What to expect
  • Meet a driver at a central location in Sofia, then enjoy views of the Bulgarian countryside on the 2-hour trip to Koprivshtitsa, which passes through the southern foothills of the Balkan mountains, and has great views of the high peaks. Upon arrival in Koprivshtitsa, stretch your legs on a walking tour of the city. As you walk, you’ll see bright Revival-period houses along cobblestone streets, and pass a series of historic monuments. Head to the central square to see an enormous mausoleum built for those killed in the 1876 April Uprising, a Bulgarian rebellion against Ottoman rule. Continue to see the historic homes of some famous Koprivshtitsa residents, from a wealthy merchant to the poet Dimcho Debalyanov, the Karavelov family, and revolutionary leaders Todor Kableshkov and Georgi Benkovski. Along the way, you’ll also see the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church, and duck into a local venue to sample stomna kebap, a beloved local meat dish. Following the walking tour of Koprivshtitsa, begin the return trip to Sofia, where this tour concludes at the original departure point.

Enchanting places...and Martin, the guide, made the experience special!
Oct 2021 • Solo
The tour to Rila Monastry and Boyana Church is very well organised, the price is fair and Martin is the best guide you can imagine: kind, professional, lively and also good looking 🌸 I had a great time 😊

Excellent day out and excellent guide / driver
Aug 2021
An excellent trip. Our driver and guide, I think his name was Mette, was excellent. I am actually writing this review because I was so impressed with him - excellent personality and thorough with his knowledge of Bulgarian history and so passionate about his country. All of us enjoyed this trip and I would highly recommend it

A Must Do in Bulgaria
Aug 2021
A must do for travellers to Bulgaria! The bus trip to Rila itself offered an interesting view of Bulgarian country side ,and our tour guide Lubo, offered all sorts of interesting and quirky tit-bits about Bulgaria during our trip. The Monastery itself was amazing and most certainly any photographs that we had seen, did not do justice to this magnificent complex. A visually impressive, and emotionally satisfying experience of what mankind can sometimes achieve!
The one down side...the restaurant on the topside of the village area, was crap. It is not hard to present just basic, presentable fare...even to "a captive audience". Give this restaurant a big miss.
Special mention to our tour guide "Lubo" - brilliant! One more point - it only cost an additional 5euros to have the guided tour vs just the transfer. The best 5 euros you'll spend.

Amazing Tour
Jul 2021 • Couples
What a wonderful surprise was the tour to Rila Monastery and Boyana Church, two extraordinary sights under the protection of UNESCO! This trip gives everyone something to smile about - from the truly masterful frescos in the Boyana Church through the breathtaking nature of Bulgaria to the splendid magnificence of Rila Monastery and delicious local food. Everything was so well-organised by our guide Lubo who was a real asset on the tour. He was knowledgeable about the sites we visited, the history of Bulgaria and interacted really well with us. I cannot recommend enough going for this trip. You will get the best value for your money!

Living History of the Real Bulgaria
Aug 2019
Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria, is a 19th Century village in almost original condition that is still lived in by ordinary villagers. It is set deep in the mountains two hours East of Sofia and is famous as the place where the Bulgarian revolution against the Ottoman Empire. It is said that the first shot of the revolution was fired from the small bridge, now known now as "First Gun Bridge".

The 383 houses in the village are each considered a museum in their own right although only 6 of them are open to the public as museums of the village history. There is also a very interesting gravestone at the end of the church grounds. Said to be the grace of the man who fired that first shot, the stone is engraved with crossed pistol and knife.

A great way to spend the morning and lubch.

Historic scenic Bulgarian village
Had a great day at Koprivhtitsa. The view on the scenic road through the mountains to the beautiful traditional Bulgarian village was stunning. It was an enjoyable and safe drive through the curved mountain road with my tour guide and driver, Martin. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the place, where to find good food, best spot to take pictures etc., and he does it with a great sense of humor, making the trip very interactive and interesting.

Three tours, all excellent
We took three day-tours with Traventuria in late December 2017: to the Rila Monastery, Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa. All were excellent. The guides were professional and helpful, the vehicles modern and driven safely, the logistics handled smoothly, and the tours paced to provide a full but not exhausting experience. The price was good, too. We’re happy we booked with them. One tip: Since the tours all leave from the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, it’s nice to find a place to stay nearby. We found an Airbnb at Levski Square, a couple of blocks away, which worked out great for us.
