The market was really fun and interesting. I tasted fruits that I had not heard of and enjoyed smoothies. The "What to expect" stated that you would learn how to make ceviche and select your own fresh seafood. We did not get the lesson but...More
Enjoy tasting regional meals, fruits, cheeses, liquors, drinks and sweets, all the while chatting and laughing with our enthusiastic friends in the market who are always so eager to share their favorite flavors. For seafood lovers and those who will try anything once, we will show you how to prepare a ceviche in the market itself. You get to select fresh catches of the day that pique your curiosity for your dish (for example fish, scallops, mussels, squid, octopus, abalone, or even sea urchin!) and see on the spot how this timeless Peruvian classic is “cooked.” Carefully pace your eating and always save some room in your stomach! We then continue to meander through the market, tasting a large variety of dried snacks, side dishes, fresh fruits, time-honored liquors that will surely give you a nice jolt and succulent juices you won’t easily find on just any restaurant menu.In the afternoon, we’ll take you to a part of Lima that is very much off the beaten path. Our private van, will pick you up from the market and we'll start heading to neighborhoods that feel very far away from the touristy vibes of Miraflores. First we will visit one of the largest and very unique cemeteries in the world where we'll enjoy some amazing views and learn more about cultural traditions in Peru.
The highlight of the tour is the visit to Lima’s Pueblos Jovenes or human settlements. They are the Peruvian favela, where colorful houses of rustic materials are built on the hillsides. These neighborhoods are the poorest areas of the city but at the same time they are rich in diversity and have some of the most hardworking and friendliest people you will ever meet. We focus on optimism and the hope and efforts for a better life for their children while we learn more about their daily lives and about positive initiatives that are changing lives.
A local guide will show us around her neighborhood located on the slopes of the sandy hills of Lima’s outskirts and will show you some of the innovative social and environmental projects that have been set up by a local NGO. The aim of this experience is a genuine intercultural experience since we will visit and interact with several locals. We will learn more about daily life in this harsh environment but will also get the chance to be introduced to some of the efforts carried out to improve the situation.
Your guide will drop you back off at your hotel at around 5:30pm (exact time depends on traffic conditions).
