MK Sathya

My state of physical ability being what it is 2 years after the start of the pandemic, I was a little worried about doing this hike, but the folks at Alpaca did a great job helping me know exactly what to expect coming into it. Every step along the way they were great at communicating and letting me know exactly what I would need and exactly what I was getting myself into.

Throughout the actual trek, our guide Miguel was very knowledgable and did a good job managing the faster and slower group members, answering any questions we had, telling us about the plans and what to expect for each day. The chaskis (sp?) very impressively had our tents set up for us when we got to the campsite every day, and our fantastic chef Gregorio cooked incredible meals for us every morning, afternoon, and evening, even working around dietary restrictions that some group members had.

In the end, we got to see some incredible sights, learn some really interesting facts, and feel very impressed with how much we accomplished. It was very difficult, especially that notorious climb on the second day, but there is definitely sufficient time that anyone can struggle up it. And do make sure that (if you go in March) you're prepared adequately with waterproofing, as it was quite rainy. However, this was a fantastic trip, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in archaeology, hiking, and/or adventure.

We just returned from our 4D/3N Classic Inca trail hike. I do not know where to even begin to describe our experience. Personally, this trip was a bucket list item that I had dreamed of for over 30 years. Every minute of the trip was almost surreal to me, and yes, even while climbing Dead Women’s Pass!

We had a private group tour of myself and 6 others. When you book a tour that requires you to spend 4 days and 3 nights with a guide, you obviously wonder who that person will be. For us, it was Fletcher. I cannot say enough great things about Fletcher! He was informative, patient, kind, funny and we genuinely enjoyed every minute of our time with him! He was always full of positivity and support no matter the issue. He made sure to make everyone of us feel secure and confident about our day and always made sure to check on each one of us and how we were feeling. He was just INCREDIBLE. You almost feel like family by the end of your trip!

As for the rest of the “Green Machine”, AMAZING! These porters are the true heroes behind the scenes. What they do every day is above and beyond. I was in absolute amazement when each one would pass us on the trail (sometimes running) to be sure they arrived ahead of us to make our day as perfect as possible every step of the way.

The chefs! You will honestly not believe how you are fed and what is prepared for you every morning, noon and night. The food was absolutely delicious! The presentation is better than I’ve seen in 5 star restaurants and tastes just as incredible!

I am SO glad I chose Alpaca Expeditions and even happier that we were given such an AWESOME guide! Thank you so SO much for making my dream come true (literally)! It exceeded every expectation I had and then some!
