- Food:
- although there are two huts on our way where we can purchase some basic food (i.e. beans soup, meatballs, tea) we advise you to come prepared with a lunch pack from Sofia, because the programme today is rather tight and for sure we won’t have much time for a proper lunch.
- Difficulty:
- the hiking route is moderately arduous, with individual brief paths featuring steep inclines. Please bring along comfortable walking boots. Sandals and flip-flops are not accepted. Rain jacket might be useful in summer as heavy showers sometimes occur in the afternoons.
- IMPORTANT FOR MAY AND JUNE DEPARTURES!
- Kindly note, that availability of the tour depends on the weather conditions and the operation of the chairlift.
- The terrain will be very wet and slippery and there will still be snow in the area. Walking in such conditions requires adequate equipment (good trekking boots, waterproof clothes and a warm layer beneath the jacket). The hike is demanding, so a good fitness level is also required. Keep in mind that some of the lakes may be covered in snow.
- The tour can be canceled with a last minute notice (100% refund will be applied) due to harsh conditions or closure of the chairlift.
- Not recommended for travellers with back problems
- Not recommended for pregnant travellers
- No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
- Important
- As with all lifts the one, used for the hike to The Seven Rila Lakes, may halt operations (due to strong winds, power cuts etc.). In this unlikely event, an alternative hike will be offered on spot by the guide. Mind that such a situation does not make you eligible for a refund for the tour.

About the operator
- mariabL852SU00A wonderful taste of BulgariaThe trip was well organised. The church at Boyana was beautiful and the Rila Monastery was also very impressive. Our guide Lubonir (as well as the other lady guide) was very knowledgeable and helpful. The drive was also very pleasant.I would recommend this trip to all tourists in Bulgaria.
- martinajukic9500Amazing ExperienceOur guide, Martin, was amazing! He knew a lot about the history of Boyana Church and Rila Monastery, he was ready to answer any questions and give any advice needed. He also gave us a really good tour of the museum (I initially thought I would skip the museum but he was such a fun guide I couldn't resist). I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone wanting to visit Rila Monastery.
- 38siobhanm00Well organised, well informed, highly recommended! My husband and I chose Traventuria for a day trip to Rila Monastery, which also included a visit to the Boyana Church. We highly recommend this company and the tour. It was very well organised, and our guide, Ani, was exceptionally entertaining and knowledgeable. There was no question she could not answer! We have seen many Eastern Orthodox churches in our travels, and often wondered about the meaning of the frescoes and iconography. Ani explained much of this during our tour. Both Rila Monastery and Boyana Church are very interesting and historically significant places, so they are well worth a visit - and I am so glad we chose Traventuria to take us there. I have no affiliation with them; I just wanted to give credit where it is due for such a terrific service. Five stars.
- peterpaul201400Interesting, but wouldn't do it again.Beautiful Monastery, but a long trip. Lots of other beautiful churches in or near Sofia without the long ride. Guide was okay, not great.
- Timothy P00A very well spent dayExcellent communication from the tour operator. Our guide was knowledgable and knew the answer all questions asked. Both stops were fascinating. The monastery is stunning. It’s location and build impress. We had 2h 50min to explore including the 25 minute introduction in the yard and chapel. Enjoyed a light lunch at the nearby restaurant. Trout was perfect. CASH ONLY. Also bought 2 very large jars of honey. (Delicious and distinctly different). TOILETS Only urinals and squat toilets. No paper is available.
- 830madelinem00Only OKWe enjoyed the town, but was nothing remarkable. We found our guide Martin difficult. Although enthusiastic and well-meaning, we found that he spent too much time on poorly executed jokes and not enough time on Plovdiv!
- kierons34000Excellent trip - beautiful townIf you're in Sofia, this is an excellent trip well worth the 2hr coach journey. Our bus was clean, the tour guide Martin was very knowledgeable and funny, he didn't rush and always had time to stop and talk about something in greater detail if people asked. The town itself is very beautiful and much more picturesque in my opinion than Sofia. Well worth the price.
- SarahsOffAgain00Good tour for those short of time in BulgariaRecommend this trip from Sofia for someone who is short of time when in Bulgaria and/or would be nervous of getting public transport. The customer service was excellent, we decided to do this tour quite late the night before and we were fitted into the group and got all the information. Our guide, Lubo, was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of general info about Bulgaria on the 2 hr bus journey there and then talked about the city when we were walking around Plovdiv. If it is wet, the streets of Plovdiv old town would be very slippery. It's an extra 4LEV to go into the roman theatre - and you must do that as the views are excellent. After the old Town, you have 1.5-2 hrs free time to get lunch or return to the old town or just wander about. This was plenty of time to eat and see the newer party of the city. I'm sure you could get a public bus to Plovdiv easily. I'm sure you could spend more time there and explore without a guide. But if you lack time or want to be in a group, I'd highly recommend this tour.
- Y6627ABfrankh00Outstanding tourA great tour to the awesome and moving Rila Monastery with great commentary and information along the way from Martin our guide also a very safe driver. It included Boyana church, beautiful Bulgarian scenery and the village with storks.
- Gecko117000Desastrous trip to a magnificent monastery! The guide was a total desaster, giving superfluous information like „what to do when you encounter a bear“ or instructions like „no chasing each other or throwing stones inside the monastery“. Instead of giving profound historical or cultural information he was telling his personal opinion about everything, which we could happily have done without. He treated the group as stupid children, we had to vote „hands up“ if we wanted to go the last 20 km by foot or by bus and other such ridiculous things, maybe meantvto be funny. The whole group was more or less embarrassed by this „schoolteacher“. Several left the group at the monastery not being able to listen to it anymore. Anyone interested to go should book with another company or book the cheaper option without guide because this guide was just spoiling the day. We would have liked another hour at the monastery to try the famous trout lunch and at Boyans church the whole group had to stand in line first to buy a ticket and then again to get into the church. A good guide should have reduced this waiting time by organizing a group ticket for instance The sights were great but not with this agency that uses such deplorable guides
- A2430AJalexanders00Very informativeNice and informative tour! Very recommendable. Tourguide Todor was amazing, very big knowledge! Thanks to him.
- Leonard98800Difficult old Town but great tour companyJust completed the Plovdiv tour. Despite my wife being told she would have difficulties with the cobbled streets she chose to go. When she had to withdraw the Transveturia team were a real help going out of their c way to get us to an area where we could explore on our own. Real professionalism.
- Dreamer59295000TMB Mis-AdventureRead between the lines! Rude people- horrible service. They’ll steal your money. Do not plan your trip with this company.
- Steve R00Great guideExcellent tour thanks to Martin our tour guide. Excellent English and happy to answer all our questions. There is a lot of travel which can't be helped. Both towns worth the visits.
- Liveandsee2300Good day trip. Lot of walking and driving Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa. Guide was good. Tour was as advertised.I booked the Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa Day Trip from Sofia a day before as I had too much time in Sofia and wanted to see more of Bulgaria. This was a really good option. The tour operator were easy to communicate with prior to the trip and answered any questions I had. All information was accurate of what was included and meeting point was easy to get to. Just check their website, easy to book online. I think but may be wrong, you can include hotel pick up and drop off but this was an extra cost. The meeting point otherwise was central and your likely to be able to walk to it anyway from your hotel. Get there a bit early as many tour operators use it as well for day tours. Find the correct bus. We departed reasonably on time, just after 08:00 and were back by 19:00 in Sofia. It is a long day and there is a lot of driving but at the same time it wasn't tiring and I saw a lot. Good overview of both places. You will walk a lot so wear good shoes. Also paving is not very even so be mindful of this, much of the grounds are cobbled. The guide was very good. You get a guided tour of the highlights and main parts in both locations and then you will have some free time to explore yourself. Entrance fees to any tourist attractions are not included in the price but this was cheap. Lunch and other personal expenses are also not included. Wear layers as the weather in Plovdiv was hot but in Koprivshtitsa which is in the mountains, the weather can change quickly. It was cold too. We had rain and sun within 5 minutes. Whilst this is a day trip, it is fine for an overview. You can't see everything. Just be mindful. Your not rushed but you need to allocate your free time properly so you can see or do what you want to. The guided tour in Plovdiv was around 2 hours and fifteen minutes. We had around 1 hour and 15 minutes to explore ourselves and get lunch. I suggest getting a snack on the go so you don't waste time as there is a lot to see in Plovdiv. Koprivshtitsa is smaller so the guided tour was just over an hour and we then had just under an hour or 45 minutes to explore ourselves. The tour is advertised to come back to Sofia between 18:30 and 19:30. We were back by 19:00. However a few of us had things on in the evening so let the guide know if you do and they will try to get you back on time. The above is plus / minus and depends on the group and road conditions. There is as I said a lot of driving. Transport was comfortable and clean with free WIFI. It was a medium size group. A full bus!

The views from the 7 lakes hike were absolutely beautiful; and the walk was nice and easy in pace so that we had time to really take in our surroundings. Going up the chair lift was a lovely way to start viewing the mountain. It was a bit chilly on the chairlift, but then when we were hiking it was really warm (we were lucky with the sunshine).
Both of our guides were nice and friendly and they gave us some really interesting info about the Rila Monastery and it's frescoes.
We also got chatting to some other English travellers, so overall a really great day!

We could not make it due to the weather but the agency did not even offer us a voucher or money back...which would have been more than appreciated.

Dear Jean Baptiste! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review!
The hiking tour on 17.09.22 took place. All participants but yourself attended the tour and enjoyed the day entirely!
Our mountain guides are real professionals, they have been trained to guide people in the mountains in different weather conditions. In this case, we keep the group smaller than usual.
Since we did not officially inform you that the tour is canceled, and you did not turn up in the morning, we can not honor any refund, this reservation is considered as a no-show.
Kind regards

Great tour, guide and driver were friendly and helpful.
Some feedback would be to advise people on this tour to bring a warm jacket or jumper as we had to buy at the hut as it was very cold and we were not prepared or advised which was disappointing as if the hut didn’t have there was no way we could have completed the tour and we were not the only ones on the tour that had to purchase.

I would like to thank both the guides / drivers and also to the administration team. They did all the best to help us in order to go / join these tours since we really wanted to go.
Going to the 7 lakes it's was a wonderful experience. An experience that we will never forget. Even though the trail might be challenging in the beginning but worth it once you reach the summit.
With regards the monastery, it was OK. It's an experience of you had never been to a monastery. Yet certain places where restricted to view them.

A faultless trip. Traventuria were fantastic. They looked after us very well and the organisation was superb. The walks were varied and in truly stunning countryside. Very demanding walking/hiking/scrambling but so worth it. Loved that we ate out in 4 different places in Bansco rather than just in hotel. They threw in a couple of surprises too. KAMEN our guide was excellent and his knowledge of Rila Monastry was a highlight. ROSEN our driver was very kind when one of our group was unwell. Bulgaria is beautiful and inexpensive.

My friend and I booked this a few days ago and it was really nice.
Really tiring because we have to walk all the day along but we don't regret it at all !
The views were impressive !
And our guide, Vasco, was really nice. We talked a lot with him, he passed on his love of nature, he was kind and enthousiastic. We learned a lot about the history of Bulgaria also.
It was our first hike and he helped us, always waited for us without showing any exasperation because we were so slow.
He was always optimistic and we had a great time with him !
If you can choose your guide, I highly recommande him !
